I choose the GTI as well. Although, the Mini Cooper S is an outstanding car for the streets. For a FWD car, it really handles well and surprised me with its capabilities.

^^^thanks for copying my avatar quote. I had to change it again.

I would drive a 75 gti with a cage and coilovers. They always busted my ass in autocross. Thats about it. maybe a g60 corrado. maybe.

Don't really like any of the choices though.

I dont know why, but I've loved the Mini's since they came out... The VW would be my 2nd choice.

Civic Si for Chassis, engine can be improved, most potential, i chose that.

But as my only car a 6spd GTi would be my pick.

Mini, I love them so much, but im a pretty big guy.

Both cars are barely quicker than the normally aspirated Civic Si (6.6 sec., 15.0 sec.)

Our navigation-equipped test car represents the screaming deal of the three, coming in at $22,490, thousands less than the more option-laden Volks-wagen and Mini.

In the company of the Mini and GTI, it's nearly as good just about everywhere, proving to be the most versatile handler of the test, but also the one hampered by its engine's narrow powerband. More torque might have put it over the top.

I would choose the civic. I can take the $8K price difference, and make it boosted like the other 2, and it would be faster. Then with the leftover cash I can pay for the first 5 yrs of gas.

I would so buy a mini, just so I could paint it clown colors and put a cool tooting horn on it.

i don't know which one they tested but i went to a dealer starting at 22k for the new gti w/ a 5spd... they had one fully loaded for 24k and it's already boosted

the fully loaded gti with everything possible from dealship, not counting roof racks or shit like that, is 26k. not bad for a 2.0l turbo 6 speed. it was one of the nicer cars ive driven. plu, u cant touch a reported 37 mpg highway for a turbo car.

i would pick the gti out of that group, who can beat a german turbo car !

I would like the GTI over the others right up to the point when i had/wanted to work on it, at which point, I would be switching over to the Honda cuz the last time i had to work on a German car, it sucked ass.

u cant touch a reported 37 mpg highway for a turbo car.

Its reported as 32 HWY, and with a 6 speed thats not that hard to achieve. 65 MPH probably will be around 1800 RPMs in 6th.

GTI w/o a moments thought. Its 200 hp, but a $599 chip makes it a monster that the new civic will never be able to tame.

2006 GTI 2.0T
91 octane 93 octane
246hp/282lb-ft 252hp/303lb-ftWhat kind of performance numbers does it do with the chip, i.e. 0-60 1/4 mile etc etc. While I was test driving one and the sales guy was talking about it, he mentioned it weighs about 3300lbs or so, and thats a porker for that size imo.

1/4 w/ a chipped 2.0t would put you low 13 or high 12 depending on driver.... all german cars are known for weight alot of sound deadoning, heavy carpets, etc... i know taking out my rear seats and spare saved me 200lbs :goodjob:

also on the GTI you can get automatic w/ paddle shifting :goodjob: (quicker than the manual)

If I got one, i'd like to keep my interior intact lolol. Might still look at one though if this is the case, does giac have a chip for the 2.0t?

yes sir and GIAC is always known for being stronger and more aggressive chip so i wouldn't be surprised to see over 300lbs easy :goodjob:

Let me know if you do i'll get you in touch w/ brian at EPG

 ...that is a bit over-optimistic..... 3 pedals is always faster than 2 in real life... and a chipped 2.0T will get you mid 14's unless you are talking bout gutting the whole car.

Definately GTI. I'm kinda biased though.

Kyle

In refrence to Boosteds60rs post the automatic is actually faster than the manual on the GTI. It has two clutches on the DSG transmission and shifts quicker. It really is quicker on GTI's.

I've test drove all these cars.. The GTI isn't that impressive, Its kinds sluggish and the handling is the best.. the mini S Is a pretty quick little car, and it handles like crazy, and the SI is powered by VTEC! it's quick, and it handles quite well.
the mini is too small for my tastes, the GTI has that dumb german feel to it, and the SI has the cozy homey feel to it. And its roomy as well. So i voted for the SI

umm if 250whp/300lbs can't get you in 13's you can't drive worth a shit :goodjob: or the car better weigh 5000lbs

I dont know about the mini but I know for a fact that all and I mean ALL VWs made after 1996 are fucking junk. They may be nice but the check engine light comes on every 5 miles. I choose Civic, even though its against every thing I believe in.

i would take the gti. i think the new si is ugly, should have been a hatch. and the mini is too small for me

I say GTi. I've driven the Si before and liked it, but the gti just had a different feel. I haven't driven a mini, so that could change my opinion.

Holy thread resurrection man!! WTF were you searching for bro? :D

Since you've brought it back from the dead, my vote goes for the MINI, especially in JCW form.. mmm... the Si and GTi are nice cars but don't really match up when the going gets twisty..

I drove all three of these the other day and I chose the GTI. The mini has entirely too much going on inside. What the hell is the car industry coming too when you have to pull the door handle twice everytime you want to get out of it. The honda IMO wasn't that spectacular after driving the other 2

The Mini is the better drivers platform, but the damn things are to high on the goofyness factor, slightly over priced and a little old when it comes to styling.

As a Vw and BMW owner, i'd go Gti (still the king of hatches), at a great price, Coop S, then Si.

They haven't changed much. Mini went from a supercharger to a turbo on the S model, and the GTI's interior and exterior got a facelift.

I had a friend who bought one of the new gti's...

...it overheated on the way home from the dealership, and that was the first of many issues he had with the car.

VW is shit. Honda ftw!
