compression test....and does the car turn over or what, not starting could mean alot of things, my first guess is bad valve/seals, sounds like exhaust is seeping past them, and wheres it coming out of the intake, around the gasket, coming directly out of the TB?

do a compression test, if tools avalable leak down test is best. it will show where the gas escapes from.

It's a friend's gsr. He said it came out of the filter, which led me to believe that he had to broken a valve or cam lobe, or something that would be causing an exhaust valve to remain open and letting exhaust gasses into the intake track. And he said it wouldn't even try to fire, not even on three cylinders. I dont really know, it's at the shop now, just a curiousity question with hopes that someone else may have had a similar problem. He parked it at a gas station, went inside, came back out and tried cranking it, and smoke was the result.
