From BostonHerald.com:

Seventeen-year-old Tyrone Smith doesn't see what the big deal is.

``It's not real, but it's fashion,'' he said yesterday at the Antonio Ansaldi store in Dorchester, seller of the hottest urban teen must-have - fake bulletproof vests.

The ``Raid Vest,'' which is priced from $40 to $109, has drawn fire from some people who say it promotes violence.

But the kids who wear them and the people who make them don't think so. Some parents are even buying the $50 faux vests for their toddlers and their dogs.

``They're nice. They're ill,'' said Jr. Ennis, a 17-year-old at South Boston High who wears his to school.

Pat Demling, co-owner of Hip Zepi USA in Downtown Crossing where the vests sell like hotcakes, said this is just the latest fad. A few years ago it was oversized white T-shirts.

``This is what they ask for,'' she said. ``It's one of those fads the kids go through.''

Rappers such as 50 Cent and Ja Rule have popularized them recently, but they've been sold in Boston for the past 10 years, she said.

Antonio Ennis, who owns the Antonio Ansaldi store on Washington Street in Dorchester and designed the vests, sells them in suede, nylon and denim. Camouflage ones are coming next week.

``They know they can't walk around with a real one, so they have a fake one,'' he said. ``It's the same as a kid wearing Army fatigues.''
