Its chambered. It builds up back pressure and makes the sub pound hard, if its made for the sub. They are worth it if you have a good sub and want very loud very deep bass. Same thing bose uses in principle.

its called a transmission line box..do a search for transmission line and you should find some sites w/ how to's. i remember sound sensations and the source would build them and sell them for like $150...i laughed at them when they offered on to me once and told them i would build it for $40 in MDF myself.

you sir are correct!!

if you want to have loud sound in a small space, then a trans. line box in perfect. or if realy into SPL

I remember when the snailshell was so popular. Until of course some very knowlegable people started posting how-to's on just about every forum. Its still very hard to design and build, but as was alsready posted. Why pay 300+ for a box when you can build it yourself for $40 in wood.

Transmission line boxes and small enclosure don't really go together. Their generally large but give the best mix of sound quality and spl. So their generally the size of a double sub box, but have equal to better output form only a single sub setup.

Im not too sure I would put the "typical" transmission line box and sound quality in the same sentance. Sound "good" or sound "decent" might fit, but probably not sound "quality". (Granted, my version of "quality" will differ from someone elses opionion)

I would also figure that a ported box will be approximately 40-60% larger than the necessary sealed box for the same woofer. Typially a much different sound from each box... Not saying 1 is "better" than the other. THAT depends on the application (person/vehicle/etc).

trans line boxes are huge.the "line" or flared "port" must be 1/4 wavelength at the tuning frequency(f3). ie. f3=40hz line=8ft.

a "wave" box is just a horn ported box. a horn resonates at all frequencys. a port only resonates at a set f3. a wave box basically uses the speaker for compression and the horn to make the sound.

TL is way less efficient than a 6th order bandpass or a regular ported box because of the bad port design. Find someone using a TL in spl competition setting records and I will give you a billion dollars unless they are in meca lol.

quarter wave theory is a theory and doesnt really work in even dedicated spl cars. To get loud people test and test.

A true "wave box" is like a Bose system. For an auto application the only real application would be a truck or a van. A real transmission line enlcosure is HUGE. AS far as I know I still hold the record for under 100 watts since 1999. 1 -12" Cerwin Vega Stroker 147.9 AudioControl meter in a 23^3 foot enclosure, res. freq. 66-67hz

Les thinks he came up with this "Wave-Box" program... it's been here longer than he's been alive...

Les had some ebay program that built transmission line boxes. I was good friends with his Buddy China that used to live with him and China told me one day about it. People figured it out and he moved far away and to another place he could scam.
