View Full Version : LS vs B20 (non-vtec)

Well, I'm tired of my lil d16a6 in my crx, so it's about time for a upgrade. So my question is what would be a better swap, LS or a B20 (non vtec now). Keep in mind that all I'm going to do is add a few bolt-ons to it (no nos, turbo, or sc). So I don't want to hear about the sleeves of the B20. I just want to get some feedback about the two engines. Thanks for your help.

b20 all the way man. i had the b18b factory in the teg, blew it up, and dropped the b20. i must say it pulls alot harder. for basically the same money, do the b20. its got ALOT more tq, AND is just as tuner friendly as the ls.

FI=LS, anything else B20... B20 with an LS IM and some LS cams make for a very awsome stock swap...especialy in a CRX

b20 longblock is about 500-600, and I hope you're going to be using a gsr tranny on it

i'm just using my factory ls tranny for now, simply because i love the taller gearing. the car's not going to be phenominal in acceleration, so give it more top end, and you're set for some nice hwy cruising.

Do the b20 and b18 have the same cams or the ls cams is a little bit better????

You have B18A's, B18B's, USDM B20B's (8.8:1 comp), USDM B20Z's(9.6:1 comp), JDM B20B's (8.8:1, 9.2:1, and 9.6:1 comp). The high compression JDM and the B20Z definitely have a little better cams than the lower compression ones and the B18's, but I think that most of the rest of them are all about the same.
Here is a ton of useful info on the B20:

Are the B20 and B18b Heads the Same??
cardesignz

Except for the rare P8R head that came on some of the JDM B20B's, all of them have the P75 head which also came on the 96+ B18B.

To answer your question, my B20Z2 redlines @ about 6800.
Now to properly end any debate and confusion over the capabilty of the B20 vs. and LS, mine has 146whp/137tq with just i/h/e after a dyno tune at mainstream. I am pretty sure I had some bad gas in the tank and I know it had some cheap oil in it and only 80 miles on the swap, so it could definitly be putting out a little more at this point and 150+whp should be attainable with just bolting on a high flow cat (if it is not already putting that out). If you want cheap power without dealing with vtec, go to car-part.com and shop around the local salvage yards for a 1999-2001 Honda CR-V engine (this is the B20Z like I have and the B20 to get). I paid $850 for mine after tax, which is about what you would pay for a JDM B20B, which usually turn out to be the low compression engine that is basically only useful for a turbo in my opinion (they should technically feel about like a b18, just with a little more torque if that is all you are looking for).
stats from Honda in the CR-V:
1996-1998 USDM B20B/JDM B20B 126hp/133tq 8.8:1 CR
1999-2001 USDM B20Z/JDM B20B 146hp/133tq 9.6:1 CR
As can be seen from my results, when properly tuned, there is no debate. B20's rule.

what did you tune you car with. (uberdata,SFAC,ETC) just curious
cardesignz
09-20-2006, 10:46 PM
It was tuned with Chrome. Scotty at Mainstream chipped and socketed my stock OBD1 ECU and then he tuned it on the dyno. I forgot to mention I'm getting a consistant 32mpg with it in my 1992 Integra with my very agressive driving and it passed emissions after he re-enabled the O2 sensor LOL.

If you had read, you would have seen that mine is a B20Z, which only comes in the 1999-2001 USDM Honda CR-V, specifically, mine is a B20Z2 from a 2001. All USDM B20's come out of CR-V's. Yes, besides in the CR-V, they are also found in various Honda station wagons in Japan (orthia, stepwagon, etc) which get various hp/tq ratings from Honda due to various fuel maps, intakes, and exhaust manifolds. They are all also labeled as B20B, so if you are getting a JDM engine, you really have no idea what you are getting without some thorough research/documentation - most of the ones they are bringing over are the low compression ones. The only one of them that should differ from the the USDM B20B's and B20Z's specs is the JDM one that has the P8R head (larger vtec sized valves) instead of the P75. It also has an LS style intake manifold and has 9.2:1 CR due to a thinner head gasket (still has the low compression pistons and the same cams as a USDM B20B). This one came in the different wagons only in certain years. That's why I mentioned going to a local salvage yard and getting a 1999-2001 B20Z, so that you know that you are getting the good one. JDM engines are a complete gamble - the only way to identify the high compression one is by the knock sensor (all of the ones with the same specs as the b20z should have one - I am told that is is green on the JDM engines - my USDM engine had a brown one on the back of the block under the IM). So, which one do you have?

for daily driven torque and power get a higher compression b20z as will the add ons such as a header intake and so forth will help much more in tha long run. b20b for performance upgrades like turbos and chargers up to 8 psi only as far as everyday driver. mine was done by scotty at mainstream and is on 8psi but has a b20b bottom with gsr haed and cams and puts down 260whp and is 4 years old.
