first of all, I have to keep my car quiet, so I know this might sound like a strange question, but how much on average will gutting out the catalyc converter on a car cause it to be? and btw the car is a 90 civc. don't bother asking why can't I have my car loud, all i need to know is it a lot louder at idle - 4k rpms mostly it doesnt really matter one way or other at near redline RPM's

It is on a DPFI D series motor dead stock. I dont think it will be THAT loud.

Gutting out the cat? just get a test pipe! like 20 bucks on ebay! If everything is installed correctly, it wont be loud at all! gain a few ponies!

why do you need a 2hp gain while you sneak out at night?? Tired of waking up mom and dad??
TheGodfather
10-02-2006, 10:17 PM
It shouldn't be too much louder, but a mild difference. I don't know if you would notice it. Why not just do a full exhaust setup, and then add some resonators to eliminate any excess sound you don't want.

ok, I was going to chime in on the thread but it doesnt make sense to, since he should not be messing with the car and two he has no money to do anything, and gutting the cat to get more hp out of a dpfi motor with stock exhaust is not worth the trouble doing the work to it.

Who said anyone wouldn't notice the car being louder?, that is the whole issue of this thread... Its not like he never rides in my car, if it was very noticibly louder obviously I would not want that.
what is he trying to accomplish with the gutted cat?? power?? LIRL, not going to happen
Its a DPFI D15 motor do you really think I am expecting power from it??? But there is nothing wrong with small improvements, so why not do it?
He has the issue "I wish I had a fast car so I am going to pretend and do mods"
Alritey than.

I have enough money, I could even buy myself a different car, but that would mean no more money to do anything with, maybe sometime later though. How difficult is it to gut out a cat anyways??

try gutting yours and you will find out it isnt as easy as you think
bad idea. don't do it. wait until you can do something worthwhile.

gutting out a cat is a pain in the ass... good luck getting it off of a 16 year old car too... every time I h ave done it on an older car like that, the bolts are rust welded into one fucking piece, so I just cut it off with a sawzall. I say you go all out and remove the whole exhaust system minus the manifold, and get someone to weld you on a 90* elbow and a short strait section exiting right in front of the front passenger side tire. Your next mod should be one of those "Fear This" stickers they sell at autozone.

LIRL, no problem. i thought offering you the solution of doing a swap was the best since you obviously dont realize what gutting the cat will do/not do. why dont you just do a MPFI swap then if you want a little more power. I just think its funny how you say things to the effect of how you cant afford something like a exhaust, but yet you have money to buy another car..

MPFI you can see, its not like someone is going to open up the cat and check around inside.

how do you plan on gutting the cat?? do you not think your dad would wonder if the exhaust is holy and look and see a slit in it or some cuts?? your dad would notice a different manifold on the car but not notice a exhaust difference?? whatever man. Im sure he has not taken any good looks at any parts of the exhaust system ever, and a different manifold is pretty noticibly different.
