Well i was accepted to Georgia State for the fall 2006 semester as a transfer student from Georgia Perimeter. I went to the campus today to check it out and left saying something along the lines of, "fuck that... there is no way i am bringing my car here, nevermind paying 4 dollars a day for parking."
I'm coming from the Lilburn/Stone mountain area, so I figured i'd check out the marta commute. The closest station to me is Indian Creek... So most likely I am going to do a park and ride type thing(on the train). Here are my questions:
Anyone have experience with commuting to GSU on the marta train system?
Anyone have experience commuting from indian creek in particular?
Is the Indian creek station in a decent area? My car(supra) is probably going to be there about 8 hours a day/night.
I noticed they have a deal where you can get unlimited access to marta for $26 a month as a student... I assume that includes bus AND train?
Is it a reliable source of transportation as far as timing goes? The marta website says a train arrives every 15 min and it takes about 20 min to get from my station to the "campus"... can i hold them to that?
Feel free to add any other commuting experience/advice you may have... I read the other posts on GSU issues, but I could care less about that crap... Keep on topic. ;)

^^by far .....the marta transport method is the best...i have ride it along with Ming...he is on here too....and its very good ....save u tons of gas...and ur car should be safe in the parking lot...buy the pass monthly...and btw...u can park in Turner Field for free

I don't really know the area... You'd have to take a bus from turner field right?
I'm not into putting the wear and tear(mileage) on my car either... so as long as marta is a good option that's probably what im going to do. It's like 25 miles each way from my house... 50miles a day not including work... f that. At least with marta station it's only like 13 each way and i wont have to worry about parking.(or gas as you said)
Thanks.

first off, i wouldnt leave anything at indian creek i would want to see again.
secondly, you want to get off at the gsu station.
thridly, parking at turner field was free but you need to give yourself 30min to get to class cause hell will freeze over before the turner field buses run on a schedual.
4th i hated riding marta. my ride was a bit further(i was coming from nrth springs station) and the train station dumped me right on to 400. i met this girl who lived right there at nrth springs so we would get stoned and then ride the train up to her place and do what stoned college kids do until the buzz wore off then id drive home. or the last semester there i would go to underground and have a few shots before getting on the train, makes the ride and the smell more bareable.
5th $26 for the train pass? its was $18 2 1/2 yrs ago, but tis still a pretty good deal.
heres the deal if you go to that school and you dont live in the dorms, live close to the campus, have an m deck pass, or have a really really good friend with any of the afore mentioned you are properly fucked. the problem is the school is trying to transition from a commuter school to a standard 4yr college (uga, ga tech, nrth ga, you get the idea). since they started that bullshit they stopped helping the commuters. good luck, but i would seriously consider going someplace else.

What makes you say that about indian creek? You have(or know someone who has) experience or is it just a shitty area?
I can't imagine that marta is any different than the lirr in new york. I didn't mind that too much. Although the whole fucking thing smells like used diapers.
Yeah, i was thinking about trying to find some local residence, but hope has been a bitch to get being an out of state student and I just dont have the money to go out on my own. Plus, I've already racked up the student loans and I don't know if I'm past mooching off my parents yet ha. Considering I'm paying every dime of my expenses, I might as well take advantage of the housing.
I'm really just trying to feel this whole thing out. Originally GSU was a backup plan while i applied to a few schools in New York. I got a rejection notice about a week ago from my top NY choice and dont want to be caught with my pants down. If i dont get accepted to queens college, GSU it is.
Thanks.
Chris
p.s. Keep em' coming.

Cramer, I'll teach you how to park on campus for free for $100. It'll work the entire time that you attend GaState. I'm currently a jr, and I've only paid a total of 20 dollars to park on campus. :) What can I say? I'm a genious.

a friend of mine used to ride in from indian creek, i think he lived near stone mountain, anyway his integra got stripped one day while he was at school. thank God they didnt steal the car, had a b18 conversion, but they took everything outta the inside. that being said, like 6months later the car got stripped again while sitting in m deck, so whatever.

I don't trust the indian creek marta station.. I was skeptical, me living on the southside.. I used to park at the Ft. Gillem exit.. I know your worried about miles and what not, so buy a beater and use it to commute.. once you start parking your car there, thieves may get a schedule of yours and find the perfect time to "heist" it.. marta is indeed smarta, but, depending on what station you park at, thats the problem.. I park at turner field for free and when the baseball season starts, I may have to pay once/twice a week to park, but I pay no more than $3 bucks a day.. there are plenty of places that charge less..

Ha i'll go down to the financial aid office tomorrow and see if my loans cover bribes.

Wonderful... So I'm damned if i do and damned if i dont. Although, it seems like the hondas are usually bigger targets for theft.

So what do you do for the marta fees? Do you do the unlimited pass or something? Also, doesnt turner get pretty crazy during baseball season as far as traffic?
I'm trying to keep this as inexpensive as possible so i dont have to take out an astronomical amount of student loans. A nice lady did me the favor of t-boning(wrecked) my commuter car a few months ago, so that's probably out of the question for now.
Sounds like I'm going to take my chances with marta unless i can grab a cheap residence closer to the school.

the marta fees are I believe for a monthly pass is $26 for a discounted monthly rate... you'll have to buy a card every month to ride the train/bus... Turner field used to be busy and parking used to be a BITCH.. but they opened up the whole parking lot for students recently and they re lined it to make like a 100 more spots or so, so parking is not a problem. During the baseball season, if you do, in fact park your car at turner field, the buses will post a sign how long your car can be there, like day games you have to leave around 3/4pm.. I believe.. and they'll tell you when you can't park there during the season..
a cheap residence like? you can always try METROPOINTE LOFTS.. there are alot of student housing/apartments in that area to look at... I still wish I lived in ATL, but I don't

dude, anyway you get to GSU is gonna suck. Driving sucks, and taking marta sucks. I took marta allllll last year and i got tired of it. I had to leave my house earlier than i did when i drove. Reliability of marta: it's USUALLY on time, sometimes its allllll fucked up. I just got tired of taking marta, and i started driving down there. Yes, driving sucks balls and puts a lot of miles on your car, but o well. I'm coming from the same area as you, Indian Trail to be exact. I park at turner field and before it got re-lined, if you would get there around 12, you were assed out b/c parking was gone. But it's not that bad. Yes, sometimes the buses do take forever to get there, and its only like 1 bus every 15 minutes. So either way you choose, your fucked :goodjob:

I've been taking marta to GSU for the past two years. I don't like it because I have to leave 1 hour before class, but I don't mind it since I save gas and leave my car at a place that's safe from dooring dings. I say give marta a try for a month, if you don't like it, drive to turner field.

ha thanks.
I assume you were coming out of the indian creek station? I live down more towards the lilburn area when it becomes killian hill. Like the below post said, I'll probably just try it out and see how bare-able the marta commute is.

Yeah my car is getting the shit kicked out of it over at gpc. It's like fighting an uphill battle trying to keep it clean while on college campuses. I figure maybe i can throw the car in an empty corner at the marta station and avoid any new additions to the ding and dent family. As well as avoid the mileage and the wear and tear of city driving.

as my experience with marta...it has been good...i use to drive a 350z and park it at the doraville station...i've never had any incident where my car was damaged of any sort...not sure about indian creek...but the commute from marta is pretty good...time wise...usually you will get to where u need to go about 5-8 min later then driving...but if ur tryin to drive in traffic...it will get you there a lot faster...
students get a discount on marta so it helps out a lot...rather then paying $1.75 each time u ride marta..

honestly, if you drive to GSU and park at turner field, you can park all the way to the RIGHT of the parking lot, no one parks out there and NO DOOR DINGS.. I park out there.. or when I'm there ass early I park right on the edge..
depending on time, what time your classes are and traffic that is ALSO another factor.. b/c marta would be the best bet in RUSH HOUR.. train wise, not bus.. and if your driving during off peak rush hour it'd be best to drive into school and "monitor" your car..
all in all, your shafted anyway you come to school and park. atleast you'll have some sort of peace that your car is going to be stolen/broken into.. b/c it'll happen in ATL as well as any other marta station

I usually drive from N. Druid Hills... The traffic is a bitch sometimes... I leave 45 mins early cause you never know what the traffic can be... cause atl drivers are pretty damn bad lol

Eh, I just park at N deck behind the rec center. I have a budget card so I put as much money as I want on it and a lot of times the scanner that deducts the money from the card is offline a lot anyways. Sure you pay a bit more, but imo it sure beats the hell out of riding marta.

Can we still park at turner field for free? And If so, how long does it either take to walk from turner field to say gcb/alc, or how long does the shuttle take?
ORGANIZATIONXIII
04-14-2006, 03:44 PM
we can still park at turner field for free.. but I'd check the auxillary services schedule on the shuttle or the memo thats on the bus.. tells you what days you can't park and what days you have to leave by 5pm.
walking from gcb to alc takes about 8 mins no more than 10.. I can usually get there in 4, but I walk EXTREMELY fast.. and the shuttle times vary depending on traffic like a 10-15 min in the morning.. but it averages a ride of like 10 mins though

a friend of mine...... his integra got stripped one day while he was at school. thank God they didnt steal the car, had a b18 conversion, but they took everything outta the inside. that being said, like 6months later the car got stripped again while sitting in m deck, so whatever.
what kind of motor did he have before he got the B18 in his integra??
