So my first day checking out the mountain run before I actually bring my car out to run... Met a few cool guys... especially Jamal...
all was well till Jamal swerves a lil off the road... goes for a bit on grass hits a 2ft wall goes FLYING 3 FEET off the ground... manages to fall back in an empty grass area... breaks off his back bumper and has a radiator leak... my pics sucks (camera phone) but i'm sure COGcaviZ24 will post pictures from an actual camera... Jamal is at COGCaviZ24's shop trying to get his radiator fixed up... sorry i guess i didn't catch your name COGcavi... well it was nice meeting ya'll and i hope you get your car back in one piece Jamal!

I'll just say I've been in the autoX and time attack scene for awhile with a stock suspension car with upgraded bushings and brakes and have since then added $1300 to the suspension alone. I've also been doing Mtn Runs in a state with 10x more drastic areas than anywhere I've found here yet.
If you were trying to warn any ricers about speeding around the Mtn to a point where they couldn't control it and possibly screw up someone else and/or your crew than I understand where you're coming from. I don't believe we have any of that kind coming with us on this sunday nor next sunday (which I'm hoping stays sunny). Take it easy man!

If he has done soooooo many "Mtn Runs in a state with 10x more drastic areas than anywhere I've found here yet" how exactly do you miscalculate at a 10x LESS drastic area? Sounds like someone isn't as experienced as they let on to me....

Go up by yourself. The way to learn your limits and your car isnt necessarily following others, i gained alot of experience by driving in the mtns after school and durin free time by myself

yea by following others you might be tempted to go faster than you actually can handle trying to catch up and then you're fucked.. but eventually you will be going in groups and you might have to catch up at times.. catch up in the straight areas not when it curves  so my noob advice is dittoing green..you would be to get the feel for it yourself then practice on finding your limit... I might consider going by myself one day since I saw how it was today...

Ha, I just chuckled a bit that you're comparing some amateur to a pro race driver pushing his car 110% and still maintaining control.
Sorry to see that your car is fucked up but glad to hear you're alright and the car isnt totaled. Last time I heard a similar story one of my friends slid his WRX halfway down a mudbank and totalled it. A lot of locals up in the mountains will spread gravel and oil on the curves just to force bikers and idiot drivers to slow down.

There are a lot of idiots on this board........I never said I was a pro driver or anything. Everyone has some slip up or fuck up once in awhile, and this was mine! At that point in time in driving we weren't even really gunning it, more of just cruising down into Helen to grab a bit to eat. Thanks to all of the more mature members of this site who had more concern to the situation! Nice hanging out with ya Lil Paki and Dominic! Nice E30 too!
Final toll on the car is a blown head, bent radiator support, killed rear bumper, and a slightly bent rear axle. Nothing serious at all for what actually happened and I'm surprised it stayed together as well as it did. Good time all in all!

Hey thanks man! That's what I like about it though! Taking a car that wasn't meant to do anything BUT be an economical grocery getter and turn it into something decent. That's why I find it HIGHLY hilarious that people with honda's, 240sx's, etc talk as much shiz as they do. True some may have that racing heritage behind their name but Nissan nor did Honda build their lower market cars to be anything of what they are today! People have done hardcore things with them to give them that "street rep" to where they're accpeted in most cases. I could care less if anyone ever respects a cavalier, but from knowing how shatty a cavalier comes, I have much respect to see what they're capable of and didn't mind investing money into mine to follow that path.
And Thanks Corey and Andy! Some people will never grow up no matter how much they put on the act.........

I didn't take any crazy risks with passing! I do respect other drivers on the road (and anyone on this run will attest to me slowing down respectively for any biker, person hiking, or slow moving vehicle.) I'm not the one to fly past everyone doing 90 just to be ignorant and attempt to scare them. I'd hate to bring my little sister up there or friends just to encounter doing something crazy, so I keep that in mind also.
Edit: And if you want a viable excuse, I'm sure when Andy took that photo, he was much closer to Dominic in the e30! Because of the wide angle of the lense on the camera it makes everything look much more out of porportion than they really are! That curve wasn't anywhere near within 80ft of us, and Dominic wasn't 6 cars ahead of Andy! We stayed pretty tight after everyone figured out their limits in the beginning (I guess I didn't, OMG'ers lolerz....)
And don't worry, I wouldn't want a nOOb who's arrogant to the fact that everyones car doesn't handle on rails with me on one anyone!
It's like nagging at someone who loves to drift when they spin their car into an embankment! It comes with the territory, get over it.....

Food for thought.
I have been running up in the mtns for many, many years. It is a very rare occurance for me to make a mistake on the track or on the street; however, if you have not been off the road in the mtns at least a couple of times, it is highly unlikely that you will become very fast. In learning your personal and your vehicle limits, it is inevitable that you will make errors in judgement.
Learn from your mistakes and figure out how to avoid them next time. Do not let this be a lesson that you did not learn something from.

Bahahahaha! You are completely ignorant to what racing heritage and factory teams did. Two examples of this that people that are on IA own:

Both "econo boxes," yet both had factory backing. When has GM factory backed a J body for anything that has to do with professional road racing besides John Lingenfelter? And that wasn't actually factory backing. I won't even get into the racing heritage Honda/Mugen has with the CRX. And a JDM 240SX/Silvia was made with a 2.0l turbo engine, but not marketed as a performance vehicle? You must be kidding. And how about the SE-R Cup cars? A Sentra "econo box" 1 make series....backed by Nissan. Need I go on? I can pull out Nissan ads that talk about Pete Brock winning 2 championships for Nissan. You don't want to play this game with me.
The bottom line is that a "veteran time attack, Mountain run man" such as yourself wouldn't have made such a novice mistake.....even driving a J body.

history lesson ftw!! since you directly said honda and 240 im assuming your taking that shot at me since ive got a civic and a 240sx.. but how could you say they did not intend for them to become what they are? the EF9 SiR (civic) was one of the first hondas with VTEC, with a first gen b16. the 240 was built to be a decently powered RWD sports car, coming with a 2.0 in japan with stock forged internals along with a near perfect weight distribution, independant suspension, and 4 wheel disc.. you think they never intended for it to be more than a "econobox" put-around car??

David88vert, I was just waiting on someone with some sense to post something like that. That's the truth with anything motorsports! I've yet to know anyone on an autoX course or actual track who hasn't gotten alittle squirrely or has taken it into the tirewall while pushing it hard. It's a common story to the point where it's barely mentioned. That's not saying everyone can't hold traction while pushing their car but I've yet to meet them. Truthfully, this was the first time out there with the new suspension set-up. I've been used to the body roll giving me some warning on that particular section where we were but this time it was stiff and threw me right out of the apex.
What was ironic about that section of the circle we were on (before I had the accident) I warned everyone about how the turns on that particular highway are long and flat, also, they even angle to the outside in some areas (which this turn was). So when I got to it I was caught off gaurd by how much it threw me out and by the time I semi found a way to correct it, my right rear was caught hold by the embankment and it pulled the whole car into it.
As said by the couple people i've done Mtn runs with in the past....try to feel out your car soon because it's very unforgiving out here. Most of the turns we were doing earlier (hwy 180 to point out one) had banked corners so you have to pretty much be a true idiot to lose control on them. These turns were just forgotten from the last time I was up and i put too much confidence in the new suspension from the earlier roads to really be on my toes for these.
And green91........I could care less about arguing over something I already explained. If someone is childish enough to still feel it neccesary to flex their E-balls about that then they're immature enough to be ignored :goodjob:

Haha you're a tard........
You FAIL to see what I had posted.....
Lets go back!
True some may have that racing heritage behind their name but Nissan nor did Honda build their lower market cars to be anything of what they are "USED FOR" today!
Maybe I should have put "used for" in the place you see it, for you to get what I was talking about....
Ok ok ok! I'm sure Nissan TOTALLY had drifting planned out when they marketed their nissan S13, S14, S15, Skyline, etc etc etc....
I'm sure they planned on full engine management systems to be made, 50mm+ turbo's to be used, super wide tires and crazy suspension set-ups to be installed. I'm sure you get the point....
In essence NO car company from the 1980's that's still around today had any idea of what was to come of their lower line of cars made at the time in the hands of our Gen......
History lesson! LMFAO.....Just because I drive a cavalier doesn't mean I don't do car research and enjoy vintage motorsports......

You can push your little crossing the double line as a ricer move but I didn't drive from newnan to N. GA to be held up by a 20mph van in a 45mph zone either. Nor did I travel that far for me to end up with a busted car. Shit happens, if you've made your point, move on to the next thread to talk more :blah: or call it a night! :2cents:

Food for thought.
I have been running up in the mtns for many, many years. It is a very rare occurance for me to make a mistake on the track or on the street; however, if you have not been off the road in the mtns at least a couple of times, it is highly unlikely that you will become very fast. In learning your personal and your vehicle limits, it is inevitable that you will make errors in judgement.
Learn from your mistakes and figure out how to avoid them next time. Do not let this be a lesson that you did not learn something from.
now u have pissed me off the mtns and public roads are not the place to be driving off and making mistakes. that is want hpde's are for making a mistake in the mountains or any public road can kill people. take it to the track its fine to drive fast in the mtns but know your limits and stay away from them or do everyone else a favor and kill yourself.

No where is the place to make driving mistakes or errors. The fact of the matter is... Shit happens... Making mistakes anywhere with driving can hurt people. Although wishing death upon someone because they push their limits is screwed up. Everyone has had times where they have pushed themselves. They went to the mountains on an un-crowded day and weren't even messing around when the accident occured. It is amazing that he straightened it out under the conditions and managed to save himself from hitting it sideways and rolling around. I just dont think getting on a thread and wishing death uopn someone is right. He made a mistake. It happens.

Well agree with you there because I don't think it is right to go past your limits. There is never a time when going past your limits is ok in driving. I also completely agree with you on the track aspect. It is much better to take your car to the track and get your speeding out of you there. However, the fact of the matter is, the mountains are an amazing place to drive and it is fun up there. I think that you are right but you made assumptions that he was doing stupid shit that wasn't called for. Also, I do see where you think that he makes it seem like its ok. It isn't ok. Messing your car up and brushing it off is horrible, but I don't think that is what he is doing. I simply think that he realizes what has happened and knows there is nothing he can do about it now but try to get his car fixed and learn from the experience. He just brushed it off online but away from the computer knows what happened and won't make the same mistake again.

No offense, but the local autocross scene here in ATL is not the stongest and two years is still very little experience. To have a better understanding of the car's dynamics requires much more experience.
Bballjamal
10-02-2006, 03:43 PM
Sucks for atlanta! I was in the west where it is pretty strong, but I do agree that's no where near enough time to qualify as any hardcore experience! I feel I was held back by mostly practicing on only two track courses and I do think the autocross set-ups could've been more challenging! I've ran at Mission Raceway(located in British Columbia) and was broken into track racing at Pacific Raceways in Auburn, WA. I did that for alittle over a a year and 1/2 and have had the rest of my 2yrs down here in GA, where I would say is pretty weak compared to anythng out west! There's events going on year round and you always get to hit semi pro events where you can ride along on practice sessions with the level below semi pro (I forget what they're referred to as)!
We all know though that the roads this country has to offer differ greatly than any racetrack in this country. Most people involved in these racing events feel they get more experience out in real world situations, as becoming a better driver, because of the forever changing natural obstacles you have to overcome. A track is always prepped, cleaned, and maintained while roadways give in many instances. Not saying or encouraging people to practice on busy or even less dense roadways, but I like to build a knowledge of the changes in natural settings first, then eventually be able to take it to a track where things are controlled in a sense, and feel if it were easier. The same concept as your better motocross guys improving their skill by free riding where they can't predict what's coming. Once they feel comfortable in an non-uniform enviornment, going to a motorcross comp seems like cakewalk to them.
Mike Lowrey
10-02-2006, 03:50 PM
Yeah, I came from Florida where there were 6-10 National champion autocross drivers at the local events. That along with beginning my autocross experience in a car that is surely not a beginners car, helped alot. I want to do more track events, but that will come once the track car is ready for Spring.

on top of what jamal said. yes, we are aware that mtn runs are unlawful and could potintualy harm bystanders. that's why this one was done on sunday during church hours. we can't control all the aspects of it, there is too many variables, but try to elminate as much as possible (btw, mtn run at nite are just dumb). but you don't see anyone telling the streetbikers, cruiser bikes, and cyclists(G.D. douchebags) not to do it. and your going nuts of over a small group of CAVALIERS mtn running, but i'm sure you'd applaud the group lotuses and porche's that were out there haulling ass.
hell i'm a father! i'd hate to have someone hit a car vehicle with him inside( which did happen, one week after his was born) or for me to die up there. but that's how confindent/confortable i am with my car. but there is always a chance things can go wrong.....as did with jamal. the title of this could have said "jamal died during mtn run" but it didn't.
hey.....
i dont drive a cavy!!!

Yeah, I came from Florida where there were 6-10 National champion autocross drivers at the local events. That along with beginning my autocross experience in a car that is surely not a beginners car, helped alot. I want to do more track events, but that will come once the track car is ready for Spring.
Ahh so you started rough! I was told if I'm sticking with the particular car I had to start with it stock and progressively get better at controlling what I have! As I mod it, do it in bulk so I notice the difference the whole makes instead of changing things bit by bit.

My second ever autocross was an SCCA ProSolo II event driving a Toyota MR2 Turbo in the rain... :)

all I know is I saw what I thought to be a beat up cavilier and was wondering what happened to it...
Notes:
-Going around a semi off balance curve at around 55-60
-Threw the car out a tad in the rear
-rear right tire caught the grass and pulled the car into a ditch
-after correcting the car from being sideways I hit a 3ft storm drain
-flew about 5ft into the air
-landed about 20+ feet away from where I was launched
Damage:
-radiator was bent in about 10in. on driver side
-opened a 1/2in. hole on top of radiator and leaked coolant
-rear bumper torn completely off
-rear axle has a slight dent that put the camber to about +2 in the right rear
-driver side wheel was bent back and camber is off about -4
-Engine overheated and cracked head (what we think so far)
Me and JDMJayDC2 took off the valve cover and saw that one of the valves was bent connecting to the rocker arm. It was on the 2nd rocker arm of the #1 cylinder. I'll be taking the head off tomorrow and will be seeing what exactly happened on the top side of the block and if it was just a valve that floated, cracked head, etc.
Also, thanks Jorje! Some people just feel it neccesary to bitch when the uncommon happens :screwy:

its in teh middle of the night, on roads that are made for it, when there are other cars doing the same thing
what roads are "made for it"? and how does doing it in the middle of the night make it any safer?
EVERYONE seems to be missing the point... don't drive like an asshat on public roads. go to the mountains, drive the roads, enjoy them; but don't push it to the limit in some attempt to be a badass or inflate your ego. no matter what day of the week or time of day it's just not safe to do so, period. there's a large difference between a spirited run and being stupid. if you don't know the difference then stay away until you do.

While driving on mountain roads, no matter how careful you are driving or how uncareful you are being mistakes happen...I knew a guy in HS that died up in the mountains driving slowly back from his grandparent's house in the mountains because his tire blew out and he went over a cliff...
If you make a mistake it is how you recover from the mistake that counts not what you did to prevent it cas it already happened... sounds like to me that he got lucky\driving skill he was able to prevent any other harm...I have never meet him before, but if I hadnt already had plans I prolly would have been in the pack with him...

Well the lesson learned is if you run off a mtn road that were designed for fast driving and crack your radiator, you will likely float a valve, especially in a cavalier that for some reason wasnt designed to fly "5 feet" in the air.
But the good news is now it gives him a reason to actually build his car using the parts in his sig roll car that have been there for 3 years and he can finally break into the 13s.

true... to a point. but when you're in over your head mistakes happen much more quickly and freqently. passing a semi on the outside of an off camber turn was a bad decision and it cost him.
i'm not really commenting on the accident at hand anyway, more to the people encouraging using the mountains as a place to find your limits. they are not the place to do it, plain and simple. yes accidents can happen anytime whether you're driving miss daisy or setting a new land speed record, but take a guess at who's more likely to eat it (and in a grand fashion) ;).

you might wanna read again. no one said he was passing a semi on the outside. besides, that would put the semi in the wrong lane  LOL
