I just put exhaust on my gsr and wanted to know why the vtec kicks in twice.. My brother has a type-s and it kicks in all at once, so i dont know if its just a gsr thing.. I'm guessing it did it all along, but i just couldn't hear it before. What happens at 4500 the tone changes just like my brothers does when his vtec kicks in, but at 5800 it changes again and you can really hear it in the intake and exhaust.. I bought this car used awhile back and it had the ls/vtec setup and i just recently changed it back to gsr, so i dont know what it had done to it previously.. Thanks for any help!

the GSRs have a "secondary" hit that is not quite audible as the primary VTEC kick.
It occurs when the "secondary butterflies" open or shut. on GSRs the secondaries open around 4200 an primary "VTEC" kicks at 5800ish. sometimes, you can hear it very slightly.
Also, all vtec motors should have a "second dary hit" if they are tuned right. Usually you have the first audible change when VTEC locks, then, there is a slight pitch change later on in the power band, its rare, but properly tuned NA motors do it. If you search around on Rocket Motorsports message board, he goes in depth with it

secondaries are gay, and the worst part if you disconnect that vacuum line then the car won't run as well, only way around is changing the damn IM out.

my vtec is reasonably loud, but i rarely let it get that high with these gas prices, i shift at or around 3500

gsr vtec kicks in @ 4500 and at around 5800 the secondary butterflies open there no second vtec just because gsr's are dual stage vtec doesnt mean theres two

PLAIN AND SIMPLE,most vtech motors have 1 stage of vetech that rips at 5000 rpm, some gsrs have 2 stages of vetech, some people love it,honestly, the 2nd stage aint all dat badass, but its normal dude.I would go back to a ls/vetech bro,the ls crankshaft has more stroke than any vetech moter, including type r's,which means more torqe, the gsr heads have more compression than a ls head,ls/vetech,the best swap, and its cheaper

what the FUCK did you just say??
it's simple
4500 rpms- secondaries open, makes audible pitch change (depending on exhaust)
5800 rpms- VTEC pops, less audible sound engine pitch changes slightly (again depending on exhaust)

I believe that the secondaries and fairly quiet and when vtec actually engagages its fairly loud. Thats how every dohc vtec car ive been in was. (gsr)

that's why i said depending on exhaust. i was in my buddie's 99 GSR, with just the muffler unbolted (he was about to put on a new exaust) and that's the way it went. who knows it may be different for everybody else
