drifting 101

so i am used to drivin fwd cars, since thats all i've ever owned. well i'm gettin a 92 300zx TT and was wonderin if anyone could give me some pointers on drifting, and all the basic fundamentals.

First off you have picked a horrible car for drifting.

It weighs way too much and you'll break shit.

Second, search.

clutch kicking is a good way to break loose. E-breaking is another way, but in most cases it is preffered that you use the e-brake for corrections. There are some exceptions. Get the drift bible. It's kind of cheezy but most of us have seen it :D it has multiple camera angles and shows you foot movement in synchrony with the hands and the brakes. I don't drift the way they show you in the drift bible but it is still good at tellingyou what the bascis are. You will get your won techniques with time. like what Tracy said, watch Drift Bible, but like 1439 said... that car is a TANK - its more suitable for drag

you want a medium to light chassis with a high revving engine

that's why a lot of people use the s14 240. With the SR20DE-T it has 50/50 weight dist.

300zxs suck for drifting. If you want to drift with it you need some serious chassis and frame stiffening stuff. I know someone who tried drifting with a stock one. He hit a bump and the whole frame got fucked up and warped. Don't do anything stupid.

You CAN drift a Z32, suspension work is a definite plus though and I would not suggest practicing or playing on the street...the learning curve isn't quite the same as some of the lighter cars.

Best is to play on a skidpad or large parking lot, in a 1st or 2nd gear roll try tapping the brake with the left foot [pushing the car's weight forward] while rolling into the throttle with the right foot then gently holding the brake down if you have to (just enough so it applies light pressure to the front brakes only)...holding 5-6k rpm's you should be able to keep it sideways (powerbraking), eventually let off the brake and start using the throttle to steer the car...feathering it will keep it going in the right direction and letting off completely will bring the rear around more than you want.

Invest in a new differential and alot of shitty tires to play on :)

You can drive a car with your feet out the window but its not that good of an idea. How many z32s do you see professionals slinging around?

He probably doesn't have to invest in a diff if it already has an r200 though.

i've seen several Z32's sliding. i'd imagine the reason for people not using them is the weight and general cost of the car and it's parts, not so much that it's some wildly unbalanced machine like a lot of people try to make it out to be.

best bet, sign up for a drift event and get some seat time with an instructor in the car. it's the only way to learn properly and not likely to get your car wadded up.

He probably doesn't have to invest in a diff if it already has an r200 though.Doesn't the Z31's & 240's have the R200, J30 & Z32 N/A use an R200V, and the Z32 TT's have a 230mm ring gear (R230)? I guess the stock VLSD would be suitable but wouldn't hurt to put in a 4.10 gear set ;)

The balance was near perfect with just the right amount of fuel and there are plenty of ways to reduce the near 3,200 lb. weight :eek: ...
