I need this information for a court date that is coming up April 12th. They are trying to prove that the speed-o on my car was wrong due to the size of the rims or whatever compared to stock size. I cant get the information due to not having the car in my posession... I cant have it calibrated. Thanks ahead of time.

With a known radius, what is the forumula to compute the circumfrence of a circle.

Known radius, 15" and 19"
7.5 and 9.5

3.14xRxR right??? or what?

He's right... d x pi = c.. but why do you have 2 different radius'?

To prove the diff. between the stock tires and the tires I had on there.

15" radius? 19 radiu? so a 30" wheel and a 38" wheel?

you want to go by size of your tire vs stock tire. you can have a 15" wheel with a 195/65R15 on it and have a 16" wheel with a 215/40R16 and they are .01 inches off depending on manufacturer. This is how it is with my stoc wheels vs new wheels.

You can also throw a 215/55R16 instead of the 215/40 and its going to give completely different numbers and a large difference in circumference.

just food for thought since your brining equations into it you might want to further think it, hate to see the court tell you your looking at the wrong aspect of it.

oh and i'd hate to be the bearer of bad news.... but the speedo is going to be less than acutal mileage if you have a larger wheel. tell me the mileage when you went from stock to the 19s and what the final mileage was and i can give you an estimate of how off they are.

your trying to prove that the OEm speedo is in sync with the circumference of your factory wheel, and in all reality you wanna go by the circumference of the tire, not the wheel. Technicly speaking if you put a taller tire on a car than whats originaly intended, your Speedo still reads 1 circumference=X amount.

When you have a larger tire on the same factory wheel it reads 1 cirumference=X, But the Cirumference is different, byut the car does not know to compensate, so whenever you chanjge from the orignal tire size in diameter your changing what your speedo reads, technicly speaking.

your not going to see a difference, your speedo will read what it thinks is 1 mile.

say this is your OEnm tire circumference drawn in a line

_______________________________________
and this is your new 22"s with tire

the car's Speedo reads by circumferences, which it reads as by how much the axle turns, 1 turn being X distance. So when yo change what the actual distance is, depending on how much the distance is changed, the speedo reads back differently.

hmm, will the people who bought the car help you out?

pay them like $50 to come for a day

but yea

2piR=cirdumference

and your speedo will be wrong, it measures angular velocity (w), not linear velocity (v)

so it has a set group of measurements to calculate the linear velocity using the angulare velocity and the radius

so say W=5 radians/second

and your old wheels and tires had a Radius of 15cm

then V=W x R

5 r/s x 15cm

75cm/s is how fast your going

and the new tires are 20cm in radius

so it would be 5 x 20 or 100cm/s, but the speedo would still show 75, becase it uses W going into a calculator of constants

Thanks to everyone for all of the real input...even to the thread jackers for bumpin it up. I sent everything in to the lawyer, says it will actually help. :goodjob: I gathered alot of info, and sent him what I thought was right... Even a little bit can make a difference. :)
