Aight I am trying to update a friends computer with XP home on it. It is a liget version of XP Home so I dont want to just install a not liget version of XP Pro onto it. The automatic updates will not work due to some werid ass problem with Active X coding not working on the windows site. The SP2 download file will not work because the OS is not up to date.

I Active X is turned on and works on other sites that use the coding just not the windows update site. I have tried just about everything that I can think of. I am repair computers for a living and this one just plain stumped me.

Has anyone ever had this type of issue or have any ideas on why this would be doing this.

FUCK XP HOME!!!

Mozilla definately won't work...you have to use a microsoft browser to get any updates.

IE6 or 7?

IE6, and the IE7 update wont work either because IE7 needs SP2 to run it says.

The computer is clean of viruses and spyware cas she is up to date on all that good stuff...

Download the sp2 pack from here
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=049c9dbe-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a&DisplayLang=en
and then you should be able to install offline

Yup tried that to...

That was the first thing I tried after the updates wouldnt work. It gives some error about the software package not being compatible...

Sounds to me like he doesn't have a legal copy of xp then....worst case...backup, restore and then install sp2 on the fresh restore

I did do a system restore using the windows tool and then tried again, but no success. I am sure that it is a good copy because it is the XP Home install from when she first got the computer.

maybe a bad install

I was just going to do a repair install of the OS, but she doesnt have the disc that came with the machine anymore.

I need to call microsoft and see what they have to say, but it is going to be kind of hard since she works during the day and the mircosoft help center place is only open til like 5...

Another issue is that she wants to try to keep the OS legal...

Rename C:\windows\SoftwareDistribution folder to something else "sdold". And try the updates again.

If that doesn't work manually download windows installer 3.1, and try it again.

Have you had this issue before and this worked ?

Cas I dont think that it has anything to do with windows installer...
