For my graduation present from my parents, they said they would buy me a digital slr. I was thinking on the lines of a D50 or a Rebel XT since I've heard mostly about these two camera. I wanted to know all of your pros and cons on these cameras and the differences too. If there are any other digital slrs you would recomend, tell me. thanks

Honestly, if your just beginning in digital slr photography, the camera's are pretty close. I myself am a Canon guy and I would recommend the Xt. I shoot with the 20d currently, and I really think that it is worth the few extra hundred bucks to get this one over the Xt, but that is a great camera. Its just small. Make sure you play around with it and like it before you get it. Also, the Canon over the Nikon will give you a little more range if you wanted to begin shooting more manual then just auto. Just my two cents

The XT is rather small in size compared to others and that is it's biggest complaint. I remedied that by adding the battery grip, which is also very useful since it gives you 2x's the battery power over stock. The XT is a full 8MP too. I do notice that Nikon seems to have a big variety of lenses on the shelves at the store compared to Canon's, although Canon has the ace in the hole in their "L" series lenses which are pro quality lenses.

I don't think you can go wrong with either to start with.

since your begginning i would also recommend getting an XT they are very good camera's and not so hard to learn how to use. functions are simple. it be the best choice in my opinion, and besides, the people that i sell those things to on a daily basis seem to love them when they come back to get things for it

I shoot with an XT as well but just be prepared to drop a lot of money on lenses. lol. Both are really good as there are several on here that shoot with the D50 so it depends on what you think you will like.

What do you plan on using it for?

D70 is not the same as a D50.

I also shoot with a Rebel XT. I feel the camera is more than enough to start with, it's got everything you need to start taking awesome pictures, but can be had for less than it's competition. I like the extra mega-pixles the XT provides as I do a lot my shooting to upload to a website that requires my pictures to be the largest resolution possible.

With a new lens and battery pack you'll have a damn good camera that can shoot with the best at 1/3rd the cost (depending on where you look).

The Rebel was recently replaced and as such prices have continued to get lower and lower.

thanks for all the info, i use a rebel in photography class the past couple years, and i am very pleased with it, i just don't have any experience with a d50 and heard they are kind of competeing with the rebel. o well i think about getting the rebel then, thanks again for all of the comments and info

The XT is rated at 50k actuations. It can be more or can be less just depends on the use. From what I understand the D50 is somewhere between 20k and 50k as there have been posts from D50 owners who were told by Nikon techs that the D50 was good for about 15k-20k and shooting continous will only shorten the life. Take it how you want it.

From what I have heard the shutter begins to lag causing you to miss the shot and eventually stop working. :dunno: that is what I have read.

No, none of the regular photogs are close to that. I may be ahead of most though cause I snap some pics when I got to an event. It is nothing for me to shoot 600+ in a couple of hours.

I just looked, I am just over 6k actuations.

How is your numbering set up on the XT? is it 100-xxxx or something else?

Yeah the 20D and 30D are both 100k's, which is why I want to upgrade.

I am at 45k *scared*. My friends 20d took a dump right around 55k.
I would recommend starting with a 10d if you go Canon. The operational change is a pain and the ease of use in the 10d is much greater. Plus, with a telephoto on a XT you can barely hold the camera.

ok, yesterday i went to local wolf camera and decided to go with the XT. I bought the Lexar 80x 1GB card and just stuck with the 18-55mm lens. I love this camera so far. It takes great looking pics! and one day upgrade my lens to a Canon EF 50mm to 200mm.

Depends on what you will be shooting mainly. The 28-75 Tamron F2.8 ($400~) is a great lens but it will not leave you much on the long end. You can pick up a canon 70-300 F3.5-5.6 (I think thats right) for around $200 to cover the long end. From there you start getting into min. $600 and up lenses.

Really depends, that kit lens is capable of taking some great photos but is limited in low light. To start out with and use it and learn it I would recommend it. I still have the kit lens in my bag.

Really up to you but the 350D falls right inbetween the D50 and the 20D. If you are saying that all you are going to do is car pictures then the D50 would work fine and the 350D would give you a lil more room to play with other styles. The 20D is way more than you would ever need.

Straight from Dpreview f00l!

Both the EOS-1Ds Mark II iand D2X represent the ultimate in current digital SLR technology. The EOS-1Ds Mark II's problem however is its big price tag. In our review of the Nikon D2X we clearly demonstrated that it is more than a match for the EOS-1Ds despite a deficit of 4.4 megapixels. So if you're building an entire new system the D2X will be an attractive proposition.

what is a good price on the D50, wolf camera is selling it for $549.99 with a not-so-great lense Quantaray 28-90mm F/3.3-5.6 Lens. Is that a good price? Also, Wolf usually sells D50 for the same price without the lense. So please shed some light.

Depends on where you buy it and how you buy it. With a kit lens runs between $750-$900 depending on where you look, the body runs between $625-$800 depending on where you look.

I'm still want to go with Nikon, maybe D50 with Quantaray 28-90mm F/3.3-5.6 Lens, bascially it's a new body with a so-so lense. Regular priced at $549.99, current sale is still $549.99 with lense and 50 dollar coupone for next purchase at WolfCamera. I think this is the best deal I've found for a new body. This is almost exactaly what i did. I got the same lense and only paid $50 more at wolf camera... I was warned about buying a "body only" camera becuase it's "illegal" to sell them without a lense and if you are doing that you most likely will not get your warenty... My total after lense, camera and two 512 memory cards ($100 total) was about $700.

I LOVE my D50! Theres so many things you can do with it, it's going to be a while until i can use it to it's full potential... Good luck with your decision!

Oh also, when i bought mine, I got a TON of free tickets for photography classes at wolf camera. I didn't even know i got the free classes until after I bought it and was about to leave!! What a great surprise!

This must be a Nikon thing cause Canon sells just the body. It makes no sense to "force" you to buy a body with a lense when you might already have several lenses.
