The thread about racing at AMS reminded me of a story that the man I got my car from told me. He's a priest and was working at a church out in El Paso, TX and said that on friday and saturday nights they would shut down one of the airstrips at the local airport and let people have street drags there.
http://padrenet.com/racing/videos/ep1_0006.wmv Here's a vid of him running his new GTO down there.
It would be pretty nice if we could set something like that up up here. If anybody has any airport hookups at a small municipal airport speak up.

an airport owner would be a fool to open himself up to so much liability

Not if it's a municipal airport. No air traffic at night, 5 or $10 a head = revenue. He couldn't lose.

just wait till his insurance company finds out he allows cars to race. or wait till someone wrecks, gets run over, etc. way too much liability. with as many people as in that video you are open for fights, drug dealing, etc. if it was like 20-30 IA people that come.. maybe not.. but over1000 people like in that video it would be crazy

no way in hell would it happen, not unless it was a SHUT down air field. like jason said, the LEGALITY issues you have to have to be able to legally race are expensive.
you still must abide by county rules. Im not saying it doesnt happen OCCASIONALLY.

Well, w/ Summitt here it is just a matter of time before a SMART county builds a strip. Street racing is gonna get worse and worse until they give us an avenue.
I know they do this on a military base somewhere but I cannot remember exactly where, I'll try and search for it

It's private property just like Turner Field. He could just require ya'll to carry your own insurance. Let me know if you work things out. I can work out liability insurance and possibly sanction it as an event.

Couldn't they sign a waiver to protect themselves? There's an airport near me, but the owner probably wouldn't allow racing there.

with the way the airports need to have the strips and taxi areas secured it'll be no way of happening. the only way it'll ever happen is if it's a private strip, not municipal.

theres a link with all of the airports in GA, public and private.

This is a link to abandoned air fields and the stone mountain one looks like it "might" be a good location. It WAS a runway, then turned into a parking lot for the olympics, and never turned it back into a runway. Now it has a newly paved section and I guess they fly radio controled planes there.

Why would you want to do that on a runway? There's no way you'd have enough room on 99% of them....
Robbins AFB has the longest in the state and its only 12,000 ft long (2.2miles).....most private runways aren't over 6000ft....most cars take more than a mile to max out unless they've been geared pretty damn low or have a hell of alot of HP

Well that means I obviously "have a hell of alot of HP" + low gearing  . JK; my topspeed isn't that high, I've hit 13x before & it seemed like it got there pretty quick but yea your probably right 2 miles might not be enough for my slow car ..

Hmm. I wonder if they would let us have it on military gorund, seing as it on fort gillem. The military is not to keen on letting a whole bunch of people just parade around on their property. Anyone else want to really give this a shot? I would need all the specifics taken care of. Like when, how many people, inurance, safety, ect.
ill answer that one HELL NO im stationed at fort manc and let me be the first to tell you it wont happen theres couple of GEnerals Tampons that need to be changed before that happens.

Camp Hill, AL has a old airfield that was turned into a 1/8th mile strip. It's not what you would expect though.

Don't forget...you gotsta have room to stop too :nx: lol I ran my car at one of my undisclosed test tracks and 0-top speed and back to 0 probably took a bit over 2 miles...problem is, the first mile takes forever, the second one gets covered pretty damn quick ;)

Here in dahlonega we have "Wimpy International" Its 6100 ft in length. The county owns it, but I know the people who run it. I doubt he will let us hold an event there. I will call him tomorrow though and just see. Our county is all about making some money and are somewhat pro-active with the youth!

I called the county and spoke with one of the ladies there. She told me to call like 15 different people. Finally got in touch with someone who knew what was up, and they said that it would not be possible. I figured I would try. At first they tried to say that if someone got hurt then they would be held resposible and I said well if someone falls in one of your hangers you arent responsible are you? She said that each of the private planes carries there own insurance. I said well if we do a waiver that claims each person is responsible then why could we not use it like one weekend a month. I mentioned I was a taxpayer who would like to use a piece of gov't property that was public use. She said that she personally didnt mind (Went on a long bulls*&% story of her son getting busted at MOG for street racing). I tried to get her on my side but to much adeau - its a no go!

they have speed trials at the maxton airport in north carolina. they use a 2 mile runaway and the other 2 runaways at the airport are still active.
