END EDIT

Nippon (Austin) and I are thinking of going on a mountain run on New Years day. Anyone down? We can meet at the usual spot at the usual time. 10am at the Home Depot in Dawsonville across from the outlets there. We'll be leaving promptly at 10:30am.

I'm thinking of hitting the loop of 60, 129, and 180 and maybe a bit more of 60 north of 180 depending on time.

Lunch is still in the air. Pack sandwich meat or find somewhere to stop?

Temps are looking to be high 50's in the daytime so perfect weather for a mountain run!

Here's a map of where we'll be going:

I hate to bitch, but If we are going to meet at 10, can everyone top off before they meet up. It seems like by the time everyone meets up, then fills up, checks their tire pressure and fluids, and make it to the mountain... they are ready to eat lunch. just a thought.

Jehu
12-28-2006, 12:36 PM
Cornercarver has a good point. Please try to get in the area around 9:30 and get gas and check tire pressure beforehand (I'll be topping off and setting tire pressures when I first leave my house). We will be leaving Home Depot at 10:30 regardless!

Anyone have any ideas on lunch though? I figured about 12:30 or 1 would be a good time to stop somewhere. Don't know what the choices are though.

Nippon

MUD!!!!!!!!! BRING YER RALLY TAYRS BITCHES!!!!! :bump:

ok but for real, depending on tarmarc temps we really wont be ripping it like a hot summer day, if the sun is shining we'll have decent temps to maintain good grip. But I would'nt advice running it too hard. Winter runs arent to be driven too hard, please dont forget that.

If I can get this engine swap done, I'll be there.

Nippon
12-29-2006, 10:25 AM
heck yeah. it'll be a good way to break it in. Just make sure you cover all your p's and q's with it. And bring extra oil and coolant just in case you find a leak. an I guess dont run it too hard. Unless you're confident that it'll hold up just fine.

Jehu
12-29-2006, 10:34 AM
What all do you have left to the swap?

Eric-Aristo-
12-29-2006, 10:42 AM
eh I wanna, but I gotta make sure that the motor is ok. and that just the valve cover gasket and the dip stick were the things throwing oil, so far it looks like just a REALLY bad blown valve cover gasket, and a stupid dipstick that doesn't like it's home, grrr $34 bucks for a damned SR dipstick.

cornercarver78
12-29-2006, 11:02 AM
and maybe some cam seals???

Jehu
12-29-2006, 11:02 AM
My rear valve cover is leaking too. Just make sure to check the oil level unless you get to fix it beforehand.

Well, the engine's in, I'm looking to go get a replacement radiator today. The dizzy cap should get in today. And I've only got a few wires left to run. The thing that may hold me up from doin' the run is the throttle cable and throttle cable bracket. If those get here in time, I'm good to roll.

Sol-Badguy
12-30-2006, 12:30 AM
I'll try to be there.

We'll see what happens.

EvasiveEF9

Not lookin' hot for me. My swap is turning over, and I've got fire. Now I've just gotta figure out if it's got compression and fuel... I tried ghetto-rigging a "fuel injector" last night and just about blew myself up... Doing a compression check tonight.

Jehu
12-30-2006, 09:40 AM
No blowing yourselves up to go on the run! lol Show me your dedication by getting there in one piece! ;)

Looks like the forecast is changing a bit now. Lots of rain on Sunday and maybe some Monday morning. I'm still going to be going up though. I'm driving the maxima anyway so it's not like I'd be lightening fast to start with. But I've got new tires which are really good in the wet so I'm good regardless.

So, rain or shine, I'm there.

Elbow
12-30-2006, 10:13 AM

EvasiveEF9
12-30-2006, 12:41 PM
Well, for whatever reason, the engine isn't starting. This is now the ONLY thing keeping me from going. I'm checking the timing today; I'm going to completely reset the timing, cams, crank, and dizzy, then light it. If that fails, I'm going to see if maybe the dizzy gear is on wrong. If that's good, I'm running a compression test. We'll go from there, because it leaves three options. Compression good means it's electrical or fuel. Compression bad means the engine gets torn down and the head sent off to my machine shop in acworth.

We'll see what happens! I just don't trust the talon up there or else I'd bring it.

EvasiveEF9
12-30-2006, 02:28 PM
GOOD NEWS! I was a dumbass and put the plug wires on backwards (IE the inline 4 engine had wires going in a 1-2-3-4 order instead of 4-3-2-1. Since then, i've gotten it to fire for a second, and then die. I'm assuming air in the fuel rail/injectors, or bad injectors...I know there's gas making it to the fuel rail, though...

Bring the cooper! I just got an RC Cooper. Red with checkered top. Pretty neat but doesn't turn like my boys' EVO and Sub.

Joker, You do know the firing order is not in a row, right? Typically cylinders 1 and 2 are flip flopped on the dizzy going to the spark plugs. I'm sure you probably know but still...

Nippon
12-30-2006, 03:45 PM
Hey they run touge in the rain all the time. Just slow your ass down. Besides, I'm getting conflicting reports of "spotty" rain on sunday and sun on monday.

Anyway, if you really dont have any tread to irrigate water (if there is any at all)... dont push the maybe, baby.

And damn, I'm dissapointed I wont be seeing the 787B MX5 actually doing a grip run. hah. Why dont you just plug up the coolant lines and you'll be good to go. Who needs heat when its gonna be 50/60f anyway. lol.

Joker, if you're still at this stage of the swap I wouldnt recommend coming. It was a good minute after my swap until I started running it really hard. Suppose you finish it tomorrow and run the mountain pass the next day... there's no promise that something might not go wrong.

As for my swap...I dont' wanna mention what dumb-ass thing i overlooked, but it's possble the car may be on the run. IF it is...I'll be towards the back of the pack. I don't wanna push it hard, but I would like to come out, have some fun, and meet some new people. I've run the route several times, so it's not like I'm a kid in a candy store. Looking at the weather again, it's supposed to stop raining around 9pm tonight. It will probably rain all day though with a good amount of rain too.

As I've mentioned before, I'm down rain or shine.

Nippon
12-31-2006, 10:51 AM
This home depot is RIGHT off 400. I mean, is you guys were coming up 400north, it'll be on your right hand side. You'll start to see a giant outlet shopping area and it will be on your right hand side.

Anyway, Jason has given you an address, you should be able to verify from that.

And like I mentioned before, since the roads WILL be wet? well more like damp, check your tread depth mmk? ;)

let me know if you want some help fixing man. let me know when you are heading to NP meets, or does anyone go to those anymore?
(this is Eric, the white s13 guy in roswell btw)

my car is fixed and running. I know why everything happened, mt. run from a few weeks back, and the overheating issues made the seal overheat also, and it was just old. had to tap all the exhaust side stud holes for the VC and also the center one, died all the studs to be sure. still looking for an o-ring for the dip stick so I don't have to sink money into a whole unit. I won't be running the car in the mountains TO hard anytime soon, at least until I get the visteon rad and fans in, and also the nismo thermostat. need to sell some shit to fund the radiator. never ends lol :D

oh ya and the whole raining thing, I might come out to chill if it's dry tomorrow

The roads were, I'd say 90% dry as a bone. Only subtle wet spots here and there. But you guys missed out on some good weather. Perhaps next time.

sorry I didn't make it me and 2 buds were going to, but for some reason I just didn't have a good feeling about going today, last night shane said the same shit when I asked if he was intested, maybe it spooked me?
so we tooled around the back roads in cherokee/tater and those areas, 372 140, some random roads, it was a pleasant drive.
that and it was almost 11:30 by the time we gassed up at mansell. didn't party to hard last night, just got a slow start.

Green91 - I'm doing my swap down here in Woodstock at my place of residence.

However, if I'd wanted, I could have used my buddy's garage up there about a mile off the campus.

Sorry I couldn't make it. Even if it was running this morning, my alignment is way off. I finally got to pull her out of the garage for the first time in about a month today around 3pm. I played with her a little. Still needs some tuning and touching, but she's nice. Alignment to be done in the morning. Brakes to be bled again tomorrow afternoon.

What sucks is I had the car on the streets 20minutes and Cobb County pulled me over for running a red light. He asked why I was in a hurry. I said "Sir, I just got my car out of the garage maybe 20minutes ago from alot of work, and I'm doing some tests on it. I honestly didn't feel safe to stop, so I went through it. My alignment is bad and I felt it would be unsafe." "oh, so you accelerated through the light?" "Well, yes, sir...I didn't want to be in the intersection when the other light turned green"

Yeah...got a ticket. I'm going to fight it in court. Wish me luck...

Jehu

haha yeah I need a "I survived the mountain run of 07" shirt.
We should put a sign on that corner...something funny but to give us a heads up. For the shirt, it would have to be "the first mountain run" because there will be more. Biggest problem with the usual runs is that they organize it on a Sunday. I can't do it on Sundays because of church. Saturdays are best for me (or holidays lol!).

Another funny thing was that half of the participants experienced brake fade on the same part of the road...coming down to the 129 side of the end of 180! Mine got a bit spongy and I had a fun time in one hairpin turn! Didn't come close to loosing it but I don't like pushing it that hard on the street (and with my boys with me)!

EvasiveEF9
01-02-2007, 09:50 AM
Church is the reason for organizing it on sundays. Less bicyclists in the three popular seasons...

For your spongy brakes, just use your clutch/tranny to slow yourself down more and try to use your brakes less. Also, a BIG help for me was when I drained the fluid and went with DOT4 fluid. Something else you can do (but gets really annoying to the person behind you) tap your brakes as you're approaching the turn, then brake when neccessary. It pumps them up so there's pressure when you go to brake.

Just a thought! I've been through those mountains and that triangle more times than I care to count, and I've had my mistakes just as everyone else.

I've got DOT4 synthetic in it right now except I haven't flushed the rear brakes (didn't have time). The rears aren't likely the ones boiling though. I'll probably flush them one more time.

As for mountain runs, I've been to plenty too (I frequent Deals Gap/Tail of the Dragon a few times a year). I had brand new tires and this is only my second mountain run in the Maxima (heavier than the lude and it's an auto) so I used the brakes a lot early in the day until I learned the new setup. I'd rather be safe then sorry with my boys in the car and my daily driver. But as the day went on, I was able to learn the cars limits and hardly used the brakes (like MAYBE 33% of how much I used it earlier).

I will say this about the new tires (General UHP Exclaims). They have softer side walls then the fusions I had the first run in the Maxima but they do grip well. It just made the butt of the Max wiggle a lot! lol These tires where rated #1 on tire rack but I wouldn't recommend them as anything more than daily driving and occasional mountain runs. But hopefully I'll get a good amount of wear out of them...

My apologies, I thought you were saying you were new to these runs. Well...technically you are because it's a new car, but I get what you're saying. I don't really know how to help you out from what you've got, then. I rely on the my clutch alot to slow me down. DEFINITLY better to be conservative whether you're alone or with people. Wrecks aren't worth it.

I've always underestimated General's. I run with Fuz ZR1's and I love 'em. I halfway want a softer compound, though, but I enjoy being able to get some mileage out of my tires... Speaking of getting mileage outta tires, I need to go get an alignment...BADLY

I had the fusions Z's just before these. I liked the fusions better but I think these will last a bit longer and are definately better for daily driving. Very quiet and with the softer sidewalls, a very comfortable ride.

The Fusions would make the Max pull hard on ruts in the road and other imperfections because of the stiffer sidewalls. These Generals are a lot easier to drive because they don't do this.

And I've had the Maxima for a while...just didn't take it on the runs when I had the Lude. But since the lude is gone, it's all I have left. So, not new but I've never really explored the limits in it before either. Can't wait until I can through some suspension mods on it to help with the body roll. Very disconcerting the way it handles now! Much better with these rims/tires than the original dry-rotted 215/60/15 combo I had before though...

Haha, we're talking about rough rides now?

Skunk2 Coilovers
KYB AGX struts
Polyurethane bushings throughout
205/40R-17 Fuzions

My car hurts...LoL. More than I ever wanted her to, but what's done is done. Hopefully I'll get another hatchy before too long, build the old engine that just came out of this one, and it'll be my daily toy. I wont' build it like I built this one...

It may be a rough setup but a good one for mountain runs. The fusions on my Max wasn't really bad...just worse then with the Generals. I still have a stock suspension...

Once I got comfortable with the Max, I was pretty much keeping pace with Austin (not totally but for the most part). Funny how two autos where tearing it up! lol

haha, wish I'd made it for fun. Oh well, there WILL be more. Even if I'm the one assigning them...

I love my setup, don't get me wrong. It tears hell in the mountains but when it comes to daily driving and road trips...shit sucks.

efman, I'll be up there sunday afternoon or evening, and be up there most of the time following. If you wanna meet up and do some toying around in the mountains, we can go, and I'll show you how my setup runs. Did you mean ground control or drop zone?

EF's may not own all, bout our short wheel base, light-weight bodies, and low center of gravity sure do work to our benefit...

PS-I gotta work on my camber. I looked at it today and noticed I've got serious POSITIVE camber. I guess switching to the GSR front spindles/brakes really changes the dynamics of the front end. Also, my driver's side sits a little lower than the right...that's easy to fix.

I thought about that being his mistake, but he changed the header...not the head. So I wouldn't have thought he'd have taken the plug wires off...?

Kick it... :goodjob:

No, honestly, the best I can tell you is that maybe...just MAYBE you blew a fuse or stripped some rubber off a wire or accidentally disconnected something. Check all your fuses, make sure your battery terminals have good contact, and look through your connections and wires in the engine bay...

My gauges yesterday went out and blew like 4 fuses before I could figure out what I'd done. I had left the reverse-switch wires uncovered and the live side was grounding out on the transmission case. It's usually just little shit that we overlook...
