View Full Version : If you won the lottery...
Do you really think you'd be any happier than you are now? I know the shallow answer would be "hell yeah!" But think about it, unless material things bring you real joy how much better does it make your life?
There was a study done that found lottery winners are no happier a year later than before they won the money and some would rather give the winnings back. Personally I think it takes the fun out of life, I think even the Ferrari and two Porsches I would buy wouldn't be fun because I didnt work for it. I tell my girlfriend I'd just give her the ticket and let her deal with it rather than go through the trouble myself. Just curious what others think..

good stuff yeah i dont think id be happier overall i mean id be happy with the cars i would have:D
but i saw this thing to and a bunch of winners they just get bugged by random peeps who try to barrow money from them.
it would give you so many stupid people trying to be your friends which would suck ass.
so i dont think it would make me happier:no:
More money = more problems. But they are a different set of problems. I would much rather worry about my CPA overcharging me, and my brother mooching off of me, than to worry about how I am going to pay the mortgage....

good point:goodjob:
I would try my best not to tell anyone. That's the best policy. But if I could keep it a secret I think I would be happier because I would have some more spending money. I have seen a TV show that showed all the lottery winners whose lifes were worse than before and how it ruined them.
You couldn't keep it a secret. You would share with a few close people, and others would see "mom's new Bentley"... You just have to be unreachable. Hire an assistant, get a private #, get a big gate at the end of your 1/2 mile driveway, and love your life. It's the same thing for a lot of people in the entertainment field. You just have to be untouchable to most...
No it can be kept a secret. I know.... The people spend carefully.
BTW Hemi every time I see your sig I laugh.

Move to a small island with curvey roads, and leave everyone else behind. Come back 2 years later and tell everyone you are broke .... hehe
If it weren't for financial problems or shall I say restraints, I would have no issues at all........Life would be trouble free, so my answer is much happier.

I know I would be happier. right now, not so happy. payday happier. it just makes sense.
and after winning and collecting I would leave. that's right gone and everyone would know I won the Lotto because I wouldn't say shit except to family and close friend, "I'm going away for a year or so. brb ttyl." and b4 they could say, "DID YOU WIN THE LOTTO!!!???" I'd hang up and baord my plane
I'd buy expensive shit and just tell people I was a drug dealer.
But let's be real for a minute... All of the sudden you have 100 million bucks in the bank. You drive your new Bugatti to Compound, and EVERYONE IN THE PLACE IS SWEATING YOU. you got personal security so the suckers stand back, you got your boys sending you "select associates" that just want to say that they met you. You take 5 or 6 "new friends" back to your 25000 sq ft crib to play in the hot tub. In the morning you have a driver take them all home. Jump on a plane and head to Vegas for a few days. Get the Hef suite at the Palms. Find 5 or 6 more "friends" for the weekend and go nuts.... Fly back home, jump in the Modena to run to the BP for a Red Bull... and so on and so on...
Every man would want to be you, and every woman would want to be with you...
yeah, I think there are worse things than winning the lottery... but that's just me...

in the words of Ruiner: "money can't buy happiness but it sure can rent the fuck out of it" ... of course there are many things $ can't buy... but com'on. Mo Money Mo Problems, but still i don't know anyone that would just give it back.
Really... i would be 110% happier w/ it... think of all of the things that are now possible that wouldn't normally be. People who complain about winning the lotto have no life obviously b/c i would be having a blast...
example: if i won the lotto after i got my toy purchases and traveling out of the way i would begin my journey of pointless $ blowing and retarded shit... w/ all of the money i don't need to work so my new goal would be how many places i could get fired from in 1 week http://forums.importatlanta.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Money doesn't buy everything, but it does buy 99% of it
I would catch hell from my family because I really do not believe in just handing things to people. I'd set my mom and dad up but I know my relationship with my siblings would be ruined because they would expect certain things. I think the one thing the lotto would allow me to do is travel like I want to without a worry but personally I find the journey toward success to be more rewarding than success itself.. obviously winning the lottery removes that journey.

Yep i was going to say the same thing as Admin...money cant make you happy but it can sure rent the fuck out of it. So yes i would behappier. If i won/walked away with 20mill...the first place i would go is to teh bank to open TWO acoounts. One to put about 10 mill in for safe keeping....and even with a interest of like 2 or 3% thats enough to live off each month. i would hook my brother and my parents up then go crazy, then onc ei get settled down start living off the interest in teh bank...so i would at least be smart with 50% of it!!!!
Also that show everyone saw didnt it say that 90% of all lottery winners File for Bankruptcy within the first 2 years or something like that?

Unlike everyone's post I have read so far, I wouldn't blow my money. I would put most of it into a savings account and buy cds (done it with the money I have collected so far from a lawsuit). I would invest in things like bonds, land, and stock. So that when I am ready to retire I wouldn't have to worry about anything. It would really be handy also if I had kids. I could put them through school and give them enough so that they could afford to live on their own when they were ready
But doesn't having it handed to you take the fun out of life? Unless you got an imagination like Paul (which I dont).. I understand that people find joy in different things but part of what makes a society based on capitalism so great is that you can come from nothing and build a fortune though hard work. I go to a local gas station and I see people who put more thought into choosing lottery numbers than they probably put into maintaining their own finances.

I think I would be happier cuz I would finally have the cars I want and do what I want to them. But to keep things interesting I would do all the work to my own cars instead of paying someone else to do it. That way I would respect it alot more. I wouldn't care if people asked me for money, I can easily ignore people lol

I probably wouldn't be much happier. It wouldn't be too obvious that I had won since I don't want any extravagant cars or anything. My dream car is a Volkswagen R32, which to the untrained eye looks just like a normal Golf/GTI. I would probably still be driving my precious Jetta too. Haha, it might look a tad bit more agressive and would be pretty quick though. Although it would be more convenient to pay for things like house payments, insurance, food and such, I don't think it can buy you happiness. I have to agree with Tony on this one - everything I have, I've always worked hard for. If everything I want that costs money was just handed to me for free, I wouldn't give a shit about it.

in the event that i played the lotto first off...then actually won? i'm unsure that's i'd be happier, but the things that we need for big city survival would be taken care of, leaving mt with more time for special interest pursuits. after taking care of me, a portion of the money would be set aside for "generational purposes", seeing as how not many of us have money set aside for the next generation. i'd send a couple kids to school(college) with a clause set to where so long as they ATTEMPT to reach back, they will recieve a full ride.
a concentrated effort to make the cash generate more through business ownership/investments will be done as well.
and my lifelong dream of at least 100, but no more than 500 acres for an experiment in cooperative habitation, where people like myself can build homes and live on the land, growing and living on as much as we can independently, in addition to our kids, to grow and develop.

Here's how I always saw myself if I were to get rich. Lottery included. I'm not a material person. Never have been. I've cared about a big ass house. I'd take a normal sized house with the basic 3 BR a couple of bathrooms and all. I'd buy an older Porsche and a newer car and be done. I know for a fact I would be happier, not just because of materialistic things like having the chance to build a ground up street version of an old JGTC twin turbo NSX but have the chance to help people in a greater way. I've come up with a few designs for low-cost "modular" housing that could be assembled in hurricane or tsunami area's either for permanant safety from a storm or temporarily for relief afterwards. I've seen just about everything there is to see in the US and we take what we have for granted, it's time to branch out with a certain amount of time dedicated to helping build or rebuild communities elsewhere. Can you imagine what it would be like to cook a huge meal for an entire community in south america or wherever, maybe a place that suffered a drought that season and didn't get the crops they needed or anticipated. Then help them construct an irrigation system and resovoirs to prevent it from happening again. It's endless what could be done and with a solid foundation built you can then enable yourself to get donations and grants and have an even greater affect...but it all has to start somewhere.
Of course I'll still want to construct my modest 4,800+ sq. ft. modern industrial shop & loft with about 40% dedicated to living area and the rest as a fabrication, repair, and garage ;) Plus I know where a killer subdivision up in the mountains are that never had a single lot sold. Just a perfectly paved road with banks and turns like that of a world class circuit track, they built a demo house up front and locked the gate a couple years later. Most of the land is too steep to build on or would be too expensive make it worthwhile, not including the grading for each driveway. I would purchase the entire place, close out the road so it made a loop and have my own test track with a guest house up front and my place in the middle somewhere. Is that too much too ask for?! :)

86% of multy million lottery winners end up broke again a few years later. Thats straight from the GA lotto people.
Most people do not know how to handle that amount of money. Im sure most of us would have a hard time also.
All I see while reading this thread is, I will buy this, give family that, I would buy this 20 bedroom house... Thats where it all goes wrong.
INVESTING is the key. I saw a show on T.V where a dude received 11 Million after all the junk fees. He stayed living in his apartment, still driving his F150 and for the next 5 years he became a investing machine... Literally made over 100 Million out of that 11 in about 5 years.. Hes one of the biggest success story in US history became rich out of lotto winnings.
Shit, If I won even 100K.. I would invest that and change nothing.. keep my life routine and move on.
Some people dont know how to handle wealth... especially when you used to making 30 K a year.
Mo Money mo problems, only applies to idiots.

Those people that go broke make the first mistake in buying shit they could have never afforded in the first place. Yea, go ahead and buy that 20 bedroom palace and goldplate the roof, and buy yourself 3 ferrarri's and 3 Lambo's. Just remember to lube your asshole when the tax man cometh. Property Tax, Ad Valorem, not to mention that CD and Savings/ earnings tax on that cool million in the bank....
I would just buy a nice house big enough for my family, prob. a 4/5 bedroom 3 baths (for when people want to come over and crash), build myself a nice entertainment room with pool etc. buy a new car and leave it at that.... Put the rest away and invest the other. Open some offshores and just live happy with the family.

I agree with Julio here, its not the asshole thing and I believe some people do NEED help but I'm convinced that some people make a living off of bumming from others.. I bought a meal for a guy a couple of weeks ago and I dont get that warm feeling any more from helping people that are physically and mentally able to put theirselves in a better position. My motto is now.. fuck em. When people can move here from other countries, provide for theirself and their family what excuse do you have when you've been here all your life and haven't done anything but take from society?
I'll just flat out say it.. if I won the lotto I'd be 10x the asshole I've ever been. Does that mean I've changed? No, I'm just sure more people would bring it out of me than they do now.

It depends on how much, if its alot more then I could spend. I would pay off all my debuts and my fiances.....I dont think he has anyways. I would buy my family a house, and Chris' mom anything she wanted, invest and save alot. I would also buy a house for Chris and I, a couple of cars oh and an HDTV cause thats what he really wants. For me um dunno car, house would be my major thing...pretty much the one thing I have always wanted. I am sure more, but I cant think of any

I would buy a Z and deck it out, then buy a new skyline and deck that out too.
Rebuild the house I used to live in, since it sits on 1/2 acre on a quiet street.
Then buy a small island, move there (b/c right now the US sucks)
and put the rest in a swiss bank acct, giving it out to family that ACTUALLY NEEDS IT and donating some to charity.

yeah hands down i'd be happier... i cant see how someone can oppose that. A large amount of the big problems i've had in life, when i traced them down they came to money. For example, breaking a law: getting busted, court fees, etc otherwise who gives a fuck, right? ... fuckin "what about my record" ... Why does your "record" matter? Think about it.... "getting a job?", etc ... "insurance rates" etc Its just the root of a lot of problems.... An instant boost will surely solve those problems and create a new set of problems, but IMO, those problems are something that i've never faced before... ya know? People are saying that a large lump sum will kill "the struggle" who says its not a struggle to manage what you got? Its not as easy as you think... half the mofos who go broke 1 yr after a large payout are the same chappelle show "I'm rich beeyoch" people...
anyways there it is... in essence I dont see how receiving money can be a bad thing... Regardless. (with the right mindset- that is)
I would be happier personally. First I would buy my g/f an engagment ring. Move back to Canada and live a normal life. Have a normal size house somewhat new car, and keep a normal and steady car. I would stick all the money I won nto the bank and save it. I wouldn't go nuts and buy all this shit I have ever wanted.

I would go on a 3 month vacation to find a new country to move to. Japan, Great Britian, Germany, Italy, Australia, Brazil.....
Probably live in Japan for awhile and do some business in Hong Kong. Get even richer by starting a big company, and then build fast cars and flirt with beautiful women. I would also get my pilot's license so I could travel anytime... all by myself.... just fly away for awhile.
One day, I would hope to own my own little exotic car company, and work on a greener car for the enthusiasts.
