I was pretty much in your same situation a few months ago, I bought a Nikon D50 used off of the forums and it has been great. I think you could probably get away with spending around 6-700 on a D50 and lense, I havn't really looked at the prices lately but it has been a great camera. I had no experience at all when I bought it, and although the pictures aren't professional quality or anything I still love it and enjoy using this camera.

D50 is good but I would look at a Minolta 5d or 7d or even better the Sony A100
which is basicly a 7D only muuch better. Why an A100? 10mp, same sensor as the Nikon D80. Built in anti shake no exspensive "IS" lenses to buy. roughly 16 million lenses avalible from minolta and Sony. The new Carl Ziess & sony lenses!
Good build quality. Its a good camera and a great starter camera.
camera body & 18-70mm lens $800 to 900

Now would I buy an A100 If I already owned say a Nikon d70 or betterwith lenses, probably not but as a first time slr/dslr buyer you bet I would

Some are! For general photography though you can get a minolta made 70-210 @ a constant F4 for like $70 look on ebay for minolta "beercan" lens it's a great lens

I havn't used any of the pentax cameras but have heard good things about them.

LOL @ the people on this site. He said not hardcore and not everything has to be SLR based. For general photos that are great quality then look at Nikon 8700/8800. Both George (Nemesis) and I owned one and started out with them. Another good one is the Canon S2IS or S3IS. Both will give great results with out having to buy additonal lenses.
