Flash media at the moment is alot more expensive than Hard drives.

Well since black friday is this friday, you will be able to get some kick ass deals on Hard drives. 80 gig SATA or IDE HD will prolly put you back $20 on black friday.

Also watch for deals in the newspaper and\or online at fry's cas they have some really bad ass deals from time to time also.

The way that I usually buy Hard drives is online at either www.newegg.com (http://www.newegg.com) or www.tigerdirct.com (http://www.tigerdirct.com)

Depending on how old your computer is you might not have SATA...

Hope this helps...

Black friday is the day after thanksgiving when they have crazy 75% off deals and shit, but the trick is the lines start stacking up at about 2am...

Ya you are going to need a USB hard drive that is external then if you want to be able to use it on alot of different computers. I havent priced USB external hard drives in a while let me go see what I can find...

I think the biggest thumb drive type thing isnt big enough for what you are wanting.

This is alot bigger than what you are wanting of 80 gig, but damn that is a pretty good damn deal...

You can also just buy a case and throw a hard drive in it, that is usually alot cheaper then buying one pre built.. as was mentioned above USB is the only "universal" connection to a computer now days.. fire wire is faster but isn't available on alot of computers. I am in a similar position now and plan to just buy a 500gigger and be done with it.

For the one in the link above, will I need to plug it into a wall? Could it be powered by a laptop?

If I am not mistaken, must USB hard drives will have to be plugged into the wall for them to work because USB will not allow that much power to be put through it.

~20 bucks.. depending on the case material.. plastic is cheap where as aluminum or titanium with a built in fan and what not are obviously substancially more.

Some do some don't.. flash drives on the other hand don't require power ever.. here is one 8gb and way more expensive:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820233037

That one even though more expensive per gig would prolly meet his needs better than one hooked up to the wall...

Flash media in the 80Gig range will be cost prohibitive. From what I can gather, you are looking for storage that does not require an external power source. You can by an enclosure that will run off of two open usb ports. I have such a solution and this is how I did it. 3.5in (or standard) hard drives require too much power to be run solely off of the usb ports, so you are limited to using 2.5in (laptop) hard drives. They run at less power and the enlosures that they use come with split y usb cables to gather enough power. Below are the two products that you will need to purchase to get a 80Gig storage device that does not require external power. I travel quite frequently and use similiar componants to have a relatively small 40Gig storage device. Duke's link is a much better buy for the storage space, but will require an external power source, where as these will run on two free usb ports. Let me know if you have any other questions.

The first one is a case, the second link is an example of the type of hard drive that needs to fit in that style case. 2.5 is a laptop HD so they are considerably smaller.

hard drives these days i dirt cheap, depending on how much trouble ur willing to go through, u can get a 200gb external hard drive for between $40 and $140.....flash drives these days don't come in sizes bigger than 8gb, and ones that big WILL set u back about $100.

I opted to go the most convenient way and decided that I needed an external hard drive that could be powered by itself because I assume I will be around laptops alot and one that used A/C power would not be too helpful.
I picked this up today:
