this is from an articlei have saved on my pc

OBD0 ECU (http://www.pgmfi.org/twiki/bin/view/Library/ECU) Chipping

If you have a OBD0 (http://www.pgmfi.org/twiki/bin/view/Library/OBD0) ECU (http://www.pgmfi.org/twiki/bin/view/Library/ECU), chipping the ECU (http://www.pgmfi.org/twiki/bin/view/Library/ECU) might not be straightforward. Almost ALL 90-91 PM6, PM7, PR4 and PP5(with catalytic converter) ECU (http://www.pgmfi.org/twiki/bin/view/Library/ECU)s had external EPROM (http://www.pgmfi.org/twiki/bin/view/Library/EPROM)s, and are easy to change the program on. Almost all 88-89 PG7, PM6, PM7 and 88-91 PM8 ECU (http://www.pgmfi.org/twiki/bin/view/Library/ECU)s did not have an external EPROM (http://www.pgmfi.org/twiki/bin/view/Library/EPROM). It is possible to chip these ECU (http://www.pgmfi.org/twiki/bin/view/Library/ECU)s, but it requires considerably more work and is beyond the scope of this article. See Chipping An88-89 ECU (http://www.pgmfi.org/twiki/bin/view/Library/ChippingAn88-89ECU) for more details. The following ECU (http://www.pgmfi.org/twiki/bin/view/Library/ECU) is a PM7 that does not have an external ROM (http://www.pgmfi.org/twiki/bin/view/Library/ROM):

If you are luckier and have an ECU (http://www.pgmfi.org/twiki/bin/view/Library/ECU) with an external EPROM (http://www.pgmfi.org/twiki/bin/view/Library/EPROM) from the factory, the ECU (http://www.pgmfi.org/twiki/bin/view/Library/ECU) you have will look more like this:

http://www.pgmfi.org/twiki/pub/Library/IntroductionToECUChipping/PM6tochip_small.jpg

An OBD0 (http://www.pgmfi.org/twiki/bin/view/Library/OBD0) ECU (http://www.pgmfi.org/twiki/bin/view/Library/ECU) with an external EPROM (http://www.pgmfi.org/twiki/bin/view/Library/EPROM) is very simple to chip. First, cut all 28 pins with a razor blade or utility knife. BE CAREFUL YOU DO NOT SLIP AS YOU CAN PERMANENTLY DAMAGE THE CIRCUIT BOARD. It is not absolutely necessary to do this before desoldering, but removing the chip will make it much easier, particularly if you do not have a good desoldering station. Once the original ROM (http://www.pgmfi.org/twiki/bin/view/Library/ROM) is desoldered and removed and you can see through the holes in the circuit board, add a socket for an EPROM (http://www.pgmfi.org/twiki/bin/view/Library/EPROM) and then place the new ROM (http://www.pgmfi.org/twiki/bin/view/Library/ROM) you have created into the socket.

it looks like the 28 pin chip is the factory chip soldered to the board...not chipped. pwo is a jdm vtec ecu. it can be socketed/chipped if you'd like. let me know if i can be of assistance.

okay all this is fine - the ecu is more than likely bad - very hard to explain but the car will start acting like it is out of gas like puttering when u hit the gas , but will not die , but u turn the key off and crank the car back up and it drives fine ..... very weird but it may be something else if u guys know something i dont but scotty pm me a price on me supply a p28 on chipped or socketed , and u tune right ?
