Since their debuts more than a week ago, two new game systems earn good grades from consumers - but the underdog Nintendo Wii is the early favorite over the pricier, sexier Sony PlayStation3.
Both sold out on Day 1: Nov. 19 for the $500-$600 PS3 and Nov. 21 for the $250 Wii. But Nintendo seems to be reaping the benefits of a better supply.
Overall, Sony is estimated to have shipped between 125,000 and 175,000 PS3s to stores, says American Technology Research analyst P.J. McNealy; the target had been about 400,000. Nintendo shipped between 425,000 and 475,000, he says.
Nintendo's launch "has been probably a little better than expected and Sony's has been a little bit more disappointing," McNealy says. "If you have to rank on who won this holiday so far, Microsoft is first, Nintendo a close second and Sony a distant third, which is a rare statement."
Many gave up on getting a PS3 and opted for the Wii, according to New Media Strategies, a research firm that monitored Web activity related to the systems. And 38% who sought a PS3 and were subjected "to sleep deprivation, lost wages, missed classes, the elements and even muggings came away from the experience with a bitter taste in their mouths," the report says.
About 49% of online discussions were favorable to Wii, compared with 27% for PS3. Says the firm's Sam Huxley: "The hype machine went too far."
The Wii, says Bryan Clute, 26, of Silverdale, Wash., rates an A because the new remote-shaped wireless controller is "something I haven't been able to experience before. It really adds to gameplay" in the bowling game that is included with the system. Clute, who waited in line at a GameStop store to reserve a system, says, "It was well worth it."
David Nieves, 26, of Philadelphia gives the Wii an A-. "Nintendo has definitely gotten it right." He and friends spent most of the first day golfing, boxing, bowling and playing baseball. The games "were a blast."
Assessments were harsher for the PS3. Ray McLean, 34, of Brooklyn, N.Y., rates the PS3 an A but gives the games a B "because many of the launch titles were pushed back to later dates." He wanted to see aerial combat game Warhawk, for one, because it would take full advantage of the motion-sensitive controller. But connected to his 42-inch HDTV, "I'm surprised at how good (the games) look, given that they are first-generation games."
Brett Conlon, 26, of Fairfax, Va., gives the PS3 a B- because of the system updates needed before playing games, going online and playing multiplayer games. "I will say, however, that Resistance: Fall of Man shows a lot of potential. The Blu-ray player has amazing clarity (compared with) a regular DVD."
On its website, Entertainment Weekly gave the Wii a B+ and PS3 a B. "The Wii slightly edges out the PS3 in our head-to-head because it has a blockbuster Zelda game at launch and a very attractive price point," Geoff Keighley says. But in the long run, "the race will get even tighter."

so it seems Sony overhyped the PS3, wile nintendos nonchalant approach seems to be working out for them.
Lack of games is killing the PS3 at the moment.

you know one would think that sony with the ps3 and all of the hype would have quantity to back the demands and hype. oh well a huge mistake on their part.

The lack of game and the price is going to hurt sony a little bit, but still the ps3 sold out in a few days. I think the ps3 will take take atleast the 2nd spot when more games come out. But I really didnt see the wii selling like it has, but with the price tag of $250 almost anyody could afford it. The price of the wii is what brought a lot of gamers to the system and also the new gaming approach ninentdo has always been known for
well duh, Sony didn't release as many units...............

its funny i was just reading an article this week on the decline of consoles; it basically said that console gaming may be along the end of its reign... i could totally see this Microsoft is developing more and more integration into your PC (ie. vista) eventually there will be enough technology to run your PC as your gaming console and at that point SONY/NINTENDO will be in the software only market. the writer of this article was VP of gamefly or whatever that huge online gaming company is... normally when consoles come out PC gaming declines; well that isn't the case anymore so this will have a huge impact on the future of console gaming.
XBOX FTW!!!!
i think the problem with Sony is they are doing too little too late and banking on previous sony customers to push PS3. they didn't even advertise until few weeks before launch. thats just poor marketing.

Figured this would happen.
PS3 will be the top system in a few months anyways when the games are there.
PS2 was very similar. Give it some time, its just beginning.

True in the long run the PS3 will be on top once it gets better games out, and more systems.

ps2 never topped the xbox....live killed anything ps2 ever offered....and now theyre doing it again...with ease i might add, they have all the online gaming figured out, no gliching shit, and damn sure didnt put their shit on a recall....

Oh and Konami and I forgot what company are demading that Sony does something with their games like price drop and what not...because of fear losing money and what not in japan. Pretty crazy shit. Its a really bad timing and marketing strategy. Why would you want to compete with 360 and have more games that looks promising then one game (MSG 4) and Wii.....I just say dont fuck with them. Their the first ones to mass the video games system and have crzy shit. I think if they brought it out like next year maybe it will have sold much better.

Nintendo has always had their console systems around the same price point. They do it smart. On most all of their machines there is some sort of innovation or planning for it for the future..

Funny how there seems to only be one person in this thread that caught that part. Obviously they're both doing pretty damn well for themselves if they both sold out first day, and I have no doubt that PS3 would've still sold out if they released just as many units.
hows it hard to believe?
the ps3 is waay overpriced
Ummm, how's that??
Xbox 360 premium bundle with 20GB $400 then the HD-DVD drive for it is gonna be another $200
Full 360 package = $600
PS3 with Blu Ray outta the box, and 3x the HD capacity = $600
Sony decided to just be up front and hit you all at once, rather than having to peice it all together later haha.

they could they could
but personally i would just buy the xbox, then if it came to that i would buy the hd upgrade
less to spend upfront
PS3 just overdid it, overhyped it. And the main dissapointment with me is that its nothing really new besides the resolution and the blu-ray. 360 has the strong xbox live that is pretty much perfect now. Adn Wii has innovation and a whole new kind of gameplay. And the PS3...has blu-ray disc and a HDDVD....blu ray discs and HDDVD isnt gonna make a game any more enjoyable.

I think the cheaper one doesnt have an HDMI output like the higher end one. Not 100% sure on that though, I think there's a few other differences too.

Theres an HDMI cable comming out for the 360 aswell as a larger harddrive.
I think I will just stick with my original Nintendo and Super Nintendo. Cant be the originals!!
$600 for a game consol is absurd. However, when you consider the fact it is also a Blu Ray Player and the cheapest Blu Ray players sells for about $750, then you are getting a hell of a deal. You are basically getting a Blu Ray player for $600, and getting a game console for free.
I think I will just stick with my original Nintendo and Super Nintendo. Cant be the originals!!Get a Wii. They're supposed to be able to play old-school games. :goodjob:
Get a Wii. They're supposed to be able to play old-school games. :goodjob:
I may get one once they have been out for a while and the price drops. My fiance wants us to get one. Im just going to wait for the hype to go down.
