Does that boat have Vtaaaak?

The Italian group, Wally Yachts, is about to do to motor yachts what it did to the sailing world several years ago. Following the incredible success of its radical sailing yachts, they plan to assault the motor market with two designs that look radical - even for James Bond movies!

The flagship is a 118 foot (35.6 m ) catering for up to 8 guests, and capable of traveling up to an incredible 70 knots, thanks to its gas turbine motors.

"The idea behind this project is to have a boat featuring all the spacious comforts of a mega yacht together with all the nautical characteristics of a coast-guard boat."

"While remaining comfortable on board our yacht you are capable of cruising at 60 knots not only in flat seas but also in rough waters," Luca Bassani, the president and founder of the company said.
Looking like a mixture of something from Star Wars and James Bond - the Wally 118

http://www.artec-machine.com/MAAG-gearboxes/marine/marine_applications/Power_Yachts/wally_power.jpgRather obviously, he added "we did not impose any constraints or limitations in designing this new product."

"The team work allowed for the technical solutions to blend with the styling solutions. The result is a yacht with unique and marked characteristics like the vertical bow, the air inlets, and the deck superstructure," Maurio Sculli, the naval architect at Wally yachts.

"In fact, the technical solutions, developed with no compromises contributed to the yacht's appeal, like the shape of the bow that allows for a 50 percent reduction of the vertical acceleration and the superstructure design that features flat surfaces in order to be transparent and to provide for automatic opening doors and windows reflecting the same functionality as the hull lines.

The main design and technical features are protected by an international patent, because the company thinks it is such a design leap.

Claudio Lazzarini and Carl Pickering are the architects responsible for the interior which they said "has no references in the nautical world."

Basically, the interior is totally open plan.

"The deck, cockpit, navigation and saloon areas have been conceived as one continuous element."

"Onto the landscape of teak planes, the crystal prism has been placed, and the space between contain various functions such as additional seating, tables, storage and technology."

"The saloon has been designed with the same relaxed life of the cockpit in mind. A sliding dining table allows 14 people to eat in a formal or relaxed atmosphere, while the navigation area is more similar to a flight deck than its usual nautical equivalent and can also be used as an office or dining area thanks to sliding tables," Carl Pickering said.

Inside the Wally 118

It is to be powered by a choice of motors , from 7,200 up to a massive 16,800 HP, linked to gas turbines (Rolls Royce or Detroit Diesel) and waterjets, which is expected to give a maximum speed of up to 70 knots and a "cruising" speed of 60 knots.

"This kind of power has been successfully applied for many years to commercial and navy vessels, because it is very reliable whilst requiring less maintenance than equivalent diesel powered engines," according to the company.

It will be built at the Intermarine yard in Italy because of its large engineering department, and background in advanced composites especially for high performance vessels with a priority in safety like navy minesweepers, and the high standard of the quality control for the navy requirements, according to Wally general manager Giorgio Magrini.

The company plans to launch 2 118's next year, and three per year after this.

And the price? Well, not surprisingly, they're not cheap.

It ranges from:

17.3 million Euros (approximately $US15.6 million, or £10.4 million);

14.9 million Euros ($US13.4 million or £8.95 million) for the intermediate, 50 knot option;

12.8 million Euros ($US11.5 million, or £7.7 million) for only 40 knots.
