is the fi light on? or led indicator? if not pull the tail section and check the regulator assembly. check the connector to see if it is melted same thing happened to my 98 i had to correctly rewire the connection.

Either the stator or the regulator is likely dead. Start with checking the regulator like stated in the previous post.

Have you tried adjusting your idle?

Check your battery connections. Also, get a multimeter and post your voltage readings with the bike off, in run, and while attempting to start.

it idles fine when its running it just that it seems to be running directly off of the battery and killing it.

can i get a proper reading if the battery is really weak

Get a MM. Post your voltages. Or take it to a shop and spend some money to fix it.

Sounds like the voltage regulator to me too. Besides the regulator being bad, you've probably also blown a few fuses in it.

i checked all the fuses that i could find they were all still good. how much would the regulator run me

My guesstimation would be to check the stator. Good luck with it, buddy.

with the stator once it goes bad the bike shouldnt be able to start again?
i charged the battery a good bit yesterday and it started fine then i left if for a couple of hours and and it started fine again without the dash going dim
