1985 Dodge Omni GLH

1985 was the debut of the real Goes Like Hell model with the turbocharged Turbo I engine option. New
engineering included equal-length halfshafts, a stronger A-525 transaxle, beefier wheel hubs and bearings
(based on experience from Chrysler and Shelby's racing programs), revised performance exhaust and suspension
refinements to handle the extra power. Part of the GLH Performance package was black side skirts and a black
airdam. The turbocharged engine gave the GLH figures of 0-60 in 7.5 seconds ,quarter mile of 15.8 seconds at 87
mph and a top speed of up to 119 mph. 6,513 GLHs where made that year: 3,004 carburated, 3,509 turbocharged
and 1,269 were painted Santa Fe Blue (other color production numbers are unknown). 1986 Dodge Omni GLHS

1986 is the last year for the GLH, and, as a result, the car was
completely carried over, unchanged, except for an added third
brake light . The final 500 GLH cars were sold to Shelby and
were sent to his new plant in Whittier, California, where they
were used as the basis for the Shelby GLHS (Goes Like Hell
Some [more]).

Koni adjustable shock absorbers were specified, along with
Shelby made wheels and special tires. The Turbo II engine was
modified with a special radiator assembly for an intercooler, two
piece intake manifold, multi-port fuel injection, larger Garrett turbo,
and other changes to produce 175 hp and a flat 175 ft·lb torque curve. Performance was impressive, with just 6.5
sec needed for 0-60 mph and 14.8 sec for the quarter mile run. Top speed was 130 mph. Other modifications
included a Shelby Automobiles dash number plate, an unpegged speedometer with applique indicating up to 135 mph,
and a leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knob.

Originally intended to be a late '85 model release, production
delays kept the Omni GLHS from dealer's lots until the spring of
1986. The performance world was set on its ear by early
reviews, including an April '86 Hot Rod Magazine cover with the
announcement "GLHS WHIPS GT-350!" and a comparison article
declaring the little Omni 2-seconds faster over a side by side
lap at Willow Springs and 1-second faster in the quarter-mile than
a '66 Shelby Mustang. Speed and power was improved
tremendously compared to the GLH, but at a cost - a slightly
harsher ride, and care had to be taken when pushing the car
quickly over surfaces that were less than ideal, as the little Omni
could lose grip going over bumps.

The GLHS was sold through Dodge dealerships that stepped up to a Shelby Automobiles franchise at $10,995 sticker
price. 3,129 were made: 882 carburated and 2,247 turbocharged; 824 were Santa Fe Blue (other color production
numbers are unknown). 1986 Shelby GLHS Specifications
