i've never rented a car before, yeah crazy but just one of those things i've never had to do until this past weekend.
Being ready to get on the road as soon as i could i really didn't pay attention to the billing and thought the total included the deposit so wasn't concerned. Anyways, i've always heard to get the insurance...maybe it was just from watching too much CKY? The bill for the car was around $130 but the insurance/waiver BS added an extra $120+?!!! When i was billed $260+ i assumed that was the cost plus the deposit and the deposit would be refunded upon return (or maybe not charged but at least held until return).
Is there really any point in getting the insurance if my sole purpose isn't to go out and trash the car? Won't my own insurance cover accidents or damage? This is all new to me :dunno: Not that it really matters because i'm being refunded, it's just the principal when i say how much something is going to be and it's actually twice as much.

I rented plenty of cars and ill tell you ... you got ripped off or didnt pay attention at there insurance charge.
I usually rent through Enterprise :
They will do a Authorization charge on a CREDIT CARD for " 1 " And if you do not have a credit car you can use a DEBIT VISA/MASTERCARD for $150.00 wich they will withdrawal asap but refund the money once you return the vehicle within days you rented the car.
Enterprise charges $25.00 for insurance, I pay this just to keep my insurance out of it incase somethings happens, I think is a good thing.
Those charges are on top of the rental fee.
I prefer to keep my insurance out of it, unless is like a crazy insurance fee wich by the looks of it, you got charge a crazy fee.

How is it a waste of money?
You wreck that car.. you will end up paying more for your insurance then the fee you couldve paid at the rental car place....
And you work for one?

I used a Visa debit and i was told it would be a $150 deposit like you said but it was billed like a credit card...flat rate of $250 and got charged the extra $13.00 when i dropped the car off.

Man.. thats weird and dont look right .. I would go back. I have rented 20+ times from them and is always the same way.
$25.00 insurance - flate rate + whatever days I use the car wich is usually like 20 to 25 bucks a day.
And Bring it back with the same fuel I took it with. I wish I had a copy of my last Rental..

paying for insurance? If you wreck it still goes back to insurance when you renew in terms of rate increase. You pay your deductible at your own insurance company if you crash. The insurance they offer is a waste.

Depends on which perspective you view it from:
Of course it serves as an avenue for the company to generate more revenue. Generating additional income is based solely on the probability of the renter returning the vehicle without damage.
What if something happend during the rental though: hail damage, flat tire, parking lot damage hit n run, mistakes etc. etc. That 12.99/15.99/20.99/29.99 per day charge, depending on the type of rental (retail, corporate, insurance etc) covers the vehicle up to a total loss or 6k in damage (depending on vehicle type). Say you dodge a squirrel and hit a tree; you actually paid for the right to bring that car back and say "Thank God I don't owe you guys for any damages"
If you don't purchase the insurance you take on the risk or being financially responsible for any damages whether it be through your own insurance or personal resources.
Some people get it some people don't all depends on your reasoning.
Yo Jason, seems like the rep didn't explain the product to well, where'd you rent from?

Let me share my experience w/ BUDGET rental cars. Last yr in Cali we used buget. I specifically said I did not want their insurance. We filled out the paperwork, and got into the car. Before I pulled off the lot the Check engine light came on. So instead of it breaking down or being blamed for damaging the car I went back in and demanded another car. No problem they printed out the paperwork on the car, and I initialed everything again, and signed at the bottom. When we returned the car it was $250 more than it was supposed to be. The agent was supposed to copy over the original selections from the first car to the 2nd cars paperwork. They made the mistake of selecting that I wanted insurance (or was it on purpose?). Unfortunately I was in a rush, and didn't look over the paperwork carefully the 2nd time, and initialed it. Not that it would of been obvious. Everything you initial is coded (ex: VSSC, IFVS, etc). I'm willing to bet the pull this trick a lot. Ask you, select the opposite, and hope you initial it anyway.
The worst part is the car sat in a parking lot for 5 days while we were on a cruise. Without insurance it was cheaper to rent the car for the entire time vs renting it for 2 days, turning it in, and renting again for 1 more day when we returned. They refused to take off the extra insurance charges at the location, so I called their 800 number when I got home, and they also refused. Sure they made an extra $250 off me, but they just lost thousands in future rentals from me or anyone in my family. Anyway avoid BUDGET RENTAL CARS. They may be cheaper from the looks, but you get what you pay for. The first car was junk, the 2nd one was wrecked on the passenger side. Had I known I actually had their insurance I would of finished it off by slaming it into a wall.
