it's 4:20am and i survived yet another night of La Vaca. Last time i was there it was a BET event and that was kinda....wouldn't say ackward exactly...definitely a...good time...but don't know what was worse, being the ONLY white person in the entire club or having 3 chicks give me a complete physical...they didn't even bother telling me to turn my head and cough, how dare them  and then they go  yesh ladies, you'll need 3 hands

oh yeah, bad things happen on mtn runs i don't organize...i'm gonna try to make it though but i don't know...other priorities like sleep and :la: and :hump: may take precedence over burning fuel and tires :dunno: good night.

JennB

You do know what La Vaca means, right? That explains the lack of little hotties. ha.

Y'all better be awake cause I am and I really don't like being awake right now. I'm on my way.... hope is doesn't take me too long to get all the way up there.

yay! I just got out of the shower so I'm gonna get dressed and head on up. I'm coming from Buckhead so it may take me a little while. Not gonna eat before I leave though so food sounds fabulous!

I'm ready to drive! Woo hoo!

Need to stop for gas and check the tires before we all roll out though.

Might be a while on the video...there is a lot of footage and most of it was terrible. I need to devise some form of vibration insulation mount as the footage from the mount was annoyingly shaky. Either that, or I need a cameraman. The last bit wasn't too bad and I will get it up, but will be a few days at the least as I won't have a whole lot of extra time this week. Either way, I had a great time and hope to see you guys out again.

I can't wait to see the pics... they are gonna be great.

No videos of the dirfit MINI  I am so over-analytical of my own driving... jeez... such a girl. I'm wondering if its too much rear sway or if I am setting up wide turns wrong cause I had no problems in the really tight ones, which are what I'm far more used too. Who wants to drive the MINI and tell me if its the car or if I need to work on those wide turns? Tips and pointers gladly accepted :goodjob:

Actually, Jenn after being behind you and seeing the footage, I was really impressed with your driving. For a beginner that hasn't had a whole lot of seat time in your car, you are doing very well. That being said, I would be more than happy to drive the mini anytime, or sit shotgun and give constructive advice...

Yeah, I can do the same. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE come to the October Drivers School at Road Atlanta. It is soo well worth it. Not sure if you've ever done a DE before, but trust me, you will not be dissappointed. The instructors are great, and can help you with whatever you want to learn, and can work at your pace throughout the weekend.

But, in the meantime, I would say try re-setting that swaybar, and go driving and see what happens.

I PM's you about your rear sway, I have an even better idea. Let us know what tools are needed to adjust the links, and somebody can probably just bring them to one of the Northpoint meets I suggested you start comming to:yes:, and I'm sure we can do it right there. Couldn't take more than 20 minutes I'm sure.

EDIT: If you want proper drift training, though, just ask mike, he's the group pro-drifter :ninja:. He prolly lives closer than most any of us either, I'm up at exit 7a off 400. A ways from Buckhead

I'll give you drifting advice for a mini... dont try! lol.

Why not? A little casual, personal drifting can never hurt. Not saying try to compete or anything, but it's nice to klnow how to drift your own car, and to bring it back in line when you don't mean it, lol.

JennB
08-06-2006, 09:35 PM
Nooooooooooooo, I never would drift my car... it's a joke. My back end was getting lose in certain turns and I was very unhappy about it. I want my car flat and in a nice line going forward, not sideways. Not that I have anything against other people drifitng, it's fun as hell to watch but that is not what my car is made for.

Oh... and thanks for the compliment on the driving. I wouldn't call myself a beginner by any means, I've had a license for 10 years now but this particular car is only 8 months old and I've never had any real training. My 04 MINI (current MINI is an 06) was a lot easier to control because it had less power and well, I was driving in Indiana and if you've ever been there well... yeah. My previous cars certainly saw a lot of my crazy driving but were stock... poor college student and all that. I think I need some practice, pointers and maybe a little more camber and I should be good. Knowing my perfectionist ways, I'll never be 100% happy with my skills though. :lmfao: I'll have to head back up for some ride alongs sometime soon though for sure. I'm quite anxious to learn and impove :goodjob:

Oh, stop, a little drift when nobody's looking isn't a BAD thing :goodjob:

But I hear ya, I like a very neutral car too when I'm driving hard, but I like throttle oversteer on demand sometimes as well, lol.

Jenn, the two times I saw you oversteer more than you would want:
1st time - exit of decreasing radious realitivly flat, likly at 100% thorottle. This to me is where i would expect understeer, not oversteer.

2nd time- entering a decreasing radius, uphill. likly trailbraking, which is a great setup for oversteer (like you did).

Now, did u have any understeer problems on any of the turns? I was definatly right on ur ass both of those turns, and i didnt feel like i was pushing it, so im gonna lean towards, you had very few if any understeer problems and that in fact it could be you suspension setup to oversteer a little (sway bar, good place to start)... anywho, nice driving ;)

I would imagine the tires used on this type of driving would be a disadvantage too. Hey Jenn, what PSI were you running in the tires...was it the same for front and rear?

We checked it on of the the stops and I think it was about 30. I usually keep it higher than that though.

What should I do to correct these mistakes?

I didn't feel any understeer at all.

What should I do to correct these things?

I didn't feel any understeer at all. When i was running 17's with kumhos, both 711's and 712's, i would have to countersteer going into turns with all 4 sliding but it would usually even out around the apex...just enough for it to step back out exiting the turn. It was really rough before the LSD because i'd have to feather the throttle and still normally light up the inside tire trying to pull it straight out of the turn.

My suggestion would be play with tires and tire pressures and i know you hate to hear it but maybe use a less aggresive rear sway....you upgraded it didn't you? That will make it a little more predictable. Other than that just keep getting more seat time and get accustomed to it. Your car and it's suspension setup up is really stiff and it's behavior is to be expected...

What should I do to correct these things?

I didn't feel any understeer at all.

I mean you feel its truly the suspension setup wrong, then change it. Sounds like u upgraged the rear anti-sway bar since last time you drove it hard. Obviously if that is true, i would start there ;)

Yeah, it is an amazingly stiff car. My sway bar is a HSport 25.5mm hollow comp bar set on the middle setting, I can move it down to the softer setting, with a little help of course. They don't like me messing with my car in the parking lot.

This same bar was on my 04 as well and in the year or so I had that car, it never once got away from me in any way.

I do have LSD as well, which my 04 did not have.

I'm really curious if it's the suspension or if it's me. I haven't had any real training so I want to know if I'm doing something wrong.

Nope. It's been on the middle on both cars.

Lowering springs on the 06, stock on the 04. 06 has a 1'3" drop on progressive rate springs.

I don't think it's you at all. That all being said, it's not necessarily a bad thing either. The rear is going to slide as you become a better driver and push your car harder and the stiff rear suspension makes it more likely. Before suspension upgrades on the retta, it was very rare to have the rear slide because I couldn't push as hard in the corners. The car understeered quite a bit and gave up well before the rear would slide. Now that I have a much better suspension, my rear slides quite a bit, but predictably so. As I continue to push harder, the rear will go farther out, but that doesn't concern me terribly. The trick is to get comfortable with it and anticipate it. With that comes more control and confidence.

Jenn, I meant to tell you but I think you have more negative camber on your drivers side rear than on your pass side rear! To tell the truth your pass side rear looked pretty neutral. It might have been because I was behind you on the drivers side and couldn't see the angle on the pass side but I was sure I checked when we were cruising back 400 south.

When you were driving in the Mtn's did you notice you got loose more going around left hand turns than right? If so, then that was definately a factor. If your pass side was at a smaller neg or 0 camber with that sway back there then that accounts for you sliding out on that side. I know for sure the two times I saw you get loose were on sharp highspeed left turns.

JennB
08-07-2006, 11:48 AM
Yep, left turns were what got the car loose. Wide left turns.

Yep, left turns were what got the car loose. Wide left turns. That's kinda normal, left turns are always a little longer and normally flatter. Looking through my pics your driver's side rear definitely has quite a bit of camber but don't have any good shots of the passenger side to compare it to...

He is referring to the fact that left turns are on the outside of the turn and right turns are on the inside...at least on two way roads here in the US.

damn... im away from a computer for 24hrs and this shit gets to page 5?!?! oh well.. sucks not having a computer at home.

BTW.. my car died on me lastnight.. well, not dead, but something is telling the computer to leave the injectors wide open and open the idle air control valve open al lthe time :( It happened in the blink of an eye. I was leaving WaHo up here, ran fine.. came to a stop light and it just went all crazy on me when i put the car in 2nd.... started revving and flooding under throttle.... fuck.. this sucks. I bet its something simple too... i spent most the day lookign over all the wiring everywhere and can't find anything.

Jenn- dont worry, i know better then to want to take the MINI for some drifting :D But if you'd like, i'll drive the car for you (not wrecklessly) and give you my input on the feeling of the suspension setup.

Ouch, that sucks about the car man. How's the oil smell, is it fuel-loggd? Might possibly be, your running incredibly rich. ANy clue's at all as to what is wrong? electrical, fuel, or mechanical?

Jenn, I'd take Mike up on his offer to drive your car. He's sponsor'd, he's a pro drifter, and you know him now, so it's fairly safe to assume he knows whats going on with suspension, and how to feel a car out thoroughly.

Having someone else set up your suspension doesnt help alot, everyone likes their car to handle differently

I know, but I would like for someone to look at it and tell me what is causing the problems I'm having and help me tweak it to where I need it to be. Watch how I drive and see what is happening and help me make the right changes. :goodjob:

Besides, it's a reason to get out and drive and have some fun!

Well it was fine before :taun: I've taken the car on those exact same roads before and to the dragon a few times and it was as neutral as could be.

It has to be something that has changed recently like my alignment. I usually run with a lot more camber in the rear but was tired of destroying tires. Maybe the softer setting in the rear sway can do the trick... I'll figure something out and it may have to come see you guys.:bump:

anytime you feel like cruising up and down the mtn.. Myself, green91 (chris), efman live in dahlonega and I live on the mountain. Jason of course used to live up here so he knows the mtn. as well.. (just dont ask him to chase a ford ranger down the big hill!!!!!)

As far as the rear stepping out.. how hard of braking were you doing going in the turns?? Any trailbraking? I spent a few minutes on some mini forums researching your problem and almost everyone is saying to run the softer setting on the sway...

Hope all ends out well!

It's called braking before a turn, pre-selecting your exit gear, and powering out from the apex. Not everybody is good enough to trail brake into a corner.

uhhh... Nice try, but owned is when someone makes a counterpoint that prooves the original poster to be either wrong and/or just shy of a valid point. In this particular instance Kendogg would have had to make a driving susgestion that would proove trailbraking to be the slower method of attacking a corner. BUT, Kendogg did not accomplish this, he did in fact make a point, but it was a tactic that is slower (which kendogg also agrees to because he said the driver must be better to trailbrake; better = faster is a safe assumtion imo). Now, however valid Kendoggs point is.. it sure doesnt deserve a "owned" post that wastes bandwidth.

I brake before a turn, not while in it. I just don't have the skills to brake in a turn without my antilock going nuts so I don't do it.
