I need some help and im trying to figure something out.

Im just curious as to how much dust is on everyones sensor. Here is my theory.

Nobody shoots really anywhere near f/22, so not a whole lot if going to show up. But im willing to bet most sensors have a lot of gunk and dust on them people arent seeing.

So here is what I need from you all!


1. Grab your sharpest lens. Or a kit lens!

2. Go into a well lit area (bright), and find a white wall or anything white to take a photo of. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THE AREA IS CLEAN AND SIMPLY WHITE. NO BLEMISHES.

3. MANUALLY FOCUS THE CAMERA ONTO THE SPOT. Use an object for reference and once you focus in on the spot leave it there.

4. Place the camera into Aperture Mode (Nikon Users), not sure for Canon users.

5. Set aperture to f/22.

6. Shoot the photo!


7. Take the image into photoshop and resize it to a reasonable amount.

8. Adjust Auto Levels

9. Tell me what you see and post your image.

I know mine Is filthy you can tell on bright pictures without the f/stop being set like that.

It needs a good, professional cleaning.

And a new lense.

Well Im really crazy when it comes to crap like this. When I saw how filthy the sensor was, I knew it was something that would bug me until I got it fixed. I did a lot of google hunting, and looking on a few forums, especially the Canon forums. I seriously dislike the Nikon forums even though I am a user LOL. Out of all the places, a lot of people reccommend doing it yourself, but knowing what to do first and foremost. The Canon cameras have an option to set it to Sensor Cleaning mode. Nikons only can use a "bulb" setting if I remember correctly to expose the sensor itself. I was really hesitant on cleaning it myself, but it doesnt seem all that bad.

Im buying this tommorrow and hopefully itll be here next week. A canon guy reccommended this to me. The Eclipse fluid is the only way to go.

Seems like that is the best route to go. Even if I sent my body off to Nikon to have it cleaned, more than likely in a month itll be dirty again.

i can only imagine how much shit is on my sensor, but my photogrpahy is much more recreational than yours so im not nearly as worried about it, but that looks like a kit that i should get my hands on soon enough.

Well my cam is new and it has Auto sensor cleaning..... :taun: ....JP.

Mine is probably pretty clean considering.

Georga, I do think our cameras have a setting to lock it so you can clean it. I read it in my manual somewhere and i'm sure if my D50 has it, your D200 must have it... I'll double check in the morning tho...

you should have a mirror lockup function on your dslr.

Olympus has sensor shock feature that basically sends a small amount of shake through the sensor to knock off any dust! Still going to try it soon just to see if its any good!
