View Full Version : best all around car???

GermanMuscle
11-24-2006, 11:09 AM
im looking to get a new car and was wondering what the best all around car is. something for the track, for the drag strip, hwy, and still good for everyday driving. If possible i want to stay away from FWD and it should be a car i can
buy for less than $3000 in running condition.

I was thinking about a 240sx but i heard they are only good for drag racing or drifting, and i was thinking about a 300zx but they are too heavy when you drive and a pain to work on.

Im open to hatches, coupes, or sedans. also since it would be a DD it needs to be decent with gas.

+1

Or you can get a b13 sentra with a sr.

Or you could get a mirage and swap in a 4g63t.

GermanMuscle

those are all FWD and is it true that 240sx are only good for drifting and drag racing?

aaronfelipe

You can't drift with a CRX (unless you convert it to RWD) BUT you can drag race with it. There is less loss of HP from the flywheel to the ground in a FWD car. It is a very light Honda that has broken into 13's with a stock GSR(155 WHP?) motor.

Bruce Leroy
11-24-2006, 12:46 PM
oops my fault. I read that you wanted to stay FWD.

240's are great all around cars. They are cheap, and have an unlimited aftermarket.

Or you could get an e30 bmw. Its faster than the 240 out the box, plus motor swaps are easy.

GermanMuscle
11-24-2006, 12:54 PM
i was thinking about the e30 but i dont like them that much, they seem like bug pieces of shit when they are stock and i dont want to upgrade every little part right away

5.0 !!!!
you should by a crx throw in a b16 or gsr motor, throw on some wheels struts/coilovers and destroy corvettes

GermanMuscle

crx is FWD, ive had 2 fwd cars and want to try something different

well for that price range try to pick up a 5.0 or possibly the svo mustang that came with the 2.3 liter turbo, you could also try a old 280z

What about an E30 325 bimmer, might not be the best for a drag race car but for autocrossing/drifting it would be good. Plus if you ever got the cash go for an s52 swap you could make some great numbers. Ive seen some pretty good ones go for around 3Gs

Audi R10 LOL. and that's the truth. but for street cars. E30 BMW. AE86s are really fun. 1st gen MR2s are AWESOME track cars and you can even do a little drift if you want too. By the way it's not true that 240s are only good for drag and drift. My brother has an s13 and a friend of ours (owner of AutoFAB Motorsports) does track racing in BMWs and he drove my brothers car and he said he could probably rape half the BMWs at Road Atlanta.

Volvo S60R

in stock form does upper 13's in the 1/4 mile. Comfortable, 30+mpg on highway, great sounding stereo from factory. Great all around track car while still being way comfortable with the adjustable chasis settings. Will haul four.... for an ALL AROUND car, this is hard to beat.

I think that is out of his price range. If you want cheap power, go for a first gen dsm or 240sx. A Mk3 supra with a 1jz twin turbo swap isn't bad either.

those are all FWD and is it true that 240sx are only good for drifting and drag racing? If you're looking for a balanced car that's RWD, cheap, and good for multiple things, check into a 1st Gen Miata.

Rear Wheel Drive
Huge Aftermarket
Great Handling
Good Daily w/ Decent MPG
Convertible (Chicks dig convertibles)
Good for Drifting (www.roadsterdrift.com)
Good for Track & Autocross (SCCA Spec Miata)

Well, how about something that's 500HP, AWD from a dig, RWD from a roll, aerodynamics of a Ferrari Enzo, weighs 1,300lbs, and gets 45mpg for $45.72?

Geeze. You've got $3,000.00 to spend. It's not like you're spending $30,000.00.

For $3,000, you'll be lucky to get a non smoking 240 w/ a cold air intake on cut springs or much else for that matter.

Miatas look too much like girl cars to me. But if you're working with $3,000, you'll have to suck it up and work with what you've got.

civic = cheapest; everyone and their brother has owned atleast 1 honda (civic, crx, lude, etc)

240 = 3 years ago you could buy them everywhere for pennies now you got people selling turds for thousands so they can make DRIFT cars (i will be glad once this passes)

why don't you look into other cars that may be just as fun... Miata, MR2, Golf, RX7, 510, 3 series, etc.

Funny how all the big SCCA GT teams use them then huh? :goodjob:You do see one up there from time to time. I think they claimed the GT3 class last year at the Nationals, but I don't remember.

Aside from that, the KA24E is a lunky piece of mechanical crap. Even if you did have this craptastic powerplant, why would you stay N/A? After beefing the internals, playing with compression, tuning, and everything else you might (if you're lucky) see 180HP.

Elbow

True, but id rather run NA if I was going to road race then go turbo. There are some mean SOHC motors out there that are built cheap.

All in all to be NA better value would probably be to build a SR20DE.

Has anybody mentioned the E30 chassis BMW 325is?

170hp, 170ft. lbs., healthy redline, bulletproof engine, great weight distribution, lots of aftermarket support, clutch type limited slip differential, stock 0-60 and quarter mile of 7.5 and 15.5, respectively, and a hell of a lot more solid car in general than a 240sx. You can find them all day in your price range.

And despite the stigma around BMW, the old ones are NOT expensive to maintain, especially when we have a BMW-only salvage yard like Strictly German so close at hand. Just a thought!

There's always the NASA Spec E30 series too. :goodjob:

seriously though. forget all these fanboys ranting about integras and 240s and eclipses, etc. etc. if you are dead serious about an ALL AROUND car, listen to the guy telling you to get an E30 325is. or the guy who wanted to sell you his VW. I dont' own either of those, so you know i'm not just gassing them up. you said you didn't want to change every little part in the e30 right away, but you definitely wouldn't. it's 170 hp, PLUS a limited slip that's virtually bulletproof (like the motor). you'd be surprised at how it drives.

if you want to get into racing, on the track, it's great (SCCA and NASA have road racing programs for it, plus it's a GREAT autocross car w/ the right suspension upgrades). eventually, you could swap in an E30 M3 motor in there for cheap and MURDER any Civic you share a highway with. V6, 5-speed, limited slip (on is models). Stay way from anything that says 325es, 325e, or 325. those are the "eta" engines made for efficiency. they only rev up to about 5000rpm. not a good look on the track, lol. plus, they look killer on BBS basketweaves.

240Sx is a great all around car with a zillion parts available and cheap to own/maintain. You can also pick your body style/appearance, all the fundamentals are basically the same (I went S14 because I like newer interiors). Lots of options for power, LSDS, suspension, fit pretty big wheels/tires, etc etc. The E30 is a cool choice too, but it is a BMW, so some things will cost more. Miata is another nice fun RWD car with lots of available parts, the small size of wheels, tires, brakes, etc helps keep costs down. For AWD I really like the old 2.5RS, but they need a lot of stuff done to be pretty fast, and cost way more than $3k. For $3k, I say look for a lightly modded 240SX or maybe E30 (not sure exactly what they/parts cost).
