View Full Version : Excessive fuel consumption... HELP!

Hi,

I am having a problem with my ED/EF Civic. It is going thru gas like it is .02 cents a gallon. I changed the oil and spark plugs on the car. The oil smells like gas, it may as well be gas because the smell is really strong. The spark plugs are charred black after two days of being installed. The old plugs looked the same way and those were a month old when I sold the car. I really do not have a clue as to what is causing it, but the Haynes book said that the timing may be off, emissions is fucked up, fuel injection are damaged or excessively worn. I think the injectors are stuck open but I do not know how to test this.

The guy at the parts store said run it for a couple days and check to see which cylinder is getting too much fuel. It is all of the cylinders that are getting too much fuel.

it could be lots of stuff, maf/map sensor, tp sensor, iat sensor, excessive fuel pressure, ect, o2 sensors....if u dont have adequate equitment it will be hard to tell. if could even be a dirty ari filter. i say take it to a shop where they can hook up a scan tool and watch the streaming data off the computer to see whats going on

Know any good indy shops around. I do not want to take it to the dealership unless I have to...

check your injector o-rings.
check your injector,
check your fuel system.

check your o2 again.
check all your connections.

if all fails, go to a shop.

What happens when my o-rings go? THe more air the more fuel goes into the system?

i would recomend the shop i work at but we dont like to mess with bmws and all too much esp with diagnostic stuff bc you bc u need special programs for scan tools to pull up a lot of daignostic stuff about the car, so i really dont know what to tell u on where to go

Where is your shop and how much is a diagnostic? I just need to know what is wrong with it because I am more then capable of fixing the car.

you'll know when your o-rings are gone. You can see fuel leaking on the injectors or clearly smell it. Try some seafoam at Advance Auto. Put a can in your gas tank when it's full. Or do the entire treatment, a can in the crank and put some in the brake booster.

oring is basically a washer to keep it sealed well.
w.o a good seal, the fuel sprays out/leaks out.

check your injectors to see if they're just stuck open..

Progress bump...

I am making progress, finally got new leads for my meter. Sears can be a bitch sometimes.

Well, at first I thought it could be the fuel injectors were stuck open because it was just dumping fuel in there like it was a penny a gallon. Well, I put a meter to the injectors, 14.25 volts!! I read that it should vary between 0-2 volts in the Haynes book. So I thought it could be the injector resistor. I check the ohms on it and 5.6 ohms, with in the 5-7 ohm spec.

I changed the O2 sensor on it. I was told that it could be the MAP sensor, intake temp sensor, 02 sensor(ruled out), spark plugs (I changed those also and they look like the old ones already, charred black), and I was even told that the piston rings were letting fuel into the crankcase. I really do doubt this because the compression would also be down and the car and motor has only 67k miles on it. I may do a compression test on it though.

I am really stumped on what it could be. Thanks for any input

OK screw this, double post it is because COmcast is sucking today...

How can you tell if your injectors are stuck open? Just by saying it is dumping fuel in there should not be a reason to just say they are stuck open. Just wondering.

If the oil smells like gas, the rings areleaking gas from the chamber into the oil.

Well, should the injectors be getting 14 volts? If they are they are wide open when they should be getting about 2 volts. If the injector resistor is shot, I'll make a new one from scratch, being an electronics engineering major helps :)

Then compression would be low and the car would be stumbling on idle?? It doesn't stumble on idle. And if that is the case I'll start ripping the motor out and install a new one in there.

yep, engine is getting tossed anyway. I guess I'll start tearing it down, I'm not concerned with it, atleast I got it running because it sat for 3 years :) I guess I'll start sourcing some B16s for it :)

you said your low impedance inj are reading high impedance (2 ohm vs. 14 ohm)? if you have high impedance inj w/ a resistorbox on an ecu that requires a much lower resistance you probably burnt the inj drivers out on the ecu causing it to do stupid stuff. if it's dumping excessive amounts of fuel it'll get into the oil w/o your rings being bad since it's washing the cylinders. if it runs at like 10:1 afr or richer for some time your oil will smell like gas.

It was 2 volts vs 14volts. It should be running a 9:1 or something like that.

check the map sensor, it will do this exact thing. it is near the intake manifold on the firewall, it WILL fuck your gas economy up if the vacuum line is disconnected from it for some reason, because it sees atmospheric pressure which = WOT to the computer. WOT = closed loop where it isnt reading the O2 sensor and such. check your vacuum lines and wiring to the map sensor.

I checked the voltage and vacuum lines going to the MAP sensor. Now I could not find any OE specs on the ohm loads for each terminal though.

I am getting 6.25k ohms on the yellow/red and green/white wires, 2.77k ohms on the green/white and white/red wires and across all three terminals (yellow/red and white/red wires) I am getting 3.4k ohms. It sounds like it is fucked because I am getting different readings across the whole sensor.

check the inj for ohms. check the map for voltage. get a pinout diagram of your ecu so you can pull the cover to check the map voltage or strip back some wire on the map sensor plug and check voltage. one wire will be ground, one will be 5v, and the other should be close to 3v key on engine off. make sure you keep the map sensor plugged in when doing this so you complete the circuit and see what the map is actually doing.

My problem.... I'm going to kill all the half-ass mechanics out there. I bet it probably damaged the fuel pump, fuel filter, and fuel injectors. It was screwed in the outlet side of the FPR.

That is my cat, he was helping also :)
