Thief locks self inside van
A new use for child safety locks: They not only keep children inside cars, they work equally well on would-be thieves.
Things appeared to be going well for Angel Tarazon in the early morning hours of May 8. According to Columbus police, the Ohio man had just successfully broken into a van that belonged to an appliance repair company and had collected a cache of repair tools to take with him. But his good luck deserted him when he tried to exit the van and found himself trapped inside.

Sergeant Mike Woods said the van was equipped with child safety locks that were activated when Tarazon initially entered the vehicle and closed the side door behind him. Tarazon was unable to get to the driver's section to deactivate the system because of a steel cage that separated the front from the rear section of the vehicle.

Tarazon remained in the vehicle until a company employee showed up at about 7:10 a.m. and discovered him in the vehicle. The man, however, refused to let the trapped thief out and contacted police instead.

Columbus police arrested Tarazon at about 7:25 a.m. Sgt. Woods said several tools were recovered from his pocket.

Tarazon was charged with theft from a motor vehicle and criminal damaging. He is currently in the Franklin County Jail.

The manager of a charitable fundraising enterprise in Davenport has been fired for alleged financial mismanagement, drug use and having sex with a woman on his desk.

Chris T. Coppinger of Davenport was fired in March from Mohassan Grotto 22, where he worked as co-manager of the organization's charitable bingo operation.

He was fired after his supervisors allegedly found $1,000 in cash and checks in his office, along with a condom and a jar of urine that appeared to have been hidden. Coppinger was subsequently accused of smoking marijuana and drinking alcohol in the building; having pornography on his work computer; having sex with another person on his desk; and ordering a 15-year-old co-worker to urinate in a jar. He also was fired for failing to deposit cash and checks the organization had collected.

At a hearing dealing with Coppinger's request for unemployment benefits, Coppinger admitted to drinking and having sex with a woman on his desk, but he testified that many other members of the organization had engaged in sex on that same desk. He offered no witnesses to support that claim and was denied benefits.

The Davenport chapter of Mohassan Grotto raises $50,000 to $60,000 per year for various charities through its bingo games.

According to Iowa Workforce Development records, these other Iowans have recently quit or been fired from jobs:

• Violet Black of Libertyville was fired in March from the Ottumwa Good Samaritan Center, where she had worked as a nurse on the overnight shift for the past few years. She was fired after it was discovered that sealed containers of patient medications had been opened and the prescription drugs inside had been replaced with over-the-counter pain killers. The containers were then resealed with glue. Black was alleged to be the only person with access to the drugs and, while at work, she allegedly tested positive for opiates for which she had no prescription.

• Andrea Meyer of Marion was fired in March from Professional Home Health Services, where she worked as an in-home caregiver. In early March, Meyer was being paid to provide overnight care for a terminally ill cancer patient in the woman's apartment. She was accused of sleeping on the job, which resulted in the patient having to get to and from the bathroom without assistance. A week before, she was reprimanded after refusing to give a bath to a quadriplegic child she was being paid to help.

• Karen Ballanger of Centerville was fired in March from the Seymour Care Center, where she worked as a licensed practical nurse. She was accused of failing to report a resident injury that resulted from two nurse aides improperly transferring a resident from her bed to a wheelchair. The resident sustained two broken legs.

• Bennie L. Abbott of Iowa City was fired in March from the Chatham Oaks Care Facility in Iowa City, where he worked as a driver. He was fired after transporting a resident in one of the care facility's vehicles and then leaving the vehicle unlocked. The resident returned to the vehicle to retrieve a can of de-icing fluid, which she then drank in an apparent suicide attempt. The resident recovered, and Abbott was given a written warning. That was changed to a dismissal after state officials learned of the matter and fined the home.

• Vicki Murren of Hawarden was fired from Westbend Care Center in Sioux City, where she worked as a licensed practical nurse. She was fired for forcing a resident to take a narcotic drug, despite the resident's protests.

• Peggy A. McElhaney of Lowden was fired in March from Dewitt's Community Care home for the mentally retarded. She was fired after a 30-minute altercation with her son, who was a resident of the home and was confined to a wheelchair. She was accused of striking her son twice in the mouth, then swearing at him.

ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) - Two teenagers were charged with setting fires in suburban Washington after they bragged about the blazes on MySpace.com, authorities said.
The 17-year-old schoolmates were involved in 17 fires in Montgomery County, fire officials said Friday. The teens face 22 charges, including two counts each of first-degree arson and four counts of second-degree arson.

Their names were not released because they were charged as juveniles.

Stores, vehicles, a bowling alley and two school buses were set on fire between Jan. 20 and April 16. Investigators got a tip to check out the online social networking site MySpace.com, where they found photos and descriptions.

"The significant thing is they posted on the Internet, and bragged about the fires, and that certainly allowed us to break the case," county Fire Chief Thomas W. Carr Jr. said. "They posted photos of these fires."

The teens are being held at a juvenile detention center.

"Whatever their motive is, they took the opportunity to set numerous fires," Carr said. "The neighbors were very much concerned about the terror in their neighborhood. They were freaked out."
