When it comes to getting a car. What the hell is the real difference between and automatic and a manual.. and i know theres a clutch and a shifter i dont need a smartass comment lol.. .. but i mean is there a sacrifice in power response time etc.. which one is better to choose.. thanks..

depends on wht you want to do- a manual lets you actually DRIVE the car- and automatic you just pilot it to where you are going.

i like manual better not because of the changing gears, but because of having a clutch as opposed to a torque converter. torque converter = homo

I've got manual, just as 99% of the people on IA do-smart choice.

I have had both auto and manual. Autos are nice in traffic, but I drive a manual in an hour of rush hour one way, everyday. It doesnt really bother me. Makes the drive a little more fun, but I have a WRX. If I was driving a turd, id probably get pissed at it LOL

I prefer manual. I hate they way autos shift for you. With a stick i'm in whatever gear i want, whenever i want. I don't have to wait three seconds form the instant i put my foot down, to when it actually down shifts.

automatics get boring after a while, you put your foot down it goes..thats it but a manual...like everyone said you hav control of your car and can play with it more...id get a manual but if you dont know how to drive a manual...unless you learn quickly..get an automatic

I had an auto in my WRX. With the high-stall torque converter it was as fast as a similarly modded manual WRX. That tranny blew up so I swapped in a 5speed and tuned for more boost. The car is way more fun nowadays even though I got better mileage with the auto.

Get a manual like they said they are more fun thn an auto. Plus if you are with friends and they down shift and leave you can do the same thing. With an Auto its going to take a few seconds for you to pick up speed.

I guess a serious answer to your question would be:

Performance wise an auto will shift just as quick as a manual. Most modern autos allow you hold the car in 3rd gear for quick downshifts into 2nd for rolling acceleration. The main problem comes with launching automatics; most OEM torque converters dont have a high enough stall speed so you bog off of the line since you're launching at 3000rpm or so. Most automatic cars can pick up at least a half second at the strip with a new torque converter. Launching is simple and consistent.

The downsides are that torque converters tend to lose some power unlike a clutch which is a direct connection to the engine. You can get locking torque converters but these can reduce the reliability of the TC as well as the tranny. The other big problem is that heat kills automatic trannies, if you're running big power (or even moderate power) a transmission cooler and some good auto tranny fluid will be detrimental in keeping your transmission alive. Be sure to let the tranny cool down between hard runs and it should last you a while. In order to make the transmission hold more power you must increase the line pressure to the clutchpacks. Some cars let you increase the pressure with electronic controllers (I know 300ZXs have this), others you must swap in built valvebodies and high performance clutchpacks.

I just learned how to drive a manual about 6 months ago and even with it being quite annoying in traffic I enjoy it better than an auto.

I have both.

My Solara is Auto and I love it.. is all about comfort, especially after a long day of work, I really dont want to deal with shifting on certain days. More relaxed driving.

My TT is Manual, great for driving hard and getting in and out of traffic and I feel I have more control over the car. Inspired driving.

I hate driving a manual in traffic.. sucks ass. personal prefrence. =]

I have an auto tranny. The older preludes came with an amazingly responsive and quicker shifting auto tranny. Its true you lose power and there are other downsides with an auto but I've pretty much learned out to work around them. I'm easily able to keep up with experienced manual drivers on some of the mountain runs i've been on.

But then again, I would probably, most undoubtedly do better with a manual transmission. But many people are ill-informed into thinking that there is no possible way an automatic transmission can perform well.

Depends what car your gonna get though.. If your gonna get a automatic and race with it.. Then say goodbye to your tranny.. Automatic is just for relaxing and cruising around. But I still prefer Manual =) Lot more fun.

Correct me if I'm wrong but, nowadays cars with automatics are faster than manuals. Wasnt the Supra like this too? Top end drag racers use automatic.

As for personal experience, there are both the good and the bad. I can control my speed with a manual opposed to an automatic because your controls are right there. I find myself lazy and get sick and tired of driving a manual. I say get one so you can experience it and fit in with the "cool" people on IA lol

Yeah. Do that and see how long your tranny lasts.
