The photos are over-exposed. What kind of camera?

The black and white makes me think shot in B&W on a Rebel XT?

Overexposure refers to video or film that was shot with too much light or the wrong camera settings, resulting in a whitish, washed-out, faded-looking image.

If this is pretty much what your camera looks like...

set you camera to shutter priority. Now im not really sure how your menus or buttons are placed, but there should be an exposure number that corresponds with a number like 1/250th , 1/60th, 1/450, 1/8000th etc. The lower the bottom number, the longer the shutter stays open, which in results in more light entering. If you find out what setting it was set to, bump it up to a higher number until you start to get a nice even look at the image where there are no highlights. If you have photoshop CS or CS2, you can look at the histogram, or at least im pretty sure you can.

Also, I think I found something close to your camera for a manual. They look almost the same, so Im sure the functions are as well. Read up and you should be well on your way to taking some cool photos.
