Ok, I am new at this whole car / import thing, so I was wanting some opinions... I am a college student running on a very limited budget, but I want to fix up my 96 Honda Civic DX for a racecar. Could anyone point me in the right direction for the right motor to use? I was thinking VTEC, but dunno. Thank you in advance.
IVE SEEN PPL USE MINI VANS AS RACE CARS SO AS FAR AS THEY ARE CONCERENED WHEN U STEP ON THE GAS U GOT URSELF A RACE CAR. U GOTTA BE MORE SECIFIC ON WHAT U WANT. VTEC? SOHC (SINGLE OVERHEAD CAM) DOHC (DUAL OVERHEAD CAM). DO U WANT BOOST. DO U WANT TO STAY ALL MOTOR? WHAT KINDA TIMES/POWER DO U WANT? AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, HOW MUCH MONEY U TRING TO SPEND.

give up....as soon as you said "i'm on a very limited budget" and "I want to build a race car" i knew you were a lost cause.
also what kind of racing are you looking to do? will this be both your project & daily driver or do you have a backup?

lol true...about a 100 shot on the civic would be great fun for about 10 seconds, then hes gonna need to turn on the windshield wipers....right before you spray you need to mix some degreaser in with your windshield washer fluid, it will clean the oil off of your winshield.
ID RUN A 75 SHOT ON A CIVIC. ASK CHARLES AT MAINSTREAM HOW A EF D-SERIES WITH 200K ON IT RUNS WITH A 75 SHOT ON IT. HE CAN TELL U BOUT A 250 SHOT ON IT AS WELL. I DNT THINK THAT STORY WOULD CONVINCE NE BODY TO RUN A 250 SHOT ON A OLD ASS STOCK D-SERIES THOUGH. WELL I WOULD DO IT BUT THEN AGAIN IM NOT NORMAL. LOL!!!!

Well, thanks for all of the replies, and guess that I wont get it done, or find a REALLY cheap engine, but to answer a few of the questions, I want a VTEC, and low budget like I said. Thanks anyways.

how low is your budget, give us a number.
if its $1000, your kind limited to nitrous, I/H/E etc.
if you say $2000, then you could do an EBAY turbo kit

Well, see the thing about that is, that the engine doesnt even run right now, so I wasnt worried about NOS just yet, or anything like that, I just want to go ahead and put a new engine that runs in it first. Then worry about the other later.

then i would buy a D15B sohc VTEC motor from Hmotorsonline.com. I would buy the whole swap with TRANSMISSION. put a clutch in it, maybe a cheap ebay header an call it a day.
$1000 wont get you ANY DOHC vtec motors. MAYBE an ls motor MAYBE, but thats on the CHEAP CHEAP.
this is assuming you do all the work yourself

you can find a b18a1 (90-93 integra ls) motor for around $400-500 dollars. HOWEVER, when you go this route, you will have to keep in mind that you will need new motor mounts (~$300), shift linkage, b-series transmission, axles and halfshafts to match your b-series tranny, etc. the price starts to go up when you go from a d-series engine to the b-series. not to mention the fact that you will have to change out the headgasket, timing belt, and water pump on a swap...
anyways, go with the d15b from hmotorsonline. everyone that has one, loves theirs. it would be a direct swap (no new mounts, no new shift linkage, you could...although i'd recommend against it...use your stock transmission.)

It sound like you need to alot of research before asking such a broad question like I want my civic to be a ricecar oops, racecar. It adds up quick and it is nothing but a money pit. Your civic will probably never be a "racecar" but it can be a car that is fun to drive. Thats where I would end it.
If you can find a good priced ls motor swap do that, b/c i'm guessing u want to learn more about these kinds of cars, so later on you can do the ever famous ls/vtec swap (which is some block work and a head swap depending on how much you are willing to spend) but the ls should make you happy for a while.
