the SR20 got scared and jumped out of the bay
http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/7669/emptybaygf4.jpg

getting this lump out of the truck wasn't so easy... had to build my custom engine hoisting teepee to get it from the truck to the ground, it was up too high for the real engine hoist. but it's on the ground now, safe and sound, ready to be prepped for entry into the big empty bay.

with some quick eyeballed measuring the LS1 is narrower than the SR with the turbo attached by about 3 inches and is longer than the SR/trans by about 2-3 inches, mostly due to how the accessories hang off the front of the engine so far.

one sweet item that came on my transmission.... factory Hurst short throw shifter :).

i'm doing the swap, hopefully with some help from Dan @ BG. waiting on the GTO oil pan and my clutch to show up before i can get started cutting the crossmember and making mounts. i was going to do the harness myself but i need this car done for the drift demo at Nopi Nats which only gives me a month, so i'll likely send it off to a company called Speartech who converts the stock LS1 harness for use in swap vehicles so i can concentrate on the really hard parts. mounting and exhaust will take a good bit of time to get right.

SR is still in great shape, just decided to switch to the LS1 because the low end power will help during the drift demos i'm doing and it'll have less tendency to get hot so i can keep the action going. the other benefit is potentially finding some sponsors since the car will stand out a little more.

all the major components are here, time to start building mounts :).

building my own. hinson's stuff doesn't fit the S13 well although they claim it to fit with stock hood and shit. all hinson really makes is spacers that move the subframe lower but that will screw with my lower control arms so i'm going all custom with completely solid mounts.

made a bit of progress today. finally got around to pulling the T56 off and found out it already has a decent clutch on it. still has a good bit of life in it, but i want to use my light flywheel and SPEC clutch i picked up so out it comes.
http://img224.imageshack.us/img224/7380/clutchru0.jpg

got the subframe hacked up nicely today, cut the stock mounting humps off and welded certain areas to keep them solid. i'll eventually plate over the parts i cut off but i want to get the motor over the subframe to see where the mounts line up and such. notched it between the rack mounts as well to clear the front portion of the oil pan.... need to see how much more i can notch out to let the motor sit down. my method for checking basic clearances was to bolt the oilpan to the bellhousing and start beating the shit out of the trans tunnel.

http://img241.imageshack.us/img241/9338/clearance1fe1.jpg
http://img241.imageshack.us/img241/7353/clearance2eq4.jpg

as you can see there was a little work with a hammer, and i'm sure more to come.

He's not looking for times...he's a drifter :) I could be wrong, but he does drift demo's with us at NOPI and it's hard to keep the tubo cars cool for 30 mins while we beat the hell out of them. Dand and I were tossing around this idea. It still may happen.

Funny i was thinking the same EXACT thing...Im almost sure the ls1 outweighs the sr20det by atleast 100lbs but being v8 you dont have to worry about hitting boost to get the tires spinning.....all that torque should do that for ya....

nice swap though...you should supercharge that beast.....:)

actually, most of the extra weight from the swap is in the T56 trans, not so much in the motor setup so the weight is down low in the middle of the car. the T56 is straight beefy compared to the nissan transmission. the SR with turbo setup and such probably only weighs slightly less than the LS1 alone, although i don't have any scales around that go that high to find out. my goal is to get the motor as low and far back as possible, within reason of course. started some mounts tonight in the short time i had to work on it, i'll get pictures up shortly.

as for the question about times, i'm not building it as a drag car but i'm sure it'll see the strip at some point.... should be a pretty quick car even with the stock LS1 in it.

HiPSI
08-22-2006, 12:13 AM
ok tonight's slight progress. got started on the engine mount locations for building my custom mounts. these are 1/4" steel plate, and will be gusseted on the bottom to resist flexing down from the weight.

http://img86.imageshack.us/img86/6483/1002626ek8.jpg

a shot of the subframe notch for oilpan clearance. i might need to take a little more out but i'm not messing with that until i see how far back the motor can really go before it hits everything.

http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/5937/1002628kd5.jpg

last thing i did tonight was install the new throwout bearing on the slave cylinder. i went to install it back onto the tranny and sure enough, one of the bolts stripped the hole so i need to drill/tap the hole one size larger. not a big deal, just didn't get around to it this evening. these GM slaves are pretty neat little setups and don't weigh anything compared to a standard slave/arm setup.

CodyW
08-22-2006, 12:53 AM
yea, for those wondering, the LS1/T56 is actually about 130 lbs lighter than a stock KA/auto tranny, and even though a SR/5-speed is also lighter than that, the weight won't be thrown off by much. this swap is gonna be straight up awesome, and i still wanna steal your car erin (after it's done of course) :).

picture of shifter alignment, the shifter will be close to centered in the stock hole but just about a half inch foreward. the cool thing about the T56 is that i can make my own shifter so i'll just make an S-bend shifter if the reach on it sucks.

still waiting on exhaust manifolds, harness to come back, mufflers, driveshaft and a few other bits to show up. all are on order and should be here within the week (other than the harness). i need to climb under the dash and connect the wilwood clutch master to the pedal asssembly and start putting that back together with the new cluster while i wait for other parts.

yes it will. i will be upgrading the diff later but it's not like i'm launching the car on drag slicks... it's a drift car. either way, the stock nissan R200 is a tough setup, i'd surely break an axle before the diff.

no, i built custom mounts and did the subframe work myself. the only thing i was relying on hinson for was the harness work, which i'm now kicking myself in the ass for since time is everything to me right now and he's 2 days over his stated delivery date.

small update:

manifolds and radiator have finally shown up, but the wiring harness won't be back until next week from Hinson. so far they are 0 for 2 with me on parts :(. if he'd kept up his end of the deal i'd have the car running by this weekend and actually have time to shake the car down and break in the clutch (and learn the car)... now i'll be lucky to have the thing running by Nopi let alone broken in.

I had heard that Hinson was slow on getting things back to you. Hopefully you have what you need by now.

Just spoke to him.. Still no harness :( :(

Hinson has fucked me over terribly. i'm scrambling to find another harness though as the car is pretty much ready to run otherwise :(

he will undoubtedly blame it on the shipping service, but i don't believe it was ever shipped at all.

thanks man. it ran great until today, the oil pump gave up on life and i believe i spun a rod bearing :(. guess that means it's time to throw in a higher volume pump, cam, and some better valvetrain and run up the rev limiter ;).

tore it down most of the way and pulled off the rod caps. spun 3 rod bearings on cylinders 1/4/6, with 6 being the worst by far. 1 and 4 were still together, just spun around inside the rod end. #6 is straight trashed

Holy hell man... It's time to make that engine a beast then...
How many miles come on that engine when you bought it?
I come close to throwing a 302 in a rx7 a few years ago.. but found out how expensive it is.. Kudo's on the swap!

it's a 50k motorset. the cylinders still have crosshatching in them so it's not worn that bad.

crank has minor scuffs. the pic is #6 with the bearing still on there. i had to pop it off with a couple screwdrivers. i believe the crank can be polished/cut a little and it should be fine. i'll just have to source some oversized bearings for it. i popped all of the main caps off today and they all look ok, a little debris in there from being spread around but no scuffing on the crank.
