View Full Version : Misc Router question/help.
Alright yesterday i switched over to comcast cable internet, i had bellsouth Dsl. I was using a router with the bellsouth dsl to run to my xbox, and my pc, it ran fine. And now with the comcast cable modem, i cant run both thru the router, if i get online on my xbox, i cant get online with the pc, and likewise. Im thinking that my router is putting both connections on the same ip address, and blocking the other form connecting. so do i need to get another router, that will let me have seperate ip address?

did you try to reset the router? I have had that problem from time to time and i would just push the reset button and then unplug it, plug it in and then hit reset again and unplug it for 5 mins or so and then plug it in and it would work...not very technical but it worked
yea i did that, same thing happens.

I don't have comcast, but it is standard that you are using the same IP address. This is true for any DSL or cable modem/router. Having the same IP address is no issue. It's just shared with all your computers. So, you don't need another router.
Since I don't have comcast I suspect, that comcast limits how many computers can use the internet. It does this by limiting to your MAC address. You may have to spoof the MAC address on your router to be the MAC address of your computer.
What is your comcast modem connected to? A router, a hub, a switch...etc.???
What router are you using?
This is how your connection should be like:
Your comcast modem should connect directly to a router's WAN/Internet port. Then you computer should connect to the router's hub or switch.
comcast modem >> router >> your home network (include your xbox and computer)
You may have have your router configured incorrectly.
thats how i have it connected. Im using a microsoft router. how do i configure the router?

Call comcast and pay the extra $5 or so per month to have more than one connection at a time.

Actually i have comcast and im using a Linksys WRT54G and i have my 360, Desktop, PSP, and Laptop connected Just fine (360 and Desktop wired). I would suspect something misconfigured in the router itself.

Your correct. What probably happened is that your router is setup to automatically retrieve an IP from your DSL modem since bellsouth modems also double as routers (Most ppl don't know this) But anyway, what you need to do is log into your router. Where it asks for connection type change it to Cable Modem, Then there is an option somewhere, should be to clone the mac address and you want to do this. After that the router should restart and everything work fine. If not call your router manufacturer for technical support. You don't have to pay the queer $5 for comcast extra connections.

Ok if its a microsoft router there should have been a cd that comes with it for the software to configure it. If you don't have the CD then you should be able to go to microsoft's website and download the software. Also I think they have a special site for networking tech support. Let me know and i will try to help you further since i have a MS router at home myself.
mine didnt come with software.. only thing i found on the ms site was the pdf for the box.
