Some say yes, some say no. It depends what you are looking for. From the factory it is:

- Faster then any other GTI engine trim (in STOCK FORM)
- Comes with a nice looking FULL body kit
- 18'' OZs stock as well as sport suspension (Eibach i believe)
- Konig Racing Seats
- Various other aspects making it an all around sportier car

They were $30k new so compared to a regular 1.8T or VR6 you couldnt really buy a car and mod it to R32 status for the same price.

From a speed aspect, ive never driven one. I know they are pretty fast, but i believe they can be beat by a 1.8T with some bolt ons.

Personally i LOVE the R32s, beautiful cars and if you have the cash FI on an R32 is FAST.

Anyway thats my opinion...

Ok let me answer your question....

R32 in stock form will dyno roughly (200+whp/200+lbs)

1.8t in stock forum will dyno roughly (150-170whp, 160-180lbs)

stock form R32 is faster, but after minor bolt on's the 1.8t will rape a R32. You can't compete w/ the Boost. Now if you spend the money to do a SC or Turbo kit on the R32 you can easily make over 300whp, but then again your talking lots of $$ in mods.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

The R32 is a very underrated car... it was built as the top of the line compact N/A dub. You are buying the perfect mountain/track car. From the factory its built to tear up the roads; it is not setup for straight line. (hence a modded 1.8t will kill it in a straight line) but you are getting both luxury and performance.

Now my suggestion... if your looking to go FAST and that is number one priority i would suggest just buying a 1.8t. for under 2000$ you can have a 13'sec car making roughly 220+whp/280+lbs. if you can find a 20th edition or a gli you will get the luxury + the performance from the turbo. plus you will save money b/c 1.8t are going cheap :goodjob:

-----------------------------------------------------------------

conclusion: R32: luxury twisty built N/A dub but can be on the pricy side

plug: if your looking for a dub already built i'm getting ready to sell my 4dr 1.8t very soon. http://forums.importatlanta.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

1.8T engines require timing belts every 60k(I work for VW/Audi Service), suffer from sludge issues more then any other brand turbo engine. (Incorrect Oil Volume by design) If tuned you'll be lucky to run it up to 100k miles. With tuning you then have more power that once introduced to the front wheels means low traction...everything has to be planned ...when and where the boost is...

The VR6 is bullit proof and even with boost will run over 200k with no bottom end issues! My last supercharged VR GTI ran to 140k from new for me and then I sold it for 8grand and she is still running strong! There is no way I'm losing 40 hp in the drivetrain, last dyno of my R was 234hp at the wheels. I now have an open exhaust and a turbo will be next! I used to sell VW's and most would end up buying the 1.8T due to pricepoint. Yes you can get bigger HP numbers but FI vs NA is a stupid comparison. I like linear controlled power so I always start with NA engines. The actual Torque band is much more fun in the R then in the 1.8T...it's location on the rpm range suits around town and highway passing dominance/fun. Let's not forget the VR6 makes a special exhaust sound that is very exotic.

VW is the only manufacturer to currently mass produce a narrow angle V configured engine that has staggered cylinder layout with a single head design.(but they are not the first though) Lastly, the R32 is not produced anymore, 1 year run!!!! So you won't run into to many folks that have them until the next version comes out...which will also be a limited run. My sticker was 29,890 and I paid 26,400 and now it's worth 25k or so...got to love it! Buy the R, leave the 1.8T alone...or get the 2.0T which improved on all the mishaps in design that exist with the 1.8T

that is correct! have beatn 3 r32s from a 15-20 roll and 1 r32 from a dig. But if you have the cash, me personally would get the R32. All around its better, awd, luxury/sporty interior, sound damn gorgeus on the road, ect ect.

^ Here you go... i've seen a few dyno and they weren't that impressive. Its pretty common for NA cars to loose quite a bit, just depends when they roll out of the factory :goodjob:

i've raped quite a few r32, not knocking them but as stated you can't touch 1.8t until you go FI. but if i was going to buy either it would be r32 they are absolutely beautiful.

I raced a couple of r32's. I pulled on both, instantly. By like 2+ cars.. I don't think they were modded because it was to easy.

On the other hand, They look sexy as fuck :goodjob:

if you wanna go fast on the highway get a 1.8t and mod it. from light to light and track r32 will rape a mkiv. i got to drive a super charged one last week and its balls fast. it only gets me by 1/2-1 car highway, but from a dig that thing moves! like 3-5 cars.

Point being that the claimed 200 whp is wrong or the this dyno is wrong!! I've gotten pulled on but never raped!! If you running APR stage 3 I can see that, but not a 1.8T with just standard bolt ons...maybe just pulled on. I've been raped by a Ferrari, AMG Mercedes, and Tuned M5....and didn't mind that considering how light those guys pockets are now...I blew out a 1.8T top end at about 158 mph...I was surprised at that. (closed course ;) ) Of course My original point still stands...get a VR and plan to drive it for 200k miles! Now let's see some 1.8T dynos from those who have raped Rs...just so we can decided if there is a bit of exaggeration. Now picture below with another 100HP, yes I do need FI, low easy boost of course. :tongue1:

^ lol no doubt 1.8t FTW!!! :D

i don't think anyone is doubting the performance of the R32, but for $ to $ you can build a 1.8t to beat a R32 for under 2g's. R32 will then have to buy a nice shot of nitrous or FI to beat the 1.8t.
