They should put him in a stockade in downtown NY (with security). Passers by should be allowed 1 strike (no weapons). When he is within 1 inch of death, they should take him to get treated, and give him sometime to heal before repeating the process.

Spending your life in prison is a worse punishment than simply dying... I mean I dunno what's going to happen to him after he dies, but simply spending your life confined and treated like an animal is way worse than a couple seconds of pain I would think.

I had actually read that the point was made to the jury that, if he were executed for it, he would become a martyr for al-qaeda, which they didnt want. This way, he'll get shanked after being forced to toss someones salad, and the problem will just go away ;)
