For all you guys wanting to run big turbos on small engines, heres proof that bigger is not ALWAYS better.
This is a customers car we built, i wont release his name , if he wants to speak up he can.
GSR Block
81.5mm
CP Pistons 9.7:1 compression
Eagle Rods
ACL Race Bearings
ARP Headstuds
GT28 (NOT DISCO POTATO) Turbo Kit
MSPi Front Mount Intercooler
500cc injectors
Crome Engine Management
Now the motor didnt HAVE to be built, but the customer wanted extra assurance, and he might go bigger later on so he got it done up front. This is a tiny Ball Bearing turbo so it spools quick an holds throughout the powerband.
Here is his graph (red) vs my 2.0l LSVTEC NA motor

You can see where he KILLS me, he makes an INSTANT 200ft/lbs of TQ an carries it out all the way almost till redline. This car has springs and ret so he can rev it to 9500 if he wishes.
Proof that a big turbo isnt needed to have a fun car. If he rolled up on ILOVEBOOST on the street, daniel would be in for a good run due to this cars instant powerband.

Nice, what boost level is that at? Alot of sr and ka guys push well into 300whp with a gt28r.. and that build could easily hold more power than that.

10 psi is where we stopped with it, that turbo is pretty much maxxed out , it might make 260, but its the real small GT28

oh ok gotcha. i thought it was the gt28r but i believe there is a smaller one also..

damn!! thats not bad for only 10 psi. That dyno is Wheel horsepower right? If so, what do you think it would make to the crank? (dont feel like finding the formula for drrivetrain losses)

so how much would a setup like this cost, assuming i just brought in a stock engine?

its not cheap, like i said you dont have to BUILD the motor.
you can make 250-280whp all day long on a stock motor if properly tuned an maintained.
You could do the same power with one of our bolt on turbo kits which runs $3500.
a built motor ups the price obviously

how would you quote only13% power lose? just A question.
i thought it ranged form 10 to 20 % in some cases .

Generally RWD cars lose more thru the drivetrain than FWD cars.
RWD cars lose 20-25% thru the drivetrain.
FWD cars lose about 10-15%.

He'd put up a good fight until I hit VTEC!
Oh wait...

LOL you know hwat i mean, youd destroy him after 6000 rpms, but, he would make you think twice for a couple seconds, hed pull you until you hit full boost

ummmm...my guess is he has something to do with a lizard.
Looking at the graph he really wouldn't benefit much by revving any further unless he has really long gears and would lose a bunch of revs when shifting. That is a neat little turbo build. With a Disco Potato he would really have a nice quick spooling little street machine. That's interesting to see it overlayed with your NA build. That peak torque at 4200 is a bit surprising and quite impressive. Nice setup for sure, now put a bigger turbo on it! :D
4th or 3rd gear pull on that dyno?

it's my car (at least it looks like it, lol), a 4dr gsr, first turbo build...and it's crazy to drive :D. soon as you get on it, even a little bit, it starts to pull. then again i don't exactly have much experience driving turboed cars, lol. just a couple little issues to work out with my faulty map sensor and i'm good to go.
this is my daily driver, so i just wanted some extra power that i could use for every day driving on the streets and the highway. i had my eye on the smaller ball-bearing turbos since they spool so quickly...
i was really shooting for 300whp, and the motor had almost 200k miles on it, so i figured might as well build it before boosting it. and 300whp on a built motor should be plenty reliable. i fell kinda short though...you can see on the graph that the turbo starts to run out of breath as it gets close to redline. i think with a better manifold and maybe a disco potato or a gt2871...i should get there and still have close to the same response...what do yall think???
anyways props to the mainstream crew for doing a great job...that's the only shop that'll touch my car as long as i'm anywhere close to atl...

Trini GSR, lets run :). I'm slow, trust me. For fun though.

once i finish breaking it in...no problem. be good to see what she can do...although you'll prolly beat me anyways, cuz i don't know how to drive :D

Me neither, thats common in "JDM drivers" + I make alot less WHP

VTEC so where is this guys spool at what RPM alsooo How much is your installation if I get everything

lol, there is a graph of the dyno at the top showing the answer to every question you asked and there is a thread in the Sponsors Corner section that has a price list for Mainstream's turbo kits and applications. :police: It's always a good idea to look and see if the answer to your question already exists before asking it.

I went for a "test" ride with charles to make sure everything was running properly and that car is a blast to ride in, cruise in 2nd and just lay into it and it makes the low end torque to go.

why would you put a small turbo on a fully built engine ? ... waste of money for the turbo maybe ...

yes I did. But I'd build an engine up when I decide to "go bigger," not before that ..
so as I said earlier - waste of money at this time (either for the turbo, or for the engine build)

glad you feel that way.
hes got a 600whp motor that makes 250whp, he can beat on it all day long an never break.

well when your motor has almost 200,000 miles on it, and leaks oil...common sense says rebuild it before boosting it. and if you're going to rebuild your motor anyhow (and have to pay for machine work, etc), it makes sense to do it with forged internals the FIRST time, rather than OEM parts. especially if you plan to daily drive it.
better to spend the extra $500 on forged internals up front and have a little security/reliability, than waste more money and time to rebuild it a SECOND time when i decide to go bigger in the future. it's not like i spent $2000 to sleeve the block...
as far as the turbo size...mang i said i was building a fast daily driven STREET car. not a trailer queen or a track car. what good is 600whp gonna really do me from stop light to stop light on a boosted FWD car?
i admit tho, i was shooting for 300whp...if i didnt get the gt28r for dirt cheap, i'd have probably went a little bigger for sure. and in the future i plan to. but i'm new to the turbo game...so cut me some slack :D

I saw the high millage but didn't see that it was leaking oil. In that case I understand your investment.
Many people do turbo setups on high millage motors :)

Lol so a leak is all it takes to convince you to rebuild an engine??
...Well either that or you realized you were wrong.

leaking / burning oil is no good. It will cause bigger problems in the near future.
There are plenty high millage Honda engines that are running strong, but looks like his wasn't in that good shape.
so yes, depending on the oil loses I'd go for a rebuild as well.
