Alright my girlfriend has caught the bug and wanted a manual car. It started out as a new passat but then I told her if she gets manual it has to be turbo and then the awd naturally came in to play. So we were looking at S4's but for her the A4 is perfect. She has about 14K she wants to spend.
I've already got a list of mild mods that I want to do, 2.5 inch homemade catback, neuspeed springs, forge diverter valve, k&n filter, boost gauge, debadge, tint, black grille. I can't wait.....
These are fun to drive and stock and even mildy modified they don't really throw you in your seat like im used to but they are smooth and still lots of fun plus she thinks they're pretty. :D
That being said on lets say a 01 A4 1.8t quattro what do I need to look for/replace right off the bat?
Thanks guys.

- if it's got high miles, find out if the timing belt has been replaced.
- service records: full synthetic every 3k-5k is a must.
ummm there are quite a few more things, but I can't think right now.

I mean stuff like that is a given but what about any seals that are faulty particular to that motor, suspension problems, etc.

MAF :D
You have knowledge, I think you as her guide should be ok. Just like decker said.
Timing belt would be my biggest thing since is known to be a problem, well atleast on the TT's.
I think they are solid.

Before ANY of that...Chip it. No sense upgrading anything in the engine without it. Easiest 50hp and 60lbs you will ever get :goodjob:

to tell you the truth, i would get EPG to take a look at any Audi you plan on purchasing... there are tons of things to look at depending on mileage and condition of the car. also i would chip it !~GIAC~! before i would do anything else to the car, safely max the turbo and run the car how it should be ran. if you want to talk to EPG or take it up there let me know :goodjob:
i know GIAC chip put julios TT +50whp/+70lbs

Now I don't know how the chipped ECU's work in VW land but for DSM'ers it's pretty performance oriented (2 step studderbox, octane reset, no lift to shift) stuff like that. I really don't think she wants or needs 50 more hp, just some stuff to make the turbo breathe easier. Maybe if they make a mildly tuned one to smooth out the fuel curve a little bit.
But yeah she's looking at 00 to 01 A4 quattros with about 75k miles on them.

save your money and chip it. a cat back will gain you 1whp if your lucky. with any 1.8t its about the chip&dp
chip&dP= 800.00 = 65+whp

Alright I'll keep that in mind.
But yeah she wants either an a4 or passat no jettas or golfs. Sorry. :(

So is it that 1.8ts have really good flowing exhausts stock or is the turbo too small stock to benefit from a more free flowing exhaust?
I can understand a dp but the bottleneck effect doesnt change anything? Also the stock blow off valve is plastic I believe and the bosch ones that are in some porsches are metal. To me that would be a good upgrade as well. I'm still learning about the mechanics that make these how they are.

The stock exhaust is not that bad. But anything to make it breathe better is def better... But, if its just chipped with a KN drop in it will be a fun car compare to stock. Exhaust wont gain much but it will give it a nice sounds and the looks.
Give you and Idea :
My TT wich has a 1.8t with a ko4
Stock #'s Dynoed at BG
180 Hp / 195 tq
After a K&N drop in, Forge DV and GIAC Chip
Total $
Chip $500
DV $ 135
K&N $ 50
----------
$685
225 hp and 275 tq.
I havent done anything else to the car.. Looks completely stock and is fun ass hell. I think the A4 has a ko3, Not 100% sure. Still no major diffrences between the ko3 and ko4.
My Next step is a DP.. all the other mods, Im not interested since It wont do much.

stock exhaust is poop. you could get a cheap 2.5" or 3" downpipe and hook an electronic dump up ... but I would suggest a 2.5" turbo back exhast. Should be more than enough to open the turbo up.
yes, upgrade the DV. Those things are weak and break when you start modding. Companies like Bailey's and Forge make aftermarket DVs ... or you could just snatch one from a TT.

the only thing your going to gain from your exhaust is lbs... you really not going to gain any whp... but its still pointless... to start out you need to do Chip + DV + k&n = easy 40+whp/70+lbs more... she'll think that 1.8t she bought was a v8 it will have so much torque... the best thing too is that it will still be very smooth, it will drive like it was meant to and it is 100% safe tuning. :goodjob: no mod is better then new software.
from there DP + 2.5-3" exhaust

hmm ... I guess I'm the only one that noticed a difference when I put my exhaust on.

i guarantee you only made a handfull if that whp, but if its a good exhaust you should make some lbs... i made 11lbs and like 3whp :goodjob: , i know certain exhaust like greddy rob your car of power :D

Thats weird you guys dont get power from more free flowing exhaust.
Throw a turbo back on a stock 1g dsm and boost rises a pound and you make 35 whp +.
Yeah, I appreciate the advice from you guys. And keep in mid this is for a girl that just wants the car because its pretty, manual, and has heated seats. She doesnt care about going fast, I just wanted to make it a little more responsive. So no 3 inch exhaust. Maybe 2.5 but other than that, quiet, quiet, quiet.

35+whp on a exhaust isn't going to happen on a vw/audi; good luck though on the ride, atleast drop the chip for when you have to drive, its a waste to buy a turbo vw and not upgrade the software ;)

Get a Passat :D
As far as the chip goes you will know you want one once you drive an unchipped car. Boost lag SUCKS. Once you chip it, almost all of the lag goes away. Stock turbo only spikes at around 7-9lbs anyway where as chipped on a logitudinal 1.8T will spike close to if not higher then 20.
