This has bothered me for a while and I'm curious for an answer: Why does the D16Y7 engine have that weird intake manifold layout (specifically the verticle throttle body) instead of a plenum like the Y8?
Here's a theory of mine: The Y7 may exist because a Y8 manifold design without the VTEC on the head might cause only a very small loss in performance as seen by the "average consumer". There's only 20hp difference as it is, and that isn't an insane amount. How much of that 20hp is b/c of the Y8 engine's better intake manifold? Has anyone ever dyno'd a Y8 with VTEC "on" and a Y8 without VTEC just for the hell of it?

I'm just curious b/c I've got a Y7 engine now and I've had a Y8 in the past. I can tell the difference when I think about driving each of them, the Y8 is definitely stronger, but it makes me wonder why they built the Y7's intake so radically different. Why did Honda design 2 intake manifolds instead of using the same one and just disabling the VTEC on the head?
