need some help

if i buy a motor from sum one. then how would if the moter is good or bad???? does lookin in the oil pan help? or is there anywhere else that i need to look at to see anything wrong with the engine before buying the engine

get a compression test done.....take the valve cover off and see if anything is out of order with the rest of the parts. thats about all i know. hopefully someone else will post more info. i need to know the same, but i've already bought the motor....so its just sitting until i find out the rest.
