Ok guys, i recently (a few months ago) aquired a civic cause a guy couldnt pay my boss for labor...Since i have got the car, he gave it to me for free to learn how to build with ZERO help on his part so if i fuck it up, its on me. Its great cause its the best way for me to learn shit.

Last week, i redid the head gasket cause the guy said it overheated so when i got the car, i figured that was the problem (white smoke). So i redid the head gasket, timing belt, water pump, Radiator, etc.

Here is my question: it is smoking black smoke pretty badly....Will Bad valve st

Im pissed off at myself for not checking the pistons nor having the time to do a full rebuild to check the rings. HOWEVER, i DO beleive that the rings are still good. my question however (which would clarify this for me a bit) is wether or not valve seals being worn would make me lose power??

From my understanding, if i have worn valve seals, oil gets into my combustion chamber...the car seems to run fine at hgiher RPM's, just smokes alot. but when i take off, it feels like my timing is off but im 99% sure my timing is correct.

Sorry for the book so i geuss the only answer i need is if worn valve seals would cause power loss

thanks for any help...

its a 93 lx d15...im pretty sure its oil...it doesnt smell like its running rich and when i waswalking around it, it had a oily smell. i set the timing and im still pretty sure its right on but havent rechecked it yet.

if it smokes at idle, or if it smokes on ACCELERATION, its oil control rings. if it had a blown headgasket, the coolant can eat rings an bearings pretty damn fast

thats what i was thinking. damnit. so i should just do a compression test first before i even do seals then?

yes do a comp test, but even that wont be accurate

I dont know if this helps but the guy was having problems passing emissions (damn it just hit me i need to get the emissions copy and see why it failed) and he took it to another shop cause it was running warm....They told him his fan wasnt kicking on. they replaced the fan relay and did a coolant flush. He brought it to our shop and the fans worked fine. he left cause he had to go to work and 20 minutes later called and said that it had overheated. got it back and voila, blown headgasket.

do a comp test. ALthough, if its bad rings, there will be oil in the combustion chamber so your numbers may "test" out fine. Compression tests only tell the top 2 rings, not the oil control rings.

if the oil control rings arent scraping the oil off the cylinder walls, then its getting by the compression rings and burning oil.

Pull the plugs an see if they are wet.

pulled the plugs yesterday when i took off the VC cause we were going to do valve seals and plugs were clean They MAYBE have 50 miles on them since i put them in

did the water get into the oil?

so since my plugs were clean is it a same asusmption that it may not be rings?

no neccesarily.

id still lean towards rings if its consuming oil, personally

yeah true. im just pissed off at myself for not going ahead and doing rings but eh, i really just wanted to get it running and hell, if i get a few thousand miles out of it, ill get a swap then

yeah vss can cause it to smoke. however I have to lean more towards the ring issue also. coolant in the combustion chamber can do all kinds of bad things

You can have good compression readings and the oil rings still be bad. Also depending on how bad it was overheated its very likely that the head and/or deck on the block are warped, and if they are warped enough replacing the headgasket will do no good. Did you check the head and block with a straightedge while you had it apart?
