he NTSB plans to conduct an investigation Tuesday into the cause of a plane crash Christmas night in Gwinnett County.

The pilot of a Cessna 414 radioed into the tower at Briscoe Field that he was having difficulties with the plane and needed to set it down. The plane was not heard from again, though a loud explosion was heard shortly after.

The plane came down near the intersection of Boulderbrook Circle and Highway 29. It reportedly clipped a tree on the way down, and the fuselage was broken in two. All three aboard were killed.

“At this time, we have three confirmed fatalities: one male, two female,” said Lt. Craig Stanley with Gwinnett County Fire. “We don’t know the ages at this time.”

Those who knew the victims said the family was flying up to visit relatives. They lived in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

“All we know is that they were flying down to visit their mom and their sister,” said Vincent Canova, who knows the family. “We heard there was a problem, so we’re just coming down to find them. We don’t really know what’s going on yet.”

Shortly after 11Alive spoke to Canova, another car pulled up to the scene with a woman identifying herself as the victim’s sister. She was very distraught and ran toward the crash site, where she had to be physically restrained.

The NTSB will be conducting an investigation into the crash on Tuesday morning, and have asked Gwinnett County authorities to leave everything as it is until then. They asked for photos of the foot pedals, but there is reportedly not enough cockpit left to complete that request.

Of the three victims, two suffered massive head injuries – including one decapitation. The cause of death of the third victim was not immediately known.

The plane was on final approach – an instrument approach – and the pilot was attempting to land on Runway 25 at Briscoe Field. The tower lost contact with the pilot around 8:30 p.m.
