"Police sting puts brakes on I-485 racing
11 people arrested, 17 cars confiscated

Drivers who reached speeds of 165 mph on Interstate 485 were among those targeted by police this weekend in an ongoing crackdown against street racers in Mecklenburg County.

After four months of surveillance, authorities on Sunday arrested 11 people and seized 17 souped-up cars. They began investigating after receiving complaints of more than 100 people gathering Saturday nights at the Stonecrest at Piper Glen shopping center in south Charlotte.

People would meet in the parking lot and then race on the outerbelt or Rea Road, police said.

"It's easy to say that speed kills, but these folks haven't realized that," said Maj. Dale Greene, who oversees Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's special operations unit.

The sting was called "Enjoy the Show" because big crowds gathered to watch the street racers, Greene said. It's a growing problem, with several Web sites promoting the next race, he added. Spontaneous racing also has become popular, with cars slowing to 35 mph on a highway and then racing to the next exit when someone blows a car horn three times, he said.

Most racers are men in their late teens to early 30s, police said. Those arrested early Sunday live in Charlotte, Kannapolis and Monroe and are between the ages of 18 and 22, along with one 31-year-old man who police said likely organized races.

They all face several misdemeanor charges of reckless driving and prearranged speed competition. Their cars, some valued at up to $40,000, likely will be sold at a public auction, police said.

On Sunday, officers seized several Ford Mustangs, Honda Civics, Acuras and Mitsubishis. Many had new engines and transmissions, and their owners had stripped the seats, radios and air conditioners so the cars could go faster, an undercover CMPD officer who didn't want to be identified told the Observer. One Mustang had a racing engine in it, police said.

DMV officials claimed at least six of the 17 cars because they think some of the cars contained stolen parts.

Michael King, 20, who faces one charge of prearranged speed competition and two charges of reckless driving, said he's never raced. But he added that he bought his 1994 Mustang two years ago and souped it up to make the engine sound bigger.

King said he started hanging out at Stonecrest about two years ago because of the big parking lot and the number of people showing off their cars.

"I might play around and spin a tire," he said.

About four years ago, racers in Mecklenburg County would congregate at a Home Depot along Providence Road near Ballantyne until officers ran them off. Now they've chosen Stonecrest, probably because it's close to several interstates and has a large parking lot, police said. Crosland, the company that manages Stonecrest, allowed people to gather in the parking lot so police could investigate, authorities said.

In the past two months, authorities also have arrested eight people and seized eight cars as part of the sting.

More than 70 officers with CMPD, the N.C. Highway Patrol and the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles were part of the sting. At least 60 warrants are still pending, and more car seizures are expected, Greene said.

Racers still meet at other south Charlotte shopping centers, Greene said, and police will target those in upcoming months."

No, there is no new law that allows the government to seize private property. They can only seize the 6 that they think have stolen parts to investigate that. Cops will often overstep their bounds, and if you aren't knowledgeable, and can afford a good lawyer, they can get away with it.

Still, those guys were asking for it, as some people here in Atlanta do the same. You have to keep street runs small and quiet if you don't want legal trouble. If you can't do that, take it to the track.

its not the meet spot, buy where we run that has me worrie. Everybody runs down there and they having been making small steps to watch the roads. I still think a private spot is better than that one spot. I still think we should switch up spots each other week, like up north and then down south the next week

Probably wouldn't be a problem if people wouldn't do it IN TRAFFIC. There's no one to "tell on you" if there's no one around (who's not involved) to see you do it!!!

I just can't believe the people that will stop right on the interstate and hold up traffic, and the ones that fly by other cars that are driving down the highway...while they're doing 120mph.

Just be smart and safe.

It wouldnt surprise me if they did something like that here, but I wouldnt expect them to put as much effort into it. Ironically, I used to live in Charlotte, and I used to go down to that place where they got busted LOL I used to live pretty close to that spot. Its a good place to race out there, but the cops used to be thick.
Cops are really bad in Charlotte. Its a nice city, and the cops are really strict on stuff like this. Its the whole "bible belt" mentality with law and order. They like to make examples of people. They dont have as much real crime to deal with as Atlanta does, so they have more time to deal with small stuff like this.
Its pretty obvious that Gwinnet County PD doesnt really care all that much about the racing scene. They have other, real crimes to deal with. I mean, take a look at how easy it would be to bust people. The scene has gotten totally out of control, and its way too public. It would be extremely easy for GPD to bust people out there, and its pretty obvious that they choose not to. Case in point...me and a cobra got pulled over leaving BP a few weeks ago. We were both hauling ass, and he could easily have busted us with at least wreckless driving, but he was cool about it and let us go. I dont think GPD is nearly as bad as they could be.

After they let us out of the parking lot (6 hours later) they police escorted us to I20 then to I285 there had to be over 200 cop cars, firetrucks and patty wagons that night, not to mention they impounded about 60 cars and arested a couple hundred people. They didnt let anyone leave untill they cross checked your tag with a list of tag numbers and videos they had been acumulating for about a month to make sure you hadnt been racing in the parking lot. It will be soon when they crack down trust me, they start letting more and more go so to speak before they make there big bust, kinda like your car runs its best when its about to blow up....

HAHAHA thats bullshit look it up, street racing is defined as a competion in speed wheither its againts another car, to a certian point or against the clock I.E. yourself. If it is writen drag racing theres a margin to get out of however cause its is defined as a competion of speed between two or more vehicles from a stop to a certian point. I.e if they give you drag racing on a hwy run you can get out of it cause you was never stopped, however most cops write either racing, or street racing, so it covers there ass and most any stupid thing you was doing.

One day one of you are going to run ito the back of someone and someone will be killed and several lifes will be over its inevitable. One or the other will happen, or both.

Racing; O.C.G.A. § 40-6-186
A racing conviction is considered a misdemeanor, with a one year license suspension.
"Drag race" means the operation of two or more vehicles from a point side by side at accelerated speeds in a competitive attempt to outdistance each other or the operation of one or more vehicles over a common selected course from the same point to the same point for the purpose of comparing the relative speeds or power of acceleration of such vehicle or vehicles within a certain distance or time limit.

"Racing" means the use of one or more vehicles in an attempt to out gain, outdistance, or prevent another vehicle from passing, to arrive at a given destination ahead of another vehicle or vehicles, or to test the physical stamina or endurance of drivers over long-distance driving routes.
No person shall drive any vehicle on a highway in this state in any race, speed competition or contest, drag race or acceleration contest, test of physical endurance, exhibition of speed or acceleration, or for the purpose of making a speed record, and no person shall in any manner participate in any such race, competition of speed, contest of speed, or test or exhibition of speed.

As I said, it wouldnt surprise me if they did bust it. But look how long it took for them to bust it up in Atlanta. And I cant think of any huge stings out in Kennesaw, either. This type of stuff has/had been going on in those places for a long time...
My point is that, if what I hear about Gwinnet's crime issues lately is true, I wouldnt imagine racing being their top priority. I do know they are cracking down with the helicopter more now, but we'll have to see where it goes from here.

Yes but its about money also, cops would rather catch a street racer then a robber. A robber may have a little fine, or if they stole alot then they will server jail (cost the county money) or the street racer who will have to pay at least a grand outnot to mention all the bs that comes with it.

a helicopter is a vehicle that uses a rotating blade assembly to produce lift and therefore allow it to fly. You may have seen them around...they are kinda like airplanes, but without fixed wings :D
seriously though...gnut has a black helicoptor that they usually use for locating suspect vehicles and providing air support. Lately it has been out more and seems to be used more often to spot street racing. It doesnt have lights on it usually, so you have to keep an eye out...

The reason the cops even started LOOKING for the guys in Charlotte, was because of complaints. When you're out on the road BY YOURSELVES, there's no one around to complain. Serious accidents, deaths, major injuries, or "public disturbance" is what is going to make cops crack down. You're in deep shit if you get caught drag racing, no matter what....but if you're not drawing attention to yourselves, they're not gonna be out LOOKING for you. It's pretty simple.

i remember, they had black SUV's and tow trucks pull up and before anyone knew what to do cop cars were at every exit blocking it off. I will agree with the idea that the counties complain about racing... they should put more tracks to race at.

One thing i like better about a track is you actually get your times...races are more fair (no false starting and three horns shit).

I know either town im in (statesboro or conyers) its at least 30-35 mins to drive to a shitty 1/8th mile track.

I will agree with the idea that the counties complain about racing... they should put more tracks to race at.

One thing i like better about a track is you actually get your times...races are more fair (no false starting and three horns shit).

Why are 1/8 mile tracks shitty, cause your car gets shitty traction?

The 8th sucks b/c as soon as u start having fun u gotta shut down - I'd think that no matter what car I have. I WILL say that even in an import you should play w/ the 8th mile as much as possible b/c it teaches you THE HARD WAY how important ur 60ft times are - something FWD drive guys seem to 4get.
