These are the parts.

This is what we start with.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d157/big_j_1979/shortshifter002.jpg

This is what we want to end up with when we're done working it over.

This is where all the action will take place.

This is the cable end on the actuator.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d157/big_j_1979/shortshifter007.jpg

I popped the bushing out and it was wore out and cracked. The PVC piece is some I had left over from when I made bushings for my car. The cable ends are diffrent diameters between the 02-03 and 04+ on the transmission end, the end under the console is the same.

Solid PVC stock I turned down on a lathe and the bushing after I drilled it out. The hole is 5/16 or 8mm, they're so close it doesn't matter.

Bushing installed in cable end, it's a press fit, it's not going to come out.

This is where you want placment (it's diffrent on an 04+ because the end is bigger, but the general idea is the same), if you look closely you can see where it's marked with red.

The hole drilled, it's a pain in the ass because it's on two diffrent heights, if you grind it a little first it's easier, I used a ball mill end and a dremel tool to get it started.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d157/big_j_1979/shortshifter015.jpg

Tap the hole.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d157/big_j_1979/shortshifter017.jpg

Screw in the high tech short shifter adaptor.

http://i35.photobucket.com/albums/d157/big_j_1979/shortshifter018.jpg

Install the cable end and you're done. It took less than an hour.

Heres mie from a side view.

Mine sits back because I welded an 8mm nut to the outside of the cable end under the console.

Another cheap quality mod brought to you by JPD.

Wow, that turned out well. I know its for a SE-R, but it would be interesting to see other makes and models create their own short shift linkages like this.

All shifters are just a system of levers, mine mainly consits of second class levers that transmit effort along a cable to another second class lever, for fore and aft movment. Lateral movment is transmitted, via a cable, from a first class lever to a second class lever.

Once you under stand levers, you'll know what changing the either the fuclurm or point where effot is applied will do to load and movment. Then all you have to do is figure out if there is any where in your system you can change a fulcrum or the point where effort is applied to shorten things up.

It's all about the basics.

I think im gonna do this myself this weekend. How much shorter are the gears? Do you have any pic'c before and after?

About 50%, no before and after.

Nice to see somebody actually engineering a short shifter that physically shortens the throws instead of just using a shorter lever or shift knob.

Nice how dose it drive? I have had a Few GTRs with short shifter and I hate to drive it on the street Now at the drag strip it all good.

Drives great, it's a good change from the "rowing a boat" motion it used to be.

thats cool so you still have a feel for neutral? That is the problem I have a had it that there is really no neutral and you can easly miss it. I also like the way you did this conversion. Could you be a little more detailed cause it would make a good write up.

All gears including neutral are very positive. I removed some of the rubber bushings and replaced them with solid pieces, so there is almost no slop, you know where you put it. It's not as solid as a transmission mounted shifter can be, but it's damn close.
