View Full Version : Gauging interest, import vs domestic matches

OK Guys, im throwing this out there as a topic before I put any effort into trying to try to plan any specifics.
As eveyone knows, esp the kills forum crew, there is a LOT of smack talking on IA. A lot of it stems from domestic vs import bashing.
So, Im looking to see who would seriously be interested in getting a track-day setup for an imports vs domestics race. Once again, I dont know what tracks have days available, so I will have to see. Im more biased to Silver Dollar, but it looks like it might be full-up through the summer on weekends already. It might have to be somewhere farther away though.
Anyway, in order to work, this will obviously take some commitment from people in advance. We would probably need to collect-up the track rental fee in advance.
It would probably be fair to have some types of classes, to keep the v8 mustangs from raping the N/A 4 cyl hondas (except vteckidd, of course LOL,) but I think that would be overly complicated. So, Im thinking just run-what-you-brung, call-out matches between whoever wants to race.
One class that I do think would be cool at least would be a 4-cyl import vs 4 cyl domestic race.
Anyway, post up your thoughts. I think this could be cool.

I'm game. I want 5 lengths... and the V8s must take off their steering wheels. I will let them get the break though... I want to make it fair.

it sounds like a good idea and pretty reasonable. I'm thinkin' that a lot of people would step up just to see which is better.

Actually, I kinda expected it to be mainly srt4's for the domestics, but there are others. For example, a cobalt ss, saturn ion or focus svt would smoke most ricer hondas and the like. I guess it depends on how many really fast 4 cyls are there.
Maybe we could have a fastest 4 cyl car period... Let the evo/sti/srt4/honda/sr20 guys battle it out for king 4 cyl.

No problems, ill be racing my pickup too, probably, if we can make this work-out. Its a v6.
Im thinking we dont want to get too complicated with classes, but its up to the general concensus. I agree we want it to be fun for everyone, so we need to have some balance. Im thinking in reality, this will just turn into a free-for-all grudge match, which is certainly cool also. Import vs imports are fine too, but in the interest of the theme, we should schedule those after the import vs domestics.
Good feedback guys, keep the suggestions coming. Its cool to see people are on-board with it.
If youve got other track suggestions, shoot me a PM. It seems a lot of 1/4 mile tracks are pretty booked on weekends already. We might have better chance at an 1/8th mile track, and it would be cheaper. The problem is that it will put a lot of turbo cars at a disadvantage against the domestics.
What do you all think about 1/8th mile?
I sent an email to the track director at Steele to ask for specifics on these types of events there. Ive never been to that track, so it would be new for me.
I havent seen too many of the normally-vocal domestics responding though, hopefully they didnt all get banned or something haha

no that is a bad idea. while i do drive my car easily on the street i dont drive it much anymore on the street just to take care of it. I will NEVER EVER drive my car to the track, thats asking for trouble. We shear axles and shit on 200whp cars and it wouldnt seem like it would happen. the whole point of having a car is for it to get you from point A to point B. if it can't do that, then why even have a car? track racing is fun but i see way too many people complaining about their cars not being able to run. if your car can't make it to the track, how is it supposed to run on the track?

Agreed. While I daily drive my car, there's much more of a risk of something breaking on 600+ whp cars than your regular stock Sentra Spec V and you're defintely not going to help us tow it back, so trailering is the only option.
It's one thing to break in metro Atlanta or 20 miles from home. It's another story to break down in another state or several hours away.

i know in my lightly modded Z24 is able to out run most stock/lightly modded/ricer 4cyclinder (and some 6 cyclinders) hondas. and some v6 stangs. colbalt ss is heavier than my car so that puts it behind my car. saturn ion(light) and the colbalt ss s/c(heavy) has the GM s/c so it's pretty fast. focus svt are weak.

Please use periods. But Spoolin does have a point. Having a 600+ horsepower car does cause serious problems when traveling long distances. What if something goes wrong? Not only that...think about what his gas mileage is like.
Someone said something about mildly modded 4 bangers versus havily modded ones. Honeslty, if your doing this for the title of fastest 4 cylinder then it should be run what you brung, no matter the mods. If you break it down too much then it looses the point of being the fastest 4 cylinder.
Just my :2cents:

I am brand new to the IA seeing as I drive a domestic right now...HOWEVER...I am a car enthusiast and like ALL kinds of cars. I don't know a guy who drives a domestic out there who doesn't like Ferraris,Lamborghinis, Porsche..etc. So if they like those cars they have to like imports right?! I also happen to really like the jap cars as well. When you have a 1000rwhp Supra that drives around town like stock and makes that kind of power...well damn!! Even at half that power for a street car is insane. You will never hear me bash an import just for being an import, I think that is stupid on so many levels just like I wouldn't bash a Ford for being a Ford although I did own one and wasn't impressed (although it wasn't an 03+ Cobra, Lightning, SVT Focus, etc. either)! I guess I'm sayin that most of us like cars of all makes and models so bashing one or the other is kinda stupid in my opinion!! This sounds like an awsome idea, I would def. be down. maybe for classes we could have some qualifying rounds (kinda like they do when you are bracket racing) and divide people into different e/t classes based on the first runs? ex. class A = 11sec and faster , class b = 11.0-11.99, class c = 12.0-12.99...etc. :2cents: Or you could just have a domestic staging lane and a import lane and just line up to whatever you're next to (well maybe take an hour or 2 for grudge matches where you can line up against any car).
edit: I just read the part about possibly renting an 1/8 track :jerkit: I think it should be 1/4. If it ends up being a 1/8 I'll probably just watch.

actually, the 85 Svo put out 205hp to the crank, and it was the most powerful engine any year SVO had. So that 205hp to the crank converts to alot less hp to the wheels. Just thought you should know;)

Guys, thanks for all the input.
Im kinda surprised by the amount of response here, so Im afraid that if everyone who appears to be interested actually showed-up, its going to be hard to finish the event if we get too caught-up on sticking to classes.
Its looking more and more like it needs to be just run-what-you-brung. The point here isnt to start some trophy class...its to get out there and let out all of these pent-up keyboard-racing aggressions on your fellow car enthusiasts. So, if you have a mild or stock car, and you dont want to accept a call-out from a racecar, thats understandable. Same applies to the trailer-car vs not. It may just need to be up to you.
Then, we can determine the "fastest 4 cyl" or whatever "classes" we want using the results from the event.
I supposed to have a call setup with an organizer at Steele today, so hopefully Ill have more info on that tomorrow.
BTW, Ive seen some 10 second SVO's out there with the ford 2.3 turbo. Its an archaic motor, but Ive seen people go fast with them. There is also a nitroused SVT focus that I used to hear about at Moreland that ran pretty good. Point is, there are some fast non-SRT4 domestics 4 cylinders LOL

COGCaviZ24 no offense but why pick appart my post and you really need to check your facts...84-86 Mustang SVO Special Vehicle Operations(not SVT..this might have been before your time)was a stock 2.3L sohc 4 banger intercooled turbo 205-210hp depending on year..was also in the Thunderbird turbo coupe 87-88 and in the Merkur XR4Ti. A non-intercooled turbo version was available in earlier 80's T-bird models. I meant Sunbird not Sunfire...my mistake...but as far as it and the grand am turbo not existing it was available 87,88,89,90(90 in the sunbird not the grand am) (again my bad, I was close on the year)...2.0L 122cid L4 F/I turbo STOCK from GM. Why do I know they exist...I've driven one back in 1990. Black 4 dr Grand Am turbo...with the waste gate adjusted for more boost these things were insane fun, but huge torque steer and NOT alot of aftermarket parts. Oh, the supra comment was not a 1000hp supra stock, I said "drives around town LIKE stock" meaning it doesn't have drivability issues like a huge cam in a V-8 but makes more hp with the boost. By the way who pissed in your cornflakes...I was being complimentary and you tryed to tear me up by picking apart my whole post...WTF??!! At least know what your talking about before telling me I'm wrong. Peace brother...damn!!

I'm an old !@#$ and have been into cars since I was 12 so alot of the more obscure domestic hot rods have either been driven by me or have been owned by a friend of mine. Heres another one...1986 Dodge Omni GLHS turbo (175hp/car weighed 2200lbs.). These cars are very rare (500 made) but would smoke a 5.0 mustang GT back in the day. Damn funny to see that stock omni smoke the front tires all the way up a parking lot(1988). Back to the original questions....when & where will this event take place?? I would like to attend even with my slipping 3rd gear...LOL!!

I already mentioned the omni...and I could be wrong but I think there were a little more than that made because a friend of mine had one and got totaled. He didn't he too much trouble finding another.

how about these guys
Buick Grand National = V6 fucking FAST
GMC Syclone & Typhoon =V6 AWD monster
turbo 80's Thunderbird's = 4 banger turbo heavy but fast
SC Thunberbird's =V6 heavier but almost as fast as a GN stock
even a 4.3 V6 S10 modded could hang with some
and as metioned above GLHS omni's and the other Shelby cars like Chargers 2.2,
how about the turbo factory toyota pickups 85-86ish

Just to comment on comments made earlier...
There are people out there who *daily* drive their ~500hp ~ 600hp+ cars to work, school, other places, the track, vacations, long distances, etc. without a problem. It's not like you're going to be making more than 100hp for most of the *daily* driving anyways... and as long as your build is solid and tune is right, nothing should break or overheat 'n what not. Oh, this is assuming by ~500hp ~ 600hp, you mean that power is made on pump gas. If so, then I can see how gas mileage might be an issue... lol

An S10/sonoma with a 4.3 vortec? Those cant be made fast... or can they?
There are definately plenty of fast domestics to come out. Surprisingly, though, Ive seen none of the usual domestics chime in yet.
The four tracks Ive been looking at are Commerce, Reynolds, Carolina Dragway and Steele.
My preference is Reynolds, although Ive never been to Steele or Carolina. Ive heard that Carolina is a very nice track from several of my friends who have been there.
Steele is known for its "overly enthusiastic" timers, i.e. they tend to show faster ET's than other tracks. However, for the case of a grudge-match type affair, that might not be an issue.
Ive been having a hard time getting in touch with the people at the tracks. They dont have very regular schedules. Ill post an update when I do finally get in touch with them.
I heard from my friends who have organized other events that we are talking around $1500 to privately rent Carolina (I estimated 30-40 cars.) I expect Commerce and Reynolds to be similiarly priced, but I dont know yet. Someone told me that they think Reynolds will do it for $1000, but I havent confirmed.
I did talk to the owner of Steele, and he said they would do it for $500 for a private session, 10am to 3 PM on Sunday, with the option of staying later if you want (but it will open to the public afterwards for normal test and tune.)
Seeing that I dont have any idea who will show-up, and that I dont want to be stuck putting up $1500 and only have a few people come (we would need 60 people @ $25/person to pay me back $1500,) Im leaning towards Steele. Im not looking to make any money personally, but I dont want to be stuck with $1000 balance at the end of the day either.
The *tentative* date at Steele is June 11th.
In the interest of getting more attendance, I think we should let people just race whoever they want. I still want a domestic vs imports part at first, then just a normal racing or test and tune...whatever people want to do. I just havent seen enough domestics chime-in.
I think we will skip "classes" and just make it a call-out grudge-match. Like I said earlier, if you dont want to race a car that was trailered-in, dont. I really dont expect anyone to be trailering-in any track-queens to race in this.
Anyway, when I have more info, ill post it.

i frequent steele, their timers are not enthusiastic. They are right on with all of the others.
june 11th is the same day as the mainstream dyno day just to put out date conflicts with events that people might rather go to closer to home.
on a personal note, july would be good, my car wont be done till like mid june

If I can make it out, I can bring whichever you choose (to help even up the numbers), import or domestic.

Im going to ask the admins to lock this thread, and ill start a new one next week when I have the arrangements made. Until then, please post on the thread listed above.
Please do not post this information on any other sites until I have a definate schedule.
