View Full Version : Got pulled over for Exhaust Noise? WTF
Does anyone know the laws/rules on exhaust noise here in georgia?
The other day i was driving as a cop passes me, i see him turn around. He comes back behind me, then we pass a state trooper or something and he follows me too. They both pull me over. The first cop asks me if i live on blah blah road, which i do, so i say yeah. He pulls out a printed letter with the description of my car in it saying that people/person have called in complaints about my exhaust being too loud. First of all I work nights so i leave for work at 11pmish and return at 6:30amish... He tells me my exhaust is illegal by state code so I asked him how it was illegal? He returned by stating that he could just give me a verbal warning or he could write it down for me... I opted for verbal warning and to shut the fuck up until i knew the laws...
So, my exhaust is sorta loud, it's not a ricer nasty loud but a deep rumble loud, kinda like a GT rumble... Imagine a gt with flows on it... WTF?? Can anyone point me to the state code where it states these laws or something? I wana shove it back int he cops face next time and tell him to eat it...

I think it has to do with the db level.. I forget the GA CODE for it.. I think you can have an exhaust, but it has to top at some db

Yeah, I got pulled over on barrett about a month ago for a noise violation. He said my exhaust was illegal. When I asked him what was considered legal, he told me any modification to the exhaust. That would have been cool cause he was just giving me a verbal warning, but then he said he was tired of all the ricers hanging out at barrett on the weekends. He actually called me a ricer. Fuck cops.

You know he just cant do that. In Cali they have to put a device and test your exhaust. Anything over 96DB is considered illegal. Just goto court and prove that your exhaust is legal and everything.

They make you rev your car like around 3-4k and see how loud it is. I was reading about a kid who got pulled over in Cali since he had a Greddy SP and they put noise violation too loud. So he asked the magazine what he should and told him to go to the company and get a like a letter complying it was under 96db and then he told the judge that their was no kind of sound test done. He got away scotts free.

He pulled out a u turn and followe me for at least a mile before pulling me over. My exhaust is not that loud, it has a cat, plenty of other cars around that are much louder. He just wanted to pick on me I guess. By the way his job is to protect and serve. My exhaust wont hurt anybody.

here's the deal, as long as it's a complete exhaust (not like mine that ends behind the resonator 2 feet in front of the rear wheels  ) it is legal. It is illegal to sell an exhaust that is too loud, but there is no law on using it other than the local city ordinances of noise violations. There is no required maximum decibal output and if there was police don't even carry sound meters in this state so it wouldn't matter. Don't worry about it as long as you're not carrying anything and have a license and insurance.
As for the letter, did it have your address printed on it? when did they give it to you? after they took your license from you?

No. What it means is that there is no exact db level specified, in that section at least. And i can tell you from experience that you definitely DO have to have a catalytic converter on your car. I have been pulled over for excessive noise twice in paulding county. One time the cop actually looked under the car for the cat. I asked him what was considered legal, and he told me that you must have a cat and a muffler. If you have that then it is legal. He let me go with minimal hassle. Keep in mind this just what this specific cop told me so it may or may not be true. The other time i got pulled over I was let go with nothing also.
Whats really funny is that my cat is a dummy... its a 2.5 inlet and outlet high flow cat that i cut the shell off of, gutted out, welded in a straight pipe throught the middle, and welded it back together. Works like a charm.

And yes, as someone pointed it out to me, my neighbor does have it out for me. Its an older couple with no kids. The first day I moved into the house, I had my integra parked in the center of the culdesac since the uhaul took up the whole driveway. Cars could EASILY go around my integra and it was not in the way. I was next to my car for a moment when the lady walked directly up to me, the first thing she said was "You don't plan to continue parking your car here do you? You'd better not. I've lived here for blah blah blah blah..." She didn't even bother to introduce herself. I have never spoken to her since. She calls the cops EVERY time i have people over.
