I've been at Grady for the past 7 hours waiting to hear the extent of Matt's injuries. He's pretty banged up but has been coherant and hopefully nothing he can't recover from soon! Upon x-rays and scanning his head injuries seem to be superficial and is just requiring staples. He has a broken rib, a broken finger, and possibly a hairline fracture in his back. At this time he's going into a 4-5+ hour surgery on both legs for installation of rods & pins in each.

On the lighter side...since Matt is in the process of moving in with me he'll be happy to know I am now accepting applications for hot nurses just for him!! :D

You can all leave him a get well comment on his myspace page!!

Someone needs to donate him a PS3!yeah...i...uh...second that!!! What better way to recover than play video games in HD with his new roommate :D

On a serious note, I'm not planning any more updates until 8 or 9am. His parents are staying at the hospital through the night and hopefully I won't be hearing from them until then. It is a pretty serious surgery to begin with but with all the x-rays and scans to make sure there was no serious head trauma the swelling of his legs had progressively got worse.

Just got his room info:

He is going to be in room #45 in 6B.

His direct phone number is going to be 404-616-9094.

Phones get turned off automatically after 10 p.m. and come back on at 7 a.m.

Matt's surgery went fine, nice new custom shiny titanium hardware has been installed BUT he's been put in ICU for some breathing problems and lack of electrolytes. More updates to come.

Just left the hospital and talked to Matt a couple hours ago, he's hanging in there but is really wanting to yank the neck brace off...since it was too late to read the catscans to double check the extent of his neck injuries it's going to be another day before knowing if it can come off or not. Now I know why patients are called patients.

He's in rough shape and it's hard to see anyone in that position but Matt's tough and will barrel through this obstacle with monster truck force.

He was taking pictures at Drift Fury. He had his back turned and a car was drifting then suddenly gained traction and the car hit him....... hard. It was bad, as soon as I saw it I thought for sure he was dead, but he's one tough mofo and I have faith that he is going to get through this.

Just talked to Matt's mom earlier and his next brace has been taken off so no serious injury to the upper part of his spine. They're looking over the c-scans a section at a time and now reviewing the mid section and lower part of his back. He's still in ICU and on a respirator but the IV's have been removed. Things seem to be progressing and he should be in a regular room tonight or tomorrow.

For those that don't know Matt was involved in a serious accident while photographing a race event over the weekend. He has been coherant since the incident and talking as much as possible with a tube down his throat. Both his legs were broken and had a 5 hour surgery saturday night to put rods and pins in. He has a broken rib and a few major cuts on his head and requiring staples and stiches. The surgery went fine but had a few breathing complications and issues with lungs and kidneys putting him into ICU. He was fighting the neck brace last night so it's great that is off and so far he's barreling through it the best he can.

Once he gets into a room then people can visit, send cards, etc. As of right now they can't recieve anything because they have no place to put it....a fruit basket they had been given disapeared from the waiting room while his parents were visiting Matt this morning. Remember, it's Grady hospital.

I couldnt agree more, even in court the lady who hit me never apologized or asked if I was ok.. I know this sort of accident is probably mentaly hard on both parties, so its very cool he is going to handle this in person.

So what does that mean? "Compressed Spine"? Sorry, But I have never heard that before so Im trying to understand what it all means,.

So what does that mean? "Compressed Spine"? Sorry, But I have never heard that before so Im trying to understand what it all means,.

The bones, or vertebrae, that make up your spine are very strong, but sometimes a vertebra can fracture just like any other bone in your body. Vertebra fractures are usually due to conditions such as: osteoporosis (a condition which weakens the bones), a very hard fall, excessive pressure, or some kind of physical injury.

When a bone in the spine collapses, it is called a vertebral compression fracture. These fractures happen most commonly in the thoracic spine (the middle portion of the spine), particularly in the lower vertebrae of the thoracic spine.

Every few hours I seem to have less and less respect for Grady and their staff. Great trauma center but anything outside the ER is borderline useless. Matt's parents have not seen him since last night. They do no know if he even had the back surgery or not. The surgical team supposed to meet with them at 7:30am this morning, haven't heard a thing. The Doctor's were supposed to meet with them, nobody. They are not allowed to go back. The head nurse claims she does not know but is trying to find out...they don't have a clue what has gone on since last night or how he is. Just sitting there trying to get any information they can from anyone willing to give any.

Thinking this thread should be stickied.

I tried to calling the waiting area to give his parents a little moral support and they weren't there. That could be good in the fact that they may be back with Matt now.

Let's keep our fingers crossed that they finally got to go back to see him.

Finally got some more news! No surgery last night but it is still being considered. He's coherant and coming into terms with the whole ordeal...realizing and talking about how serious the incident was. He is still wiggling his toes and actually moving his feet like he's pushing a gas pedal...just can't pull them back towards him yet. Main concern right now is he's not really feeling any pain and he's only had 2 morphine shots since the beginning. Overall things seem to be improving but still don't know the severity of his compressed lower back or what is going to be done to fix it.

Hamby & I visited with Matt tonight and ya'll he is doing AWESOME! which is great news. Very talkative. Still no official news on the middle of his back but we should hopefully know more tomorrow. Hamby and Matt's dad went back first and then Matt's mom and I second. He is cutting up and making jokes, smiling and laughing. One of the 1st things Matt asked me when i got up to him was "Anything posted on IA?" I said "eh a few things" and laughed, then said "can you say tons of threads from all your friends and then some wanting to make sure you are ok:)." I told him Jason is keeping everyone updated and you have tons of posts on your myspace! He said really and laughed and said that is very cool. I said Matt you have a ton of people wanting to see you, so we need you to stay strong so you can come hang out with everyone. He does have a lot of questions some i couldn't answer. And I apologize we(hamby &I) haven't had the opportunity to meet most of you so I wasn't able to tell him who did what etc.

On visiting and getting with the family....Here's where they can use help. Over the next couple days they will still want to leave visits to a minimum. They have asked for a few more days. At that point Jason or I will make an annoucement. They are sooo grateful of all the support that he is receiving from everyone and can't believe all the great friends that have stepped up to help. With that they are still very exhausted and inundated with phone calls. They know folks want to get in and see him but have asked for some time to get him a little more comfortable. The important thing is that he does not get bombarded and overwhelmed with a ton of people at once and then it tappers off when he needs us the most, getting OUT of the hospital and back walking and hanging out with us again. He still has a tough road ahead of him and tons of therapy

So look for 2 announcements from Jason or Me.

1. He is in a room(what the room number is etc) can recieve Cards, Flowers, balloons, what you want to send him.

2. when the family opens up visitation.

Ya'll are awesome for being so supportive of Matt!

Thank you

The Spinal surgon has not yet been in to see him, so therefor he is not out of the woods and cleared for visitors yet. Friday they will have an update on visitation. Due to some irregularitys in blood pressure, the Doctors have now stepped in and made it VERY CLEAR that he should be not bombared with visitors when it is open and should be spread out so as not to cause anymore stress on him. The Family has asked me to put a scheduale together once visitation has been opened so we can coordinate visits, so each of us can have more quality time with Matt.. I can say for myself I am very anxious to get to see him as I have not had the chance yet. I will have more information on Friday and will post an update.. his parents have asked me to thank everyone again and wish you all a happy and healthy thanksgiving.

Good news!! Just got a call from Janice and Matt’s spine has been CLEARED!!! He still has some problems with his eyes, but the doctors are very happy with how he has progressed. He has now been moved into a room and is available for visits. His doctors have asked that he only have 2-3 people AT MOST at a time and keep visits 30-40 minutes at a time. We definatly want to respect the doctors’ authority and Matt’s health and do what they have asked, as the doctors have said they will cut off ALL visitation if people do not follow the guidelines they have put forth. As I mentioned before I will go ahead and make a schedule for visits for the next 4 days. Please PM me with the times you would like to visit and I will update the list as the PM’s come in.
If you'd like to send flowers or card he is in 6B room 50 at Grady memorial hospital. The phone number there is 404-616-8409.

Well as of today Matt continues to do awesome!! He was on his feet standing for a bit over 3 minutes and has been doing legs extensions now. The doctors have given him a brace and have said they want an xray with the brace to make sure that the spine hasnt shifted. He is waiting on a c-tscan on his Right eye as he is still having some double vision, unfourtunatly Grady hasnt been as speedy as everyone would like and its getting a bit frustrating. I got to spend some time with him this evening and he is joking and laughing as usual, I have to admit its great to see him in such good spirits. Lets continue the visits and calls and continue to show him support..

Matt got to try out his new hardware today....stood up several times breaking his previous record and took about 20 steps or so! Spirits are high and he is motivated to get the hell out of that place  Food sucks, service sucks....and oh speaking of service, the bone doctor...lolol...yeah, that's exactly how she titled herself. "hey matt, i'm your bone doctor" you're the wha...? the who...? The "bone" doctor?! and she's the only relatively decent looking person in Grady that we've seen in a week...hahaha..."wait, what's your title again?" :D I wish i had a video camera

i saw him yesterday, took him some food with Kodi, an hes doing VERY well. he was joking around, sounded like his old self. I left when they had him walk, and he is recovering FAST.

he may be discharged any day now!

Brett

So are they expecting him to make a full recovery?

Is his employer holding his job for him atleast?

Nemesis

I dont know if anyone ever really FULLY recovers from injury's like he sustained. If he is alright now, 5-10 years later he's going to start feeling things Im sure that he probably wouldnt have before the accident.

The Ren
11-28-2006, 12:45 PM
^ very true.. spinal and rib injuries never really FULLY heal.. any bone injury... once broken will never be as strong as it was before.. I still have problems all the time from my accident which is close to 3 years ago now..

Is his employer holding his job for him atleast?Hopefully just a few scars and something to put on his resume & tell his grandkids

Work has been great through it all....our supervisors and one senior designer donated 2 1/2 weeks of lead time probably equalling at least 4 weeks of our pay :)

oh yeah, he's in the car now on the way home...

Wow how the fuck did I miss this?

Good to read that he seems to be making a good strong recovery.. That's insane that that happened. My thoughts are with him, and I hope he continues plowing on through recovery! Some of you who are going to visit him send him my love from SAV!
