Ok here it goes.

For those who know me, Know Ive been judging for about 6 to 7 years and showed a 98 honda civic hatch back for about the same time.
I was trained by the best in the Game, Pablo , Ray Brooks, John Marsh, Greg Chupp and a few others.
I averaged about 40 t0 50 shows per year up and down the east coast.
I think I was personally really succesful with it.. Granted It was never the hottest Civic out there but It received alot of recognition at major shows.
Awards, TV show, Magazine, Sponsors and catalogs etc etc etc... And was in 2 of the hottest car clubs in GA , Perfected Images and The International Allstars.
At the show I over heard someone say something Like.. "I bet that mofo doesnt even have a hooked up car".. I kinda just blew it off and really have no idea what he drove or even if this cat had a car there.. Maybe he was upset The way I judge his car or something, Honestly, I wish I could remember who it was..

Tips :

I like to give advice, Dont think Im a snob or a MR. Know it all.
If you just started showing or something, take a good look.. I mean, take a good look at the cars built by teams such as ELITE, ALL STARS and ECI.
I think they are the cream of the crop.

1- CLEAN : I understand if you drive your whip everyday, YOU ARE AT A CAR SHOW.. you are showing of your car.. I mean, when you about to bang a chick are your balls dirty and shit ?

2 - MODS : you can have 500 mods, It dont matter, QUALITY over QUANTITY. No questions asked. Seriously, take a good look at the job done, does your kit fit? does the paint look FRESH at all times? Is the Fiberglass work on your car EVEN and DOES it flow? Are your wheels clean inside and out? Wiring ? can you hide it please? Clean intearior? Does your interior match?

3 - BRANDS : I typically dont really care about this, we all started somewhere.. But please, if you already are using a Cheap as brand, atleast make it look good, It may be imposible, but atleast show you tried.

4- PURSES AND OTHER MISC SHIT : Please remove the crap out of the car, It does not look good in there and it doesnt make car judges happy.

5 - I.C.E ( noobz: In car entertainment ) : We know you have spend some cash on your dope system and TV's and shit, Keep the music low and if you are going to play a movie, please keep the F&F shit at home. Play some porn or chuck norris movie or something diffrent.

6- JUDGING SHEET : Please do not ask for the Scoring sheet, You already saw it. The show Staff does not have to give it to you.
You didnt place? Take a look around you and seriously anaylize why you didnt place.

7 - CAR PRESENTATION : I know we have tons of mods on our cars, believe me when I say this, 95 % of IA events we will allow a small presentation of your vehicle.. certains things we dont see and if you point them out we will look for them and it will help your score extra. Now, PLease dont act like you dont know what the Fuc* you have done.. I can see you only have 5 mods, dont add shit you dont have. Ive seen cats with 100's of mods and they knock that shit out in about 2 minutes. Most of the time, I tell people " YOU GOT 2 MINUTES " please do not get offended.. You must be prepared.. YOU KNOW YOUR RIDE way better then anyone at the event. Another tip is : Have a list or something. And dont tell me, I have internal work done, I cant obviously see it under all the wire loom and I can def tell your are lying. And If im wrong, Shit a judge cant, more then likely wont get your points.
And Never mentioned mods you are getting next week, Judges dont care about that. We are JUDGING NOW, not next week.

8 - AWARDS : Why people always ask me " WHEN ARE AWRDS ".. Ok, you should already know what time the show starts and ends, you are here, you saw info somewhere , so you should know.. But when it comes to awards time you are dragging to get your ass to the award ceremony.

9- TROPHIES : whats the point of having 30 of these in front of your car? Judges dont look at these and wont give you extra points, they know when a car is hot shit and is capable of winning at every show. Even if you have a Display of your car, they still look gay, keep them at home.
Plus, they might scratch your interior driving all that hardware to an event.

10- ENDING : When the show is over, Do not come and ask the staff weird questions.. We know all these stuff and can tell you are upset because you lost. Wait until the next day, contact the staff or call them and find out what happened, Believe me, they wont mind telling you why decisions were made. You look like a total assclown in front of everyone.

11- TRASH : We know who park where, Please pick up your trash!! ASSHOLES.

12 - GOING HOME : Take it easy, is been a long day, Please remember that about 95 % of the time the POPO will be around the area waiting to catch the F&F wannabees. Relax.

Peace.

Tell me about it. I learned that from the ALL STARS man.. gotta be on point.
My biggest challenge was ESPN 2.. camera and weird looking dude with all the make up all up in your face... hahahahahha
If you want one of the best to show you how to give a presentation if you are really serious, ask Greg Chupp shit, simply just watch him ,.. dude is a bibble when it comes down to it.

it gives me a new understanding to people who make display boards and such for thier cars... it really does help out judging if you forget something,, the judges can see it all in black and white

Use diplay boards (always cool), Chains around cars, Cones, piece of carpet under in front or side of car, Your hood can also be used.., Photo album with progress of your work, Wheel Display always looks cool, Magazine Features in a frame .. Be creative, you already build a sick ride.. now think outside the box :D

Cool. My friends keep pushing me to take my cars to the show. I like attending, but not really wanint to show. :o

This is what I'm planning for.

1. Clear display board with mod list.
2. Slideshows of photoshoots.
3. Brake/wheel stand ??? Whatever that thing is to keep your car balance while taken off the wheels and show your BBK
4. Wheel Display
5. Bottom Mirrors for underneath mods or motorized camera to show on projection.

Now, my question is.

If you have two sets of wheels, would it be funny to have each kind on each side?

Awesome pointers, sir :goodjob:

Not being an ass, I promise... but as far as the whole "scrapbook/photo album" idea... do you guys actually take the time to flip through 'em? Just curious... The few times I brought my old car's photo album out to a show the judges barely even noticed them, even though I mentioned it specifically to them and it was quite easy to access (on radiator support, open). I like to have the album cause I do a lot of my own work, but if it's not gonna make a difference, I'd like to know :)

:stupid:

And they're always made fun of. Example: NOPI judges. People always say that their judging isn't right. Do these people not realize HOW MANY FUCKING CARS THEY HAVE TO JUDGE? They have an assload of cars they have to judge. Yeah, judging may not always seem fair, but they have a good idea on what's been done well.

lol nice post...

i will add this always read the judging sheet at the event or before the event and 3 things all can improve on http://forums.importatlanta.com/images/smilies/goodjob.gif

1) cleanliness, don't be surprised to see a judge wipe a finger around undercarriage... (ask Brett for pointers, he has the cleanest non trailored car i've have ever seen)

2) unique, do small touches others don't have, and don't added them all at once, spread out your mods, b/c judges who judge your car will notice alot of times the minor changes changes (this time i noticed yamil from aap added a chrome front spliter to the front bumper since the last event) creativity is the key to beating out the competition

3) displays, not enough people capitalize on this... its free points! take off a wheel show off those upgraded brakes, have pics available, poster of car build, 3 wheel doggy style your air ride, etc...

thats it...

i will say it would suck to have a show car now a days... competition is really tight almost 3/4 of the cars may be conservative/mild which sucks b/c of the numbers of competition and wild  holy shit... you better have 20+g to play w/ the big boys and thats just locals... on the national level you better pull out the whole deck of cards ;)

I have to say that is the best post i have read on these forums. cleanliness is true. I rubbed my hand all over my inner wheel and wheel well when i was judged at this show and came up with nothing. and the judges eyes when wide.

when I judge the redline invite. bretts car was the cleanest car there I tried to find dirt. I did but it was hard.

yes sir door jams as well, alot of people close their door but don't be surprise if a judge opens one to look for dirt (by the way a closed up car can loose you points, but so can a dirty car way the options if you don't have a system and trunk is bare sometimes its better to leave it closed ;) )

NO SPECIAL TREATMENT FOR ANY CAR. JUDGE ALL CARS THE SAME yes sir, example: if you don't want rock chips on your ride drive w/ tape/mask on the front etc. specially for an out of town show

Would you get a better score for rarity of the car. everything goes on the judges sheet... i would say yes if it were at an IA show. Arash Mahdavi has the rhd silvia and its the farthest thing from a beat up drift car :goodjob:

Here is the IA score sheet we have been using for a while, i've had this score sheet for over 4 years, its used in Tunerfest, Driftfury, and some other events we have judged.

http://www.driftfury.com/img/score_sheet.gif

**** hint hint **** having IA stickers will gain you a couple bonus points, we do look for those on every car :goodjob:

hmmmmm, so can a clean stock car beat out a semi dirty heavily modded car to ya'll?

btw, great list of tips

well if its a heavily modded car i would say probably not... depending on the mods being throughout the car. let me explain further.

clean stock car: on the judges sheet he would get nothing but 1 all the way down until cleanliness then bonus (if something is worth giving, rarity, ia stickers, display, etc) w/ no bonus the max on that judging sheet would be 15/70

heavily modded but dirty car: he could get a max of 60/70... now even though there is a cleanliness category, just b/c you have a built turbo motor doesn't mean you get a 10 in engine... if your motor is dirty and looks like piss then you will definately get a lower score. a beautiful motor would be Tim's supra or Tom's lightening both are amazing rides w/ bling + tons of power under the hood :goodjob:

let me further say i know some other shows in the past a mild car has won BOS, honestly to me that should never happen, if a mild car wins at a show WOW  is all i can say.

normally mild cars get judged as mild and wild gets judged wild. if you have a wild car you better be damn sure you car will be checked through and through. wild class is a more heavily competitive class and its like being on the varsity team you need to step up your game. i remember having judges on their back looking at the undercarraige of my ride for blemishes ;) ... you won't normally see a judges spend that amount of time on a mild car.

what makes you wild? extensive work on the car, shaved, molded, conversions, flashy paint, boosted, lambo doors, air ride, etc... normally a combination of aspects in multiple categorys will give you the WILD class. some cars are borderline sometimes and can be done in either. what may normaly be a mild car can be wild in some shows depending on the compitition, i know we have bumped some cars up/down a class to even out the field.

everything in car shows comes down to judges opinion, 1-2 men decides your score... now when it comes to Best Of's... we have always done that seperately. at IA events Julio/Pablo/I decide together who will recieve the Best of awards... 3 opinions is better then looking at numbers alone, b/c even the 3 of us have our fav and reasons why this car fits the award best.

:yay: :yay: :goodjob:

Everything else sounds good also! Thanks for the pointers, luckly I think i do all of them to the best of my ability. except watching FF on the LCD i dont have :( ha

Tell me about it. I learned that from the ALL STARS man.. gotta be on point.
If you want one of the best to show you how to give a presentation if you are really serious, ask Greg Chupp shit, simply just watch him ,.. dude is a bible when it comes down to it.

Thanks for the compliments Julio, we had fun bro!
-In my time showing, (goin on 19 years now) I found the BIGGEST help in showing is always have a clean car. Not sorta clean, pretty clean, but Spotless...Brett is one of the very best at this. I began winning because I had clean, not radical, radical NEVER makes up for clean, but the two together are hard to beat.
-Next, be ready to be judged, dont pull in a show expecting time to clean...thats what Fri eve is for...you have to sacrifice to win at anything.
-Judging....Always stand near the car, not over the judge, not close enough to read what he's writing, but be in 20 ft, and I always stand, not lay back in a chair like I dont care, because I do.
-If you have 2 min presentation, walk and point, dont stand at one place and recite a list. I learned to do this 2 min run around, I feel better than most everyone because I wanted to win worse. **Its hard for everyone**, so I use to do 2-3 cars per show, just to get over the fear of it. (An Allstar req is be able to do anyones vehicle on the team btw) Also, if you dont know your own car, why are you showin?!
-Expect hard judging w/ regular judges....I showed SLAP w/ my civic widebody. They were after me I thought. I saw how I got judged harder because I won BOS every week, but they would reach in an rub stuff on my car others didnt get looked at. I had RADICAL mods nit-picked and others mild rides were winning best ofs....I wanted to win, so in time I learned what each judged "looked for" and when I knew who was judging I made sure my Fri eve clean was still good enough.
- Get prepped to be screwed occasionally. It happens, and its generally an accidental oversight. If you feel it isnt ASK Our team lost a team award by judging accident last year, we won over the next team by a 20 pt AVG! Thats alot.....I was pissed, but it was too late, all I wanted to hear was "we screwed up" Once I heard that, and we ALL saw the evidence, it was cool.

In the end, go for fun, and TRY, to keep it that way. Losing sucks when you spend big $ to win, so decide if you can handle that before you take the big $ plunge!

Thank you sir. But see thats a good thing and bad thing to be known for. Its good to be looked at that way as far as its nice to know people take notice to what I do and the pride I take in making sure not only that every mod works as part as a theme and flows togther but that the time to make and keep everything clean is recognized. The bad side is because of that when my car is judged I get judged harder (Which I like because it makes me clean the way I have always done it, keeps me challenged) but people expect it to be clean so if they find something, I kick myself for not catching a spot they may have found. So its a good and bad thing :)

It is a PITA to get the car ready for a show after picking up crap off the road every freakin' day..... ;) which is EXACTLY why i dont bother showing this car anymore... it got to the point it was just pointless...

Not to be a jerk, (Because I agree w/ Jaime and the others), But I won Slap Nats Best of Show in Charlotte in 01, and the National Point Championship for '01 w/ a daily driven car. Its ALOT harder than pullin out a trailered car each sat, but it felt better because I knew I earned it. Thats one thing I commend Tim West on doing also, he drives his alot....and its one I put above others in cleanliness w/ Brett and a few others.
Julio and the guys remembered me driving to every show 2-3" off the ground at 90 mph/153 db....it was one of the best years of my life.

Brett

Yeah I dont drive mine daily anymore but dont get it confused with not driving at all, I dont trailer mine, I drive it to every local show, meet and out of state show, I have been to Panama City and N.C for 2 out of state shows already. I do enjoy driving the car and rolling into a show driving it, makes it so much more fun :)

I think what Greg is trying to say is that although he agrees that it's a PITA to get a daily driver prepped for a show.....it can and has been done.

I totally agree. I got plenty of blue painter's tape and late Friday nights to prove it....... :D ;)

I still think we should get SOME preferential treatment damn it!!!!! :lmfao: JP.

Actually Patrycja showed me that one when we went to Spring Break Nats a couple of years ago.

I try and use the thickest one and the longest lines to make it easier to peel off later.

At the big Jacksonville ECI show a while back, I had to get Paul to bring me some cleaner wax to get all the tape glue off my hood because I forgot to bring anything to get stuff like that off. The tape they sell at Home Depot for some reason seems to work better than others.

I figured no one put on events there anymore. Between everyone bitching about the shows like HIN, NOPI, and DUB- they woulndn't come back anymore. It would be nice to see the new generation of showers coming out and showing their rides. I know it was good times for us.

hmm.... hmmm....

I wonder if stock rims can work though? A starion got featured in a mag and it was sportin stock rims that were polished

also what about some other things - like on my car, there isn't much in terms of aesthics. Aside from a stock 83 hood, there's a CF version, which turned out to not be the GREATEST quality. Then of course you got a cowl induction hood. It can actually look pretty nice, but at a show, I don't think it would exactly rule to well?

cowl hood

http://www.26liter.us/gallery/albums/userpics/10197/MarkV2.jpg
^^ 83 hood ( as in a factory optioned hood that only came in 1983 ) - as well as polished stock rims ( sig has painted with polished lip )

then you have stock ( see sig )

Also - do judge's not like vacuum hoses? A quick and not so cheap solution would be a $2000 mpi setup, but, for those who dont have the money laying around for that, would a clean vacuum hose job be frowned down upon? or a TBI setup?

and on a final note - um... what if your car has no bodykit in existence, and making a kit fit would require so much cutting that it more than likely wouldnt look right? Also... what if your car was already... widebodied from the factory? Would a judge necessarily care about that? ( Given if they even knew that the car came that way... lol )

... yea sorry for the long post, but I've been seriously entertaining on entering my car into the show circuit, the main reason being to hope to maybe start to gain some interest from some companies to make a few more aftermarket parts

^^ well. with my car. they dont really make shit. they make a kit for it..and a hood and honestly. thats about it really. so, that forces me to get creative. everything on my car, in my car, is going to have to be custom made. even the kit, i had to force that bitch to fit on there, and eventually just decided to mold it.

its just kinda depends on how much you want to get into it, and how much work you put into it.

now, im not sayin you wont ever be able to win something as it is. but you know just add some little things to it. clean up the engine bay with a few polished/powder coated things. and most of all, make sure the car is CLEAN.

yea but see, with your car, your front end is 1 piece save for that grill

mine is... about like 5 various pieces. I mean I can throw in a turbo duct into the header panel ( panel between the headlights ) - but as for the bumper/airdam, nothing exists really, or even remotely would fit it. I have a CF air splitter being made by a guy in TX at the moment, I even have a rear splitter that sits over the gas tank that is being made as well :) More or less one off stuff that another SQ member has made for his car, and had to do some convincing. Hmm... now I just need to find a small turbo scoop for my hood to place over my turbo for cooling.

Hm, that brings me to another question. For judging, does a semi-stripped race appealed interior partain to their tastes, or are the points for the entire like 400lb fiberglass and tweed sub enclosures with neons and little spiffy moving thingamabobs

aslong as the interior looks nice.. I've seen drag cars the look like shit.. and then I seen drag cars/race preped that have a kick ass interior.
