Free Program for making GIF files?

Anyone know of a good one that I can DL somewhere? All I really want to do is take some clips from my AVI, MKV, and DIVX files to make some gifs. Please let me know. :)

I tried download.com but got a bunch of craptastic programs and others you had to buy. I'm poor.
