I've seen this before and I'm going to eventually do it. The main key to this and any other paint job is to go through the process as if you were getting several thousand dollars worth of paint sprayed on.

my only concern is durability in a few years??

if you look at cars that are painted w/ single stage paint in a few years they really dont hold up as well as base coat/clear car does.

real car paint really isnt that expensive depending on the color etc.. I painted one of my accords this weekend for less than $200. I bought a gallon of valspar ready to spray (reduced at the paint shop when i bought it) granada black pearl (factory honda color black w/ gold flake) for $68 and a gallon of clear w/ quart of hardener for around $100. which keep in mind my last gallon of clear i bought lasted me through two whole cars, a front fender, and my engine bay in my 97 accord.

painting isnt for anyone without alot of time & patience..

i love how everyone is stuck on how it "cant look good because its put on with rollers" .. all the rollers are for is the paint application.. the finish comes from wet sanding. hell you could use the same paint and a hvlp gun if you wish.

I've always wanted to try this, but I don't exactly want to do it on my Jetta since it's paint is fine. Whenever I get a full time project car to work on however, this is definitely one of the things I'll try. If it turns out bad, I'll just sand the car down and spray it flat black. :D

maybe a month or more, no sooner. gotta research it more, get everything i need, ill prob start practicing in 2 weeks, i can get a fender i need from certifit, so no preppinf needed, get all materials, and do it for about 2 days and see if i can perfect it on the fender, then do the car.

I have ordered my Saphire blue marine paint. 30 bucks shipped for a quart. Gonna try it out and see what happens. For the past few weeks I have been ready to shell out 1500 for a paint job, but there is so much bs involved with getting a car painted. It is impossible to get someone to call you back or they act like your an idiot and try to screw you.

I have a gun and compressor and have done some painting but it is such a pain in the ass. Supposedly I wont have to mix this stuff so we will see what happens. If not its just 50 bucks out.

you may still have to reduce it, to spray through a gun w/ normal Base coat clear coat tip (~.14) it needs to be just a hair thicker than water in consistancy so it doesn't clog up your gun. painting isnt a pain in the ass, prep is a pain in the ass. I would paint cars all day long if i had someone to do the prep for me.

as for the comment on stripping down to the bare metal, thats not true. Paint actually sticks better to old paint than it does to bare metal...why is strip a car down to the metal and prime the entire thing when you dont have to?

every car I have ever painted i just wetsanded with 400 grit, then 600 grit. the last car i did, the clear was flaking pretty bad on the roof and hood so i sanded all of the flaking clear off w/ some 180 grit on a DA sander, then followed up by wetsand w/ 400. it turned out great.

i was wondering the same too. I generally use almost a gallon of paint(after its reduced) if I'm doing an entire car. then about 1/4 gallon of clear.

Well after seeing some of the roll on results that is probably what I will do. I only ordered a quart so if I didn't like it I wont be out twice is much, and I still may go with yellow if the result is really well.

This isn't rustoleum it is a high quality, self-leveling, and polyurethane based paint. It is the equivalent of a very high quality single stage. No reducer or hardener or sealer required.

can you do this if you don't have a garage and do it outside? I would think too many imperfections would come out in the paint but I have nowhere to put the car but outside

I remember seeing one writeup where the guy did his outside and the only downside to that is that bugs got into the paint. He said he buffed it real well and it wasn't noticeable. If a certain spot looks bad, just sand down that body part and paint it again. lol

The guy who did the write up used the canandian rustoleum, Tremclad. What would be the closest thing to that in America??? He also used mineral spirits to thin it. I don't wanna stray to far away from what he said, but I don't want to have a hard time finding the exact shit. What else will work in place of the canadian stuff???

http://www.rustoleum.com/product.asp?frm_product_id=18&SBL=1

I actually found this right after I posted, so would this work??? Also, I was wondering, say I choose a color, would it make the paint have an even more professional finish if I did a clear coat over a gloss color??? Insted of doing a black gloss, would a flat black with a coat of clear be any better or does it not really matter???

well at that point you are going to need to spray the car...you might as well buy some real car paint. generally most base coats look flat anyways until you spray the clear. the more clear you spray on, the glossier the car in general...with metalic paints with lots of flake it wouldnt look as glossy as a car w/ no flake.

The consensus is that the clear does not help at all. Go back and read all of the mopar thread and whats on the H-T thread. I am using Interlux Brightside Marine paint. Google it, you may want to use it. You don't have to mix it and it is self leveling. The mustang on the first page was painted with that. A little more expensive but I think it is worth it considering it will be 75 compared to 50. Hopefully the paint will be in by the end of this week and I will show you guys some pictures.

I thought earlier in the thread he had said that he did that car the same way also. Even if he didn't it doesn't matter because the hatch still looks awesome.

BTW, the green teg looks good, if you can do prof, skip the $50 DIY....but spend $.50 on a new bumper to fender clip! :P

haha funny thats kinda hard which you have a 32 inch intercooler in your front bumper and you done cut half the bumper out to get it to fit and it still doesnt trust me if i could fix it i would im gonna half to do even more cutting though ;)

I also have a hvlp gun and others, a place to spray, and a compressor. But wether you roll it on or spray it on the paint is still getting onto the metal. Theoretically if you took a single stage paint that could be sprayed or rolled in the end after sanding and buffing it should look the same.

This is a single stage paint. It IS NOT going to be a "show" quality paintjob. I understand that a single stage paint for what it is, is not going to be better than a bc/cc that is mixed specifically for the purpose. But an awesome single stage paintjob is good enough for me. If you do it right it can look about as good as a factory job. My car came from the factory single stage to begin with anyways.

basicly the whole car, im using rustoleum professional gloss white. turning out pretty good!. basicly the car is just sitting my garage, so i just decide to give it a quickie paint job. it turns out pretty nice, glossy, but got that orange skin look to it. the trick to get it out is.... sanding.. sand with a rough grits then smooth out with 800 ish and it'll fade away. it was just experimental, but im definiately finishing it now.. just gotta get rid of a few dinks >.> white shows every single imperfection.

Thats awesome and it proves that you CAN do this and it doesn't look bad at all. Would you compare it to something like a good single stage paint after being sanded and buffed? How high of grit are you going to? I think I am going to be going to 1500 or so and hopefully it will look really good. I hope my paint came in today.

Post some pics!

I would :\ but my camera died like a year ago lol. but yea i would say it is a good single stage paint with buff+wax. its way better than a maaco paint job for sure. i went up to 1000 grits, would've been even better if u went higher grits for sure. Just take your time and go slow, the time you put into it shows in the end. goodluck. oh and what kind of paint are you doing?

you can clear coat it, but its not required. the finish product gonna be glossy anyway. but extra clear coat wouldnt hurt.

good choice on the color man. but...u'll need more sand paper than that ^^. somehow the final cost would probably jack you up toward 60-70$ish. its still good though :D

well mine is ending up being more like a 100$ paint job. But I just can't say enough for how awesome it is turning out. It is requiring a lot of sanding but it just looks so good. I payed like a 1000 for a "proffessional single stage" on one of my old cars and this looks about 9 times better.

Right now I just got done taking off mirrors, frunk (mid engine), engine lid, and trunk. Gotta take off the bumpers and put the first coat on them. I sanded the trunklid with 800 already and it turned out well. I will go to 1000 grit and then polish.

Like I said the paint is looking better than almost any factory job I have seen. Its taking alot of work but eventually I will get there and post some pictures.

The paint I am using is self leveling. I have seen some of the rustoleum stuff and that is what turned me off to it. I believe I can put down 2 coats and be able to get to 1000. I have put one coat on some pieces and sanded it completely flat with 600 and the thoroughly went over it with 800. Ill put another coat on and do a little required 800 and then to 1000.

I'm really suprised out how deep the paint looks and how well and thick it is laying out. For anyone who wants to do this I suggest going with Interlux brightside paint. Its the shizzle, and no mixing required.

Wow, people are really moving along with this thing! Turns out im not gunna start mine as soon as I thought cause I just can't do all of this myself. I don't know enough about body work. I gotta get a new hood and front bumper, and then I got to do something about the driver side rear panel cause a index card sized piece of metal fell off! I don't know if im gunna have to bondo it, or take it to a shop to weld it back on??? but once I actually get the body in "shape", then i'll paint it.:goodjob:

yea i did all the wetsanding by hand, i've developed some biceps from all that lol.
im not sure how to measure, i just add the thinner till the paint feels like its losen up and close to a watery feeling, but not as thin as water. but i've read somewhere it should be about 10% thinner though. not sure. i just mix it till it feels right.
stay calm and keep cool when doing body work it'll help :goodjob:

i used like 1000 grits to finish, but if u got more time and energy use up to 2000 and it'll become a mirror shine.
if u got an orbital buffer it'll help alot! unfortunately i dont have one so it kicked my ass too. just spend some time buffing one spot and let it dry for 5 mins and wipe it off. for the whole car expect to buff for an hour + 1/2 or so. >.> then wax. this diy painting thing isnt just great for ur wallet, but also for ur biceps too:boxing: :goodjob:

Well I got my paint in and tommorow will be the big day. I am going to have the whole car covered and unicolor for the first time in a few months. But I am still having problems with my wetsanding. I am sanding with 1000 grit by hand then using a 6" orbital buffer and 3m machine polish to buff it. I know the orbital buffer is not the best for the job but I figured it would be sufficient. When I get a good buffing it just looks like the paint has swirl marks. I dont want to have to buy a real high speed buffer and I dont even know if that will fix the problem. You guys have any suggestions?

seksehowy
12-23-2006, 10:36 PM
hurry and write a letter to santa clause for a highspeed buffer lol. but hm. i got swirls on mine too and im ok with it...its just a 50$ paintjob...other than that i'd suggest go 2000 grits and move ur arms really fast. 2000 grits would have less swirls though.

So I cheated. Its kind of funny though I have had people saying that they can't believe how good it is coming out. I've even had some people offer to buy the car. So, ironically I think the car might be going up for sale. The car is awesome but pretty soon I won't have the garage and anything anymore. Motorcycles are also calling my name again, for the third time. But I don't know. If someone was to offer me 4500 I would probably take it. So if you guys know anyone that wants a 91 Mr2 with awesome body, paint, and interior, hit me up. The car also has mbquart component speakers, a JL 8w0 behind the seat and tweeters. It is a rare hard top and everything works. It is in much better shape than a certain other blue mr2 on the FS section for 6200.

PS the paint is dry and not sanded. It just looks wet  :taun:

I just finished using this technique to paint my 92' Silvia clone black. Was skeptical at first but am a believer now. The results are excellent. Ill post some pics up real soon. Just got to put the damn thing back together...

Hey does anyone know about mixing pearls w/ this kind of paint?

R32Dragon

This paint technique piqued my interest so much that I decided to try it out on project Silvia. The paint was already crummy and didnt match the JDM front end so I figured whats the worst that could happen?

Sorry for the bad pics, was taken with a camera phone.

Here is a semi-before pic, Notice that the bottom here is painted black. The original plan was to do a grey on black two tone job. I decided to go with full on black after I saw how well the gloss black went on. The grey was a little too flat for my taste.

Here is a S13 model I put together to see what grey n black would look like. Nice, but the full on black is really warming up to me

I kept the hood silver...not to look ricey or nuth'n. Im getting an OEM style CF hood soon, so I didnt want to waste time and paint. Tell me what ya think?

well after u wetsand, it looks shitty, then thats when u put another coat, all wetsanding is ,is making it smoother for the next coat.

my hood turned out great, car will be finished sunday if i still have it, if not it will be next saturday.

Its different for dark colors I guess. After wetsanding mine, it become glossy and smooth without polish/wax.

if it has good paint, dont mess with it. this is not made for show car finish, its made for budget builders who want a decent/ good paintjob for cheap, its coming out great but its not gonna be amazingly OMG JDM PAINT JOB.
